But there's now talk they will launch a new investigation into the past investigation. This changes everything because the new arbiter is free to conclude that everything in the past was wrong and that all the crap they threw at Paine now is completely justified.

There was absolutely no need for Cricket Australia to do anything other than say, "he was cleared under our investigation at the time, however he has decided that given the revelations he can no longer continue as captain and we have accepted his resignation and thank him for his service." Instead they throw him and the previous management (ignoring that several members of the board are still there) under the bus to try and avoid a hint of controversy.
Clarke's comments criticising Paine for resigning and not saying to Cricket Australia they have to sack him are ludicrous. WTF? If Paine doesn't want to captain anymore under this cloud, why shouldn't he be free to resign? And if he stands up and says sack me, he'd still lose his job, but probably also kill any chance of playing in the Ashes AND make it into a much bigger story that will take longer to blow over.
