Kotoni Staggs and Corey Oates return for the Brisbane Broncos as they take on the Cronulla Sharks looking to put a dent in their finals hopes. Join The Roar for live scores from (AEST) as Sunday’s matches begin..
It’s a completely new-look Broncos outfit to the one that copped a 46-0 pounding at the hands of the Rabbitohs in Round 15. Out is Matt Lodge, who’s moved effective immediately to the Warriors; Tevita Pangai Jr through suspension and Xavier Coates, who won’t back up from Origin 2. Oates and Staggs back in the side, the latter for his first game of the season, does square the ledger: but it’s not too often you see a team make eight changes and come away victorious.
The Sharks are making a habit of thrilling finishes, having won three of their last four games by two points or less – including two thanks to last-gasp field goals. Those wins over the Dragons, Panthers and Cowboys has seen them climb into the eight, and with a chance to open a gap to the ninth-placed Knights with victory today.
Will Chambers misses, having returned to Melbourne to be with his wife for the birth of their first child. That has seen coach Josh Hannay shuffle the team around, with Connor Tracey moving into the centres and Sione Katoa coming off the bench to wing.
How the Suncorp Stadium crowd reacts to Ronaldo Mulitalo will be a fascinating subplot to this game. The Sharks winger was all set to make his Origin debut for Queensland, before being heartbreakingly ruled out due to eligibility concerns. Don’t be surprised to see him receive a rousing cheer from the fans at some point… though perhaps not if he scores a game-winning late try.

The Kayo (assuming fox) commentary team were so Broncos bias it wasn’t funny. Pls use a commentary team that can “play it straight down the line”.

I sincerely hope you are right. I have loved this game for 58 years yet watching these 60 to nil atrocities is bringing me to despair. We have always had superior teams that won many games by lets say 3 trys . Now a three try margin is a walloping but if you support the losing team you stay invested till the last few minutes. You always have the hope that the Gods will intervene and three quick trys will come your way. An 8 try shellacking has you changing channels.

This is the type of game I am banking us getting to when the clubs sort themselves out and relearn how to defend. We will get there

This is what Rugby League can be. The tension in that game was incredible. Two sides fairly evenly matched with both having a real crack. Pity this game is the exception rather than the rule.

Origin has put a spring back into Haas’ step… I think he’s remembered he’s a better player than a lot of his team mates …

Broncs actually turned up and put the effort in with our defence. Makes the wold of difference. You can't hide behind giving penalties away anymore. Great game and win. Now they need to do it again next week and keep working on better defence out wide.

Broncos were 5 metres off side on the last kick chase they pinned SJ for the drop out and last try. Mysterious how it wasn't called. The bunker must have dozed off for a moment.

Top game. When rugby league is played like that - very hard to beat. With a couple of strategic signing the Broncs should be OK next season.

Particularly as the incident was in the immediate set of six.. broncos get no benefit from a charge report and the Sharks get the ball back from a line drop out.
