The Canberra Raiders and Canterbury Bulldogs face off in a clash likely to keep one team’s season alive in 2022. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 6pm (AEST).

Ricky Stuart’s Raiders are in a world of pain; off the back of five straight losses and after another second half fade-out against the Warriors in Round 8, the Green Machine is looking awful in 14th place on the NRL ladder.

Today they face a club well versed in long periods of winless play, yet also a team that defied the odds and claimed a brilliant win against the Roosters last weekend at Accor Stadium. The Bulldogs held on by the skin of their teeth against the Chooks, after a mid-week rev up from the maestro Phil Gould and their season may yet have some life in it yet should they be able to claim the two points this evening.

Three wins in nine may not sound like anything to write home about, yet for the Dogs, it would be a clear step in the right direction after a recent past that has featured nothing but anguish for their fans.

The Raiders simply need some confidence and the return of inspirational captain Jason Croker may well provide it, although the absence of Jack Wighton and the necessity of playing Adam Elliott at hooker may well offset any benefit of having the champion centre returning to the starting 13.

The Bulldogs have troops back for this clash, with captain Josh Jackson and Brent Naden returning to a side that does finally appear to be finding some fluency and cohesion. A successful trip to the nation’s capital will have the blue and whites cock-a-hoop and feeling they have finally turned the corner.

A loss for the Raiders will apply even more heat to Stuart, potentially disinterest fans and condemn them to the reality that finals are out of the question in 2022.

Prediction

This could actually become something of an epic, with a tough forward battle likely and the team able to create the most opportunities in attack, despite both showing little for much of 2022, likely to claim the two points.

Something tells me that what we saw from the Dogs last weekend was real, progressive and sustainable and they may get the chocolates in Canberra by a single field goal late in the game.

After a quick chat with JMK last night, he assures me he is feeling very 'confident' about next season. The most vilified player at a struggling club. Clocking up great numbers and deserving of better treatment elsewhere. He ain't no Jason Hetherington or Ennis but the guy is one of the first 2 or 3 picked each week. Problems lie elsewhere. His left to right pass is imperfect yet many a great hooker had a dominant side. I'll keep cheering him on. Amazing he was kept out of the starting line up by Lichaa!

By my count JMK is fifth for hookers in the Dally M, 8th in SuperCoach and 9th in NRL Fantasy… so you’re up in our bet… :stoked:

JMK is a terrible 9. He made a good line break the other night, but his service is awful. Watch how often the first receiver has to turn and take the ball on their inside shoulder. He does nothing to engage defenders to take pressure off his runners I agree about Averillo. I think he’s talented, but I really think Barrett has stuffed him around playing him at 7 the last 18 months. He needs a spell in reggies to get some confidence back Naden is rubbish.

Another cool 53 points for JMK and he is wanted on the market! Can you explain to me how Averillo is playing first grade. I've never got it and am absolutely mystified as to what he offers a back line.

Dogs won three on the bounce that kept our faint chance alive… …and I still hate it. What does that tell you…?

Sometimes the lesser informed punters refer to the cardinal and myrtle as red and green. Since 1908... Q.E.D. Souths copyrighted it first. :silly:

Souths are myrtle, not even called green....green or lime green, just a colour called green

Well done Raiders… deserved winners So disappointed with the Bulldogs. First half was probably our worst of the year. Did well to keep the scoreboard respectable but that’s not good enough against team 14 Ball control has been one of our few strengths this year and it killed is on the first half We can’t play with Naden, Dufty and JAC as our back three. No carry there and we start sets too deep Burton was great tonight but his kick selection was a bit off. Those hanging kicks are effective right place, right time but sometimes you’re better kicking for the corners than landing one on the 30m line. Particularly when you’ve been in trouble Averillo isn’t offering much at the moment and Naden was horrendous

In Gus' defence, he has taken absolutely no credit. All the stories have been created by Buzz and his cronies.

Thanks for being on board for the game tonight and be sure to stick with the Roar for all the NRL and AFL action across the remainder of the evening. Tonight, the Raiders have ended their poor run of results and the Dogs will be lamenting errors and poor discipline for the umpteenth time. He had some really nice touches. Do the Raiders keep him and punt Schneider - maybe a tricker decision if Croker's badly hurt.

FULL-TIME Canberra has held on at home for a gritty win against the Dogs. It was nothing to write home about as a contest, yet the Raiders well a little too good for a clunky Bulldogs outfit tonight. Canberra Raiders............................14 Canterbury Bulldogs.......................4
