It’s all on the line for the Canberra Raiders as they take on the Sydney Roosters looking to keep their finals hopes alive. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary as Round 25 begins from 7:50pm (AEST).

There are a number of games this weekend which have no bearing on the finals. This is not one of them. For Canberra, a win gives them a very good chance of qualifying for the eight; a loss, and they are out. Meanwhile, the Roosters are still an outside chance of finishing in the top four, but will finish 6th with a loss.

After a number of mid-season setbacks, the Raiders have dug deep and won five of their last eight to get to the precipice of finals. They showed the same resilience last round against the Warriors, coming back from 16-0 down to win 28-16.

Jordan Rapana was massive for the Raiders in that game, with most of their attack starting from him. With Jack Wighton still not at his best, the pressure will be on Rapana to repeat the dose against the Roosters.

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad gets a start at fullback, with Rapana shifting to the wing to replace the injured Bailey Simonsson. Joseph Tapine has been named to play but must be in some doubt with his knee injury. Iosia Soliola has been named to start, with Ryan Sutton moving to the bench.

At 22-12 down to the Rabbitohs, the Roosters were firmly in the game with 30 minutes remaining last Friday night. It ended in a massacre, with the undermanned Tricolours failing to cope with the season-ending injury to Joey Manu, after he was clobbered by Latrell Mitchell.

James Tedesco is again key to the Roosters’ chances, and will be heavily involved in attack and defence. The Roosters’ pack was badly beaten last round but some reinforcements have arrived in time for the Raiders clash.

Angus Crichton makes his return from suspension, while Josh Morris, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Adam Keighran are all named to play. Lachlan Lam will start at five-eighth with Sam Walker on the bench. Siosiua Taukeiaho has avoided serious injury and will play.

Prediction

The Raiders have improved over the last couple of months, but apart from a win against an out-of-form Eels, they have struggled to beat teams higher than them on the ladder.

Whilst the loss of Joey Manu will be felt again, the Roosters pack has a much stronger look to it this week.

If they can get parity with the Raiders’ pack, the likes of Tedesco and Walker should create enough chances to win.

Don't think I'll be signing up as a member next year Tony. It just isn't worth it given COVID and the terrible scheduling of night games during Winter. They actually got the scheduling right a few years ago with a lot more afternoon games in Winter but that appears to have gone out the window. Think I might just stick with 4 or 5 home games when it looks like a decent contest scheduled at a reasonable time.

He’s a massive cog in the defensive line Joe. No coincidence that the Raiders looked much better in the previous two games against Manly and the Warriors due to CNK’s presence. But even he looked shattered in those final 10 minutes last night. There is only so much that blokes like CNK and Jordan Rapana can do. This journo has nailed the issues facing Ricky. https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nrl-premiership/teams/raiders/the-green-machine-was-flying-towards-a-title-now-its-broken-and-ricky-must-prove-he-can-fix-it/news-story/82e21972d962d88012333bd2a00b107a

There is some truth in that steve. The Raiders got lucky with Hodgson, Whitehead and Sutton. But Bateman and Williams showed some form for a year but couldn't handle the lifestyle in Canberra and wanted to pull the pin early. Not sure how you can predict that.

Hear and share your pain Taree. To be fair Ricky has taken the team to 3 preliminary finals and a Grand Final in his time with the club. So he must be able to coach. But why is there so much inconsistency from year to year? How can you go from such highs to such lows? How can what he brings work one year but not the next? I wish I knew. And I bet he does too. There were a litany of issues at the club that were poorly managed this season — the George Williams exit, Josh Hodgson giving up the captaincy, Croker being selected above the young backs Timoko and HSS and giving nothing, the non-selection of Papalii and Tapine for some games, the terrible choice of bench players and how they are used, numerous Curtis Scott incidents — the list is endless. They lost their mojo when George went home - recovered it briefly after they beat Parra - but fell in a huge heap last night. It was embarrassing to watch. Some of the blokes went missing e.g. Guler and Horsburgh who provided nothing. I felt sorry for Papalii, Tapine, Wighton, Rapana, Timoko and HSS who were all trying. And felt sorry for young Valemei who had about 6 errors but was trying as hard as he could - he missed a few tackles being one against two and had to make a decision to go for one of them, received a horrible pass from Young another time, was smashed from behind another time when he wasn't expecting it. He dropped a bomb but that was the only time he was truly at fault if I recall. Valemei summed up our night really. Maybe Ricky needs better support but he also needs to listen to people as he is stuck in the 2019 grindball mentality. The game has moved on and Ricky is left floundering in its wake. He just isn't attuned to the modern game. Because Ricky is a favourite son we are stuck with him. So we can only hope that he improves as a coach. I don't have much hope this will happen. Ricky hasn't recruited anyone from outside the club for 2022. He has extended some of the young backs which gives me some hope. But we are stuck with Croker for another three years, have extended Whitehead who is ageing, Hodgson can hardly run after 2 ACLs and if Sia is extended I'm going back to supporting the AFL. We badly need an organising half back but who would want to go to the Raiders after that performance last night?

Geoff a club is not only made up of the coach, the things that panned out with Bateman and Williams were huge setbacks for the Raiders, how would any side be if the same happened to them? Mate, don’t go blame Stickie only, its the whole admin at the Raiders that is at fault for not vetting players especially the two poms that let them down at the end.

did I see a goal awarded for the roosters last night on tv that missed and was awarded as I thought the commentators did as well in the first half?

Geoff, I have waited for 15 hours before I even looked at this blog. Last night was the first time that I have ever turned the T.V. off & not finished watching the Raiders play, ever. It was 13 minutes to go. As a fan who loves the game Rugby League (Raiders) all I expect from my team is that they go out every week & they give their guts, they try their best. That's it. Nothing more than giving it a red hot go. If we win that's fantastic, if we loose that's fair enough. However this year the Raiders as a team have been hopeless. It is disgrace that the best 30 man squad in the NRL has performed so badly. Coming into 2021 Rapana was back, CNK was amazing, Hodson, Starling, Wighton & Williams made a very good spine. Only one thing has let me down as a Raiders fan, it's not the fact that those 30 men can't play Rugby League. The problem is that after 8 years as the Coach, Ricky Stuart built this squad, it's his. But the only problem is that Ricky can't coach, mentor, develop & most importantly motivate his team. Last night proved all this. Why didn't they come out & tackle with intensity? After all there was something to play for wasn't there? Obviously the Coach wasn't who the players are playing for, why should me & the thousands of other loyal Raiders fans be punished indirectly by the players just because Ricky Stuart can't coach. Why did Ricky leave the Roosters, Cronulla, NSW S.O.O. the Kangeroos & Parramatta? Why, why, why? Because he is a pig headed, ignorant, self centred fool who can't be told. Past behaviour is a good indicator of future behaviour. Ricky won't leave so how about the Board & CEO conduct a review on their mate Ricky, look at the facts, don't make excuses. Sack Ricky & lets move on from this nightmare. Anyone would have to be better. 2022 couldn't get any worse, could it?

Sorry steve - Ricky has to take ownership for this - all the turmoil at the club this season should have been managed a lot better - he gets an F minus rating from me this season

Ahhhh, I am a misunderstood soul.. No H-8 here, just 'don't like a lot'.. Must say my output has been tempered by the quality of chook supporters I am encountering. Patiently putting up with my occasional vindictive and still communicating with quality and dignity. Blast you, uppercuts to the lot :boxing:

Ahhh.. I am a misunderstood soul. I actually have minimal ill feeling towards the chooks in general, Hate is way too strong  just dislike a lot. It will all come out soon, but a lot goes to my perception that they get too much their way and that it's not good for the game. Enough said. What has been a pleasant surprise the actual quality of people that many of the chook supporters are, putting up with my raves and apparent bias yet still communicating with dignity.

Funnily enough I wrote a comment on Reddit last night that said pretty much exactly that, one of the lines was: ‘ Multiple players stood up this year (Manu, Tupouniua, JWH and Crichton all come to mind) but the only person who genuinely held the team together was Teddy. He took on a play making, try scoring, hard-yards from our own line and general leadership role and I honestly don’t know who else in the competition could have done the same thing.’ And always appreciated that you can hate the Roosters with a passion and still provide reasonable commentary around them, good man.

Look to be honest I haven't - but I will cheer the Eels on if they are up against one of the heavy weights - I guess I feel the Panthers deserve to win a flag given how well they have played in the past two seasons - not that the Storm don't deserve to win either - I'm the classic go for the underdog supporter if my team isn't playing

I'm a massive fan of Tedesco - agree with all you've said about him - he just gets involved all the time - always sniffing around for an opportunity and an off load - you could just see him looming up and threatening to make a break last night - the perfect full back for mine - we are blessed to be able to watch Turbo and Teddy going around

You obviously missed my rant the other day. If you see it, note it’s meshed with a bunker and NRL whimps rant, not entirely a chook spray. Teddy hasn’t just stepped up as fullback, he’s covered the halves – creating plays, taken the hard hits with the forwards, been everywhere and organised defence. He’s doing Cordner’s job in leadership, Keary’s job in creating and often Friend’s role in getting things started. There are few words. And no worries mate, I’m still armed and ready for when the sombrero comments arise.
