Match preview

The North Queensland Cowboys are all but out of the NRL finals race, but will still look to get themselves up for the Queensland derby as they host a desperate Brisbane Broncos. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:50pm (AEST).

While the points cut off for the 2019 finals is likely to be lower than previous seasons, the Cowboys would still probably need to win all of their last five and even then have other results go their way if they are to sneak into the eight.

However, their form suggests they just aren’t capable of that, with an insipid display against the Tigers last week resulting in a 28-4 belting and Leichhardt.

And while the Cowboys form has been somewhat horrendous, they would love nothing more than to stand up and belt big brother Brisbane, which would put a major dent in their finals aspirations.

The Broncos were their own worst enemy last weekend as they had a strong run of wins over lower sides ended at the hand of Melbourne, with the likely minor premiers running up 40 points.

Given the form of the two Queensland sides, this is hardly likely to be a memorable match, but it will be a desperate one, because while the Cowboys situation is bad, the Broncos are also going to need three, and maybe four wins from their last five matches to play finals footy.

For the Broncos, it all comes down to the performance of their forwards. They are bolstered by the return of Alex Glenn, but still play without Matt Gillett, and if their young guns up the middle can’t slow down Jason Taumalolo and Jordan McLean, then this game could vanish before the visitors know what hit them.

But even then, the Cowboys attack has been a major problem this year, so they need to dominate and hope to score plenty of points up the middle.

Brisbane’s major problem outside of the halves is being consistent in holding onto the ball, and getting a working kicking game. With that operating and a weak back three of the Cowboys, they could flip the contest in their direction.

In saying that, Townsville hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for Brisbane over the years, with the NRL’s juggernaut losing six of their last seven there.

Prediction
A hard game to tip this. Neither team have been setting the world on fire, but this is a derby, and in Townsville, North Queensland should bounce back in an ugly affair.

Cowboys by 6.

The Broncos are sacrificing the entire functioning of the team just so they don't need to drop Darius Boyd. The coach is a clown. They've been going steadily backwards since 2015. It's time for Paul White and the Board to resign.

Ah, honestly, I haven't thrown my tips in there for some weeks. Just keep forgetting. No stress, my scores are tracked on site in the tipping article each week anyway.

Ah - that'd be because I didn't actually put tips in there and it's just given me the away team.

Yeah but now Milford’s moved to fullback so it fixed everything. (◔_◔)

In the tipping scorecard they've given you 1 but you tipped the cows.

Wouldn't you say that was the best of it? They are just raw talent, imagine what they would be like when their backs look like they haven't all just met each other... Everyone was whinging about the Bronco's halves before, now they have a hooker and and a fullback who have never played together in the halves and you wonder why the backline looks broken....

No. They lost because they didn't do it one last time. One more and the game was over...

The worst of all is when you consider that the Broncos have now moved into the eight. Its coming to something when a team putting in such an awful performance might end up playing finals footy.

Cows fans better hope Val Holmes doesn’t watch a replay of this game ...they aren’t taking it serious..Morgan kicking on the first tackle...big McLean on the sideline munching a strawberry snow cone...GGM makes SKD look unshakeable...real coach like Belly would love that..

I reckon the grounds man might have put to much water on the wicket. It looked like the ball was a bar of soap. GGM dropped 2 he shouldn’t have but he put a great chase on to get Milford caught down in a corner. The resulting play the ball was an error which lead to a Cowboys try. He mowed down a certain try from his wing. He probably has played 6 night games in his life. I’d back GGM to be worth sticking with. Drinkwater seems to be willing in attack but a little reluctant to step up in defence. To many balls he allowed bounce and his defence is really soft. Lot of his game needs work. The officials are diabolical and they seriously need to get one bloke running the show. They let so much go or they just don’t know the rules.

Another classic encounter - not - two very ordinary bumbling teams who were falling over themselves to lose - rugby league was the loser after that game -but nice try talking it up

Would the Broncos be playing any worse if they didn't have a coach at all? As long as they had trainers and managers I suspect they may even play a bit better.
