In what could prove to be the game of the round, the surprisingly strong Parramatta Eels take on the Cronulla Sharks at Homebush. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:35pm (AEDT).

The Eels have been one of the surprise packets so far this year.

After taking out the wooden spoon in 2018 and being tipped by a wide majority to do something pretty similar this year, they have picked up some surprising wins are were very strong in a loss against the Sydney Roosters last weekend.

It’s been a complete shift of attitude and culture at the club, with their new recruits leading the way as they attempt to build a defensive brick wall and build off the back of that.

Of course, the Roosters were objectively their first real challenge of the year, but with an improved defence, Mitchell Moses and Clint Gutherson playing well, and a better attack, they made the defending premiers nervous.

Their wins came over the Penrith Panthers and Canterbury Bulldogs, but they will have to front up to play the Sharks without Dylan Brown, who has been outstanding to start his career in the halves over the last couple of weeks.

On the other side, the Sharks have been doing what they do best, grinding teams out of games and trying to win by having the better forward pack.

They haven’t been absolutely perfect, but recovering from the loss of Valentine Holmes, they haven’t been far away. Shaun Johnson playing off a consistently strong forwards pack has been a joy to watch, while Chad Townsend’s kicking game has also been rock solid.

This match is going to be won in the forwards though, so the Sharks will need to continue playing at the level they have set so far this year over the Titans and Cowboys in the last two weeks.

They will be, however, without Matt Moylan this week, as Bronson Xerri makes his debut in the centres and Josh Dugan shifts to the back.

Prediction
Tipping this match is splitting hairs. It’s near-on impossible to know which way it’s going to go, given how impressive the Eels have been this year, but I’ll stick with the Sharks and their pack to roll over the finish line.

Sharks by 2.

There was constant reference by Fox about who was out for the Sharks but not once did they mention the Eels missing first choice players - Nathan Brown, Dylan Brown, Manu Mau, Will Smith and a couple other fringe players. Impressive all be it surprising performance from Parra. Moses looks more mature, Gutherson is back and Paulo looks like a man on a mission.

Tough night for the Sharks with a few big outs but you can't take anything away from Parra on that performance. They are certainly playing a million times better than last season.

The Rookie Kyle Flanagan taught the veteran Adam Reynolds a lesson in kicking goals from the sideline. If just ONE of those 3 misses went over... would'a, should'a, could'a. Oh well. :-(

FULLTIME The Parramatta Eels have won their final home game at ANZ Stadium before returning to the new stadium at their spiritual home, beating the Cronulla Sharks by 12 points in what was a dominant performance. While it wasn't quite wire to wire one way traffic, the Eels won all the key moments, defended strongly and by the time it was all said and done, thoroughly deserved their victory as they kicked away with a Michael Jennings double in the second half. Eels 24 Sharks 12

Maybe the travel and conditions in NQ drained the Sharks?

Tipping underdogs has been paying off the last couple weeks. Just not the Titans, stay well away from them...

79' - Mahoney not going to take any chances here. He rolls the grubber over the sideline, out in the corner with just over 90 seconds left. Eels 24 Sharks 12

78' - Not much drama left in this one. Parramatta in control, and with just two minutes to go, a 12-point lead isn't going to be tracked down by a tired Sharks side. Eels 24 Sharks 12

So far only the Rabbitohs and the Tigers have let me down and both of those only went down by 1 point in golden point extra time! So close but no cigar.

76' - The Sharks strongly back over halfway here, then Townsend bombs to the corner, with Ferguson doing a superb job in the air there. Eels 24 Sharks 12
