Round 24 of the NRL premiership continues this evening when the Sydney Roosters take on the Dolphins at Allianz Stadium in Sydney. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:35pm (AEST).

There is good news and bad news for the Roosters. The good news is that they are only one win outside the 8. The bad news is that they are currently in 12th place and their for and against is, frankly, woeful.

The upshot then is that they simply need to bank the 2 points tonight. If they play like last week, they should be able to do it. The 26-16 victory against the Sea Eagles was arguably the Roosters best showing of the season.

The Roosters dominated an undermanned Manly pack and then started punching holes in their defensive line. Luke Keary and James Tedesco both had big games and will be keen to repeat the dose against the Dolphins

In a rare appearance in first grade, Dylan Napa comes in for the suspended Nathan Brown. Otherwise, Trent Robinson has named an unchanged squad.

The Dolphins lost to the Knights 30-28 in Perth last Saturday afternoon, after leading 22-12 with 30 minutes to go. The loss effectively ended the Dolphins season, and Wayne Bennett wasn’t in the mood for a post game press conference.

Despite this, the reality is that the Dolphins have exceeded their pre season expectations. An experienced pack, young halves and star power in the backs has given Dolphins fans their share of highlights in their inaugural season.

Ray Stone makes his return this week on the bench, pushing Herman Ese’ese to 18th man. Kodi Nikorima is named at fullback and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow in the centres, but that may change close to game time.

Prediction

There’s no question that the Dolphins will turn up to play. I don’t think the Roosters will get the same ruck dominance that they did against Manly.

However, they will be desperate to remain in finals contention and should win. Roosters by 10

Compared to 1st half, roosters played better. Still a long, long way from where they should be. Probably still won't make finals but need to build toward a better 2024. They won't challenge for the premiership next year but hopefully better than the wreck this year

Thanks, David. Well done to the Roosters, they were desperate for that win. Dolphins did well in the first half, but had a poor second half - at least they got a second half try to make the score look less of a blowout.

The Roosters are only 1 win out of the 8 but the difficulty for them is that their for and against is terrible, so it is effectively a 2 game difference. Winning all 3 may not be enough but they can dream for now

I have no doubt you are correct, but it's rarely the way the Refs rule.

The Dolphins look a bit busted but they will be looking to bounce back against the Tigers next weekend

Things would need to go their way, but the Roosters still have a chance of semi final football. They play the Eels next Friday night in a blockbuster with the loser gone for 2023.

The Roosters won it, well, but the Dolphins never gave up. Beaten as much by HIAs & a binning than by the Roosters, they couldn't overcome everything. Thankyou, David. A great call as it always is.

If the tackle is completed and you pass the ball off the ground it’s a penalty however if the tackle is completed and you pass the ball whilst standing up you retain possession and get to play the ball. Strange rule

He’s not worth 750k a year. No winger is! Happy to see him leave at the end of this season
