Paul Gallen furious over the timing of Bronson Xerri's drug test results

By The Roar / Editor

Former Cronulla captain Paul Gallen has lashed out at ASADA over the timing of the release of the positive drug test results of teenager Bronson Xerri.

Gallen questioned whether there was a conspiracy with how the results were released just days out from the start of the NRL season when the tests were done back in November.

Speaking on Wide World of Sports radio Gallen believes the Sharks have every right to be upset considering they’d released another star player to stay within the salary cap.

“They released Josh Morris to go to the Roosters,” Gallen said.

“Had this been dealt with in November which it probably should have been, there’s no salary cap issues and they’ve still got a really good centre there in Josh Morris.”

Just reading an article and ASADA are a government based authority and they don't answer to any sporting body and take as long as they like to conduct testing.

Well it's a fair assessment that players pick up bad habits from those around them. Barba and Segeyaro have no history with drugs before playing with the Sharks from memory?

Considering they took blood and urine to sample...sounds like he is in for a long ban

Ummmm wasn't Segeyaro at the Broncos when he was tested for doping. Are you drawing the very long bow that just because he played at the Sharks he must have picked it up there??

No denying mate. I was with Gal on this, not about the timing itself but about the time. However, as with many things, I didn't realise how long these things take. It seems that 6 months is pretty reasonable. Either way Xerri needs to be fully investigated and was correctly stood down until he is either cleared or found guilty. It's terrible timing for us but that can't be helped.

Thats not how it works.....They take 2 samples at the same time. Store the B sample and test the A sample......If A sample comes back clear they move on...If A sample comes back positive to something they then test the stored B sample to ensure it wasnt a poluted test of the A sample

There was also a criminal investigation ongoing - so if ASADA need to hold on to the result while they pursue avenues that might lead to the dealers being caught and who else they might be dealing to - then so be it.

Wouldn’t expect much else from Gal. Easiest route out is to always blame someone else. I read an article interviewing Gus with him wanting the answers to some BIG questions around this new saga, He is such a stalwart of the NRL, someone who deserves to get the top job. Gus is loved by all fan’s and is very well respected.

Yeah Gallen, Im with you. How dare ASADA release the positive drug test results when they like! Should've called you first, checked a convenient time/date etc for this to be made public. Poor Bronson probs took the drugs by mistake anyway! Dont they know the world revolves around you guys? Sheesh!

Have you considered that they have given him time to clean himself up before a b sample to save a young man's career.....

Yep, there is none else to blame but himself.

Sorry Gallen, ASADA can and should do this whenever it is best from their side, not the player or club. And claiming player welfare, give me a break.

Seems a reasonable question to ask, why did it take so long. Possibly Jason Clare could hold a press conference to explain

There has to be some serious investigation around the Sharks club culture regarding illegal drugs. The NRL gave the Sharks and in particular Flanagan and Gallen the leaders of the club any significant punishment over peptides. Now Flanagan is in a senior coaching role after basically treating the administration with contempt. Gallen continued as a leader and captain of NSW. Segeyaro and Ben Barba all being done for drugs? The games media promotes Johns and Gallen as ornaments to the game. Latrell is a lose cannon but the one they use to promote the game?

I would imagine there would also need to be the re-testing of his former A samples to determine whether the figures are an anomaly, or a trend etc.

Gallen getting angry with the wrong people here. It’s like getting wound up at the police when one of your mates gets caught committing a crime. The “why did it take them so long to announce the test result” is specious.. I think questioning the motives for the time frame is paranoid rubbish. The guy appears to have broken the rules and should be sanctioned.. simple as that.

A former ASADA investigator called into the radio yesterday and said it can take up to a year between testing and releasing the results on the A sample to the public.
