The Queensland Reds are hunting their second win of the Trans-Tasman campaign against the ladder-leading Blues. Keep up to speed with this blockbuster on The Roar with live scores from 7:45pm (AEST).

The Reds did what many rugby fans had resigned themselves to believing was impossible last weekend – beating a New Zealand side. They had to hold on for dear life in the second half, but the drought-breaking win over the Chiefs has instilled a new sense of belief in the reigning Super Rugby AU champions.

They’ll have to step it up against the ruthless Blues, however. The Aucklanders have been keen to atone for a disappointing Aotearoa campaign and have taken it out on hapless Aussie opposition with three consecutive bonus point wins. However, a loss tonight would really shake up the final race – so they’ll need to be on their guard.

JD I can very clearly see the improvements in the Aus teams in just 4 weeks of playing the NZ teams. You cant?

Ok. I meant both too. Dunes and esp hills are great if done with good form. Short, medium and long hills. And the Jamaicans have 3 words with speed development. Sleds, sleds, sleds.

Angus Blyth was good off the bench, as long as you wanted power with minimal speed.

Yeah the increased crowds and TV audiences have been a massive fail... If all the Aussie teams had the potential of the Reds it would be different, but the old SR suffered greatly on both sides of the ditch from mismatched TT competition. Why repeat the mistakes of the past? Certainly there needs to be some contact at Super level, but it needs to be short enough not to bore or depress everyone and lose the spectator gains of the past two years.

I agree. Give rich benefactors the freedom to go over the cap, but only to bring back foreign based or league players and certainly not to poach from other Super Rugby teams like the CUBs are doing.

I'm sure a Ref has asked those questions, but probably more so of the AR than the TMO. And the ref is probably in the best position to judge a maul. You do see judgement come into it though. There was a game the other week where a defender was YC'ed because the ref said he brought it done, but Nick Bishop highlighted it was likely a few backs running in and providing a surge of momentum which tripped it up. It can be subjective. Its the constant contest that makes it more enjoyable than AFL or League for me, so yea, it does make it satisfying for this spectator. But understand its not everyone's cup of tea.

One does wonder. I mean, none of this is new. Kiwis spank you in rugby and feel like we matter. Aussies itch and moan about how its all unfair but you don't really care anyway.

one wonders why you dont take advantage of all the kiwi players, coaches and rugby intell to actually improve and stop whineing. maybe its bred into modern aussies to whine or blame the ref. old time aussies had much more pride and grit.

Apparently the defender has to bust through the middle of the opposition's mall and hug the ball carrier gently to stop him falling on the ground in case the ref thinks the defender tackled him. It must be very if it difficult to work out who is at fault if the ball carrier falls down. I have never seen a referee ask a TMO if a player made his way through the middle of a maul legally or if a try was scored as a result of obstruction when players break off a maul. It's one of the reasons rugby is somewhat unsatisfactory for spectators watching on TV.

The only thing that is dead is your way of thinking. Of course the Kiwis are ahead of us, but there is only one way of bridging the gap and that is regular play against them. Enough of these 'fair weather friends!'

Shhh, you only get to complain about the ref when it goes AGAINST an Aussie team. Apparently it never happens in favour of an Aussie one.

As long as you don’t crack the hits when we don’t invite you. Or only invite the top three teams. See, that’s what happened, and y’all were like ‘nah, we’re good enough, let us all play’. Clearly, you are not.

The HS bashing is ridiculous. We scored 24 points against the Blues. Could easily have had at least one more try. JOC hasn’t been playing the dominant 10 role in the way Quade does: he underplays his hand and sets up those around him. I don’t think there as much lost at all with Stewart there. Need to get the bench selections right next week (Mafi, Uru and McReight all need to be there). Was surprised Jock Campbell didn’t get a run last night but Grealy had a faultless debut, was very solid and in the mould of the Springbok’s light wingers. Saw very big potential there. I think they are a real chance in Wellington next week and it would be good to break that duck and move on so they don’t have to think about it next year

Hamish Stewart should be in the conversation for Wallabies bench role. Can play 10-12-15 and is a very solid defender. The length on his kicks last night was upstanding and I don’t feel that we missed a beat having him there instead of JOC. The only difference was that we missed JOC for the shot at goal at half time which was, in fairness, a kick which should have been made and a fairly costly one. With no notice that he was going to play 10 he did a very good job. Should be groomed as the Reds’ long term 10 after JOC and should get some more game time there against weaker teams.

So it was only a highly controversial yellow card that separated the two teams. Why no warning given?

Yep, that's what made him such a great battering ram as a player. All brawn
