The Waratahs host the Jaguares Saturday night at Bankwest Stadium, Parramatta. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 7:45pm AEST.

Despite the bookies’ odds favouring the Waratahs, this is not a cakewalk.

The Jaguares are in good form, poised on top of the South African conference. They have won four of the last six matches, two of which were away games.

Apart from the Crusaders, the Jaguares have the best tries “for vs against” statistic (+9) this year, tied with the Hurricanes.

The Waratahs were mauled by the ‘Jags’ twice out of their two previous clashes. They lost by 10 points last year in Argentina in the early rounds. This was preceded by a 13-point late-round loss the previous year at home.

But those were different times, with a different type of Waratah. 2017 was “annus horribilis” for Daryl Gibsons and his New South Welshmen, having a suffered/earnt a string of losses in later rounds.

This includes a 16-point loss to the Hurricanes, 15-point loss to the Chiefs and a 29-point drubbing by the Force. In the early stages of 2018, the “Tahs” were still growing out of their 2017 form.

While Gibson took over a season to get his team into form, the 39-capped ex-test flyhalf Gonzalo Quesada took the Jaguares into conference leading form from the start of his inaugural year.

He has built one of the best “back fives” on the planet, complemented by backs that can score from anywhere.

Moreover, they have one of the best defensive teams in Super Rugby, third behind the Crusaders and the Sharks.

Prediction
I am unsure about this match. Although the Jaguares have lost their last two games, they should bounce back. They will be desperate to maintain pole position above the Bulls, the Lions and the Sharks who are less than four points behind.

Equally desperate are the Waratahs who are two points behind the Rebels and two points ahead of the Reds.

In the end, I think the Waratahs at home, are more desperate and should finally win their first one against the Argentinians.

It's also interesting that this little controversy starts just when Jaguares are winning... Didn't hear any complaint when their play was inconsistent, where the 60' team, loosing almost all of their games in the last 20 minutes. Indeed the whole idea was to potentiate the Pumas giving their players year round, top level, competition. To your point about the lack of interest from Saanzar provincial teams on Argentinean players, I believe there's no one to blame. The 3 other nations have excess of players, specially Nz/Au with the Islanders. Many Argentinean players are a hot ticket in Europe right now, the ones that are already there, the ones migrating after the RWC and the ones that prioritize staying local and playing for the Jaguares after being tempted. It is what it is. I tend to agree with you final paragraph. Good teams make competition tougher and that makes super rugby more interesting.

On this nonsense of Jaguars=Pumas It is reverse causality guys. Only players from Super Rugby could be selected for the Pumas (now slightly changed with the inclusion of 4 Europe-based players). This was implicitly asked by Sanzar, as Argentina had to guarantee a quality side for Super Rugby inclusion. So, after 3 years, it is quite obvious that there would be so many cap players in Jaguares. With the exception of Cubelli & Brumbies, no super ruby team seems to be interested in argentines. I believe stronger competition should be beneficial for everybody, and I’m wondering if the good form of the SA conference has something to do with the inclusion of Jags.

Good perspective. It is good to see a strong jags team and hopefully a strong arg for the rwc. Anything to support sh vs nh at rwc time!

Fionn I agree with you but I also remember you pushing for him at ten last year to replace Foley. There was groundswell on the roar at the time... End if the day tho, his defense is unacceptable

I agree nobes, the tahs are weak. They're weak up front, in the set piece and especially in defense. I'm sick of being frustrated by them They don't have finishers but they don't have starters either We should expect better for that many wallaby caps but some of those caps may have been given out haphazardly and other players are past their prime. Either way, Gibson has not built the pack. Maybe you could say he doesn't have the cattle but they're trying to run before you can walk. Get back to basics and get back to a forward pack who can win the advantage line and maintain possession. I'd rather watch the brumbies succeed at hard rugby than the tahs fail at fancy plays

All good Thugby, but there is more to the Brumbies than McKellar. There is also Fisher, and it’s the Brumbies forwards that make all the rest so secure. I am not disappointed by Wessels yet. His pack were monstrous yesterday. Admittedly it was the Sundogs but there is a few more games to run and tough ones too. If the Rebels surprise the tough teams to come we will have another conversation. But of course as I said yesterday the Brums are the most trustworthy team in Oz atm.

Yes, that's well understood Ralph, and exactly what other teams need to do - lift their game by looking at themselves fair and square in the mirror in order to keep improving, rather than do a Phil Kearns and cry about it and knock other teams.

Can I just point out, with regards to the Crusaders being packed with AB’s, that these guy are Crusaders first and then AB’s. We don’t create a great team up hunting down AB’s and getting them into the Crusaders, rather we grow talent through the Crusaders and because they turn out great- then they become AB’s.

I think you said it best in another comment, Fionn, Not only did Beale miss the tackle on Moyano, he came in so high so if he had made it he would have been binned and a penalty try for the Jags.

He has got to be the most overrated player. In terms of performing at international level he had a great 2010, pretty good 2011, good 2015 world cup off the bench and a good 2017 in attack (but awful in defence) until he was horrific on the spring tour at fullback. Compare that to very poor 2012, abysmal 2013 and 2014, horrendous 2018. That means in 8 seasons since 2010 (missed 2016 with injury) he has had only had one really good season. There are at least 5 players I would have before him at 12 (Kerevi, Toomua, Meakes, Hodge, Hunt and maybe even Simone) and at least as many fullbacks ahead of him (DHP, Banks, Hodge, even Maddocks).

He has played pretty poorly in any type of jersey for some time.

That attempted tackle for that try was an absolute joke. I re watched a couple of times to see if he was going for the ball. His arms rise up to the head of Montano. If it wasn't a try it could have been a penalty try and a yellow. Is it that hard to go for the legs? Quade does the same

I thought the ref was great and communicated very well with the players. No excuses for this game, the jags were just too good. I would have liked the tahs to win but an exciting game nonetheless

I think Fionn and I made this point last night. My question for those with a coaching background - is it possible for Beale to learn how to tackle at his age? I guess when he was the schoolboy prodigy he felt tackling was beneath him as a 10, and so began his defensive deficiency. Can this be addressed so late in his career especially as he seems destined to have a role in the RWC.

lucky he is playing in SH that kind of attempt is a yellow in Europe - - if he connected a straight red. NH has been very serios in implementing the head high tackle rules / guidelines as laid down by WR. whereas in SH the refs seem to be redefining the definition. for eg in the Crusaders match the ref and TMO did exactly that when Mounga was hit on the head. am sure the WR directive on head contact says tackle around head is an offense , irrespective of where the tackle started. so saying the arm slipped up after hitting the shoulder is no excuse - but then that is how SH refs redefine the directives laws etc.
