Israel Folau overcome during emotional sermon

By The Roar / Editor

An emotional Israel Folau delivered a sermon to his church on Easter Sunday, almost breaking down.

The footage was live-streamed to ‘The Truth of Jesus Christ Church Sydney’ Facebook page.

Folau will soon participate in a code of conduct hearing as he hopes to hold onto his Rugby Australia contract.

The fullback was thought by the RA’s integrity unit to have committed a ‘high level’ breach of the code over homophobic social media posts, which he had previously been warned about prior to re-signing.

PLUS he’s a straight up hypocrite or liar. He said publicly that he would walk away if there was a conflict between his belief in gob and his footy. He should have walked and saved face, instead he is battling purely for $. He will genuinely be no loss to the game.

As long as high paid employees want guarantees on their income I am. We aren’t talking about the minimum wage masses here. We are talking about the 1%.

TMan let’s not forget those people in the Pacific Island Community struggling with their sexuality have been dealt a blow by IF and repercussions in this group include unacceptable suicide rates.

Did you seriously talk about putting red herrings to bed, then write that second paragraph?

It's important to put several red herrings in the false fact check bin. Folau's posts were not targeted at homosexuals- he targeted society in general to which homosexuals belong. His post would ironically have been more discriminatory if he left them out. Secondly young people struggling with their sexuality will not be committing suicide. I know as I was one of them. As a 14 year old and avid bible reader I discovered that my favourite pastime- adultery - was a sin. Adultery is defined as imaging having intimate relations with a woman you are not married to. I quietly put the good book down realising it was not for me. No harm done. Folau' s post was not hateful although several media mis reports have been. This really is a social media beat up.

As I understood from a cursory glance at the top of the page “The footage was live-streamed to ‘The Truth of Jesus Christ Church Sydney’ Facebook page.” Are you saying that page was private? Or could this be a case of “ready fire aim”?

I may believe that, probably even feel sorry for him, if he was a young guy coming to terms with the responsibilities of suddenly having fame and fortune. However, he's a 30 year old man who has made millions being in the public eye for over a decade. He's played at elite level across 3 codes, has a wife who is also a public figure, and would be surrounded by a team of professionals to guide him through the PR requirements of his paycheck and contractual obligations. The cherry on the top is he was hauled before his boss and given verbal and written warnings about this exact behaviour. If he can't deal with the repercussions of his fame and fortune, and that includes peer pressure, maybe he owes it to himself to step down regardless before he hurts himself further.

Yea I get that, my thinking is there will at some point be an issue with the nature of the contract itself. Will Rugby start having to draw up certain contracts for ‘certain’people. What happens if dozens of PI players start posting the same scripture all at once? A sacking of Folau will officially represent one end of the spectrum. I dont think it will represent the best position ongoing. Like the weather is always trying to find it, balance will bring this harder line back in.

So quick to embrace whatever an employer wants. That’s a dystopian world you live in, disguised as reality. One that you embrace gladly. Not everyone thinks this way TWAS

As I said. I don’t think so. The biggest difference is the intent. He intended to broadcast this view publicly. Preaching in a church and being shared by a nosie reporter solely looking for a story is completely different.

but the question is if he was videoed and it was released on the internet and got into the press aka Network 9 news, would RA then have grounds to cancel his contract? Net effect would be the same as his instragram account - interesting question really. If the situation could get worse for RA, think this type of situation would be it. Would be interesting to consider what happens if this type of situation does occur - probably only a matter of time now.

Both Israel Folau and Pauline Hansen need to discover some self responsibility.

A majority of Australia is Christian. A majority of Australia has European heritage. A majority of Australians with European heritage are Christian. A majority of virtually every single European country is also Christian. So what you’re saying is that a minority of posters of a tiny minority of Australian rugby fans or a minority of atheists actively think Christian is rubbish. Is that your point?

I think it’s very sad. I can’t help but be upset by his suffering. That said, I don’t think RA are doing this with any malice towards Israel. I think the people on the RA Board honestly feel he’s left them no option.
