'It's going to be very difficult': Daryl Gibson on Tahs' play-off hopes

By The Roar / Editor

A defeat at the hands of the Jaguares has made the Waratahs bid to return to the Super Rugby play-offs very difficult.

I thought it had been a Labor seat forever rather than just these days, presuming they're included in the heinous lefties collective referred to. I didn't realise they don't play rugby. Geez, you learn something here nearly every day. I think everything that's happened has put the Tah's off. They just don't seem to be enjoying themselves. Too much distraction.

KCOL: They are nearly all left whingers in the Eastern Suburbs these days, the thought of little Phillip playing such a bully boy game is unthinkable! Randwick's head kicker in the 70's would not be welcome to many soirée's these days..

Didn’t Gibson get an extension for next year?

It’s not Gibson’s fault. The Tahs have been the great underachievers forever. The anomaly was Cheika’s two years there. And why Cheika? Because for all his faults, and he has them, he is a motivator. And what do the Eastern Sydney Tahs most need? Motivation. Tahs had a problem Pre Cheika. Lack of engagement- with fans, with their massive catchment (Wollongong To Tibooburra to Tweed Heads) with each other even. Now after the motivator’s brief visit the problem remains- lack of engagement. Get out of Moore Park, and the kick n clap politeness of eastern Sydney and find some tribal fans, engage with that tribal following in the rest of the state, starting with Parra Stadium and Newcastle. The Moore Park Tahs get the support that they have been culturally set up for.

In times past there were a number of Brumbies players that were pretty much had a lock on Wallabies selection. That team played well below its abilities with low energy at times and a seemed to go through the motions. Results were poor and player power removed a coach. Fans were less than impresssed and crowds went into decline. This entitlement mentality did not go until the "seniors" left until Jake White turned the Brumbies into a professional outfit. The Brumbies have since overachieved what their test representation would indicate. Regardless of the final score the Brumbies players since always give it a red hot go. I see the same complacency in Warratah players that comes from not having to defend their Wallabies spots every time they go on the paddock. Perhaps watching the next Test from the stands would fire up a few of the Tah stars.

Brumbies x Rebels = Wallabies

Tahs still have Brumbies, Rebels and Highlanders to play - 2 of those away games. Can't see them winning any of those and that would leave them near bottom of the overall table.

A good chance Tahs finish 2nd last on overall ladder, only ahead of the Wolves who they were 1:1 with...just.

All good Dazzler, you'll be able to get the players mandatory rests in now. Or are you still clinging to mathematical chances and going to go back on your commitment, one that every other Aussie Super coach has lived up to?

If Folau was still playing then I don't doubt that Gibson would shift KB to 12. In his absence it will remain Foketi. The only other options would be to shift AAC in and play Newsome or Rona at 13. Or try and manufacture a 12 out of a Mason/Foley - I think unless there is an injury it will need to be Foketi and AAC in the centres from here.

It looked to me like Hooper was thinking 'wonder who the next coach will be?'. Now watch them lift as the prospect of a new coach and trying to impress them starts. They leave their gameplay until the game is lost, they do it every season when the coach is a reasonable human! Their top 2" is so predictable, forget the carrot, the next coach just needs a big stick and the threat of no play for your total time on field, no start!

I understand the circumstances that have surrounded the Tahs this season (ground changes, player rest, Izzy) but the entire rugby program at NSW has not progressed under Daryl Gibson in any manner. He's been given his extension so I expect worse results next year when there will be the inevitable post world cup exodus.

I wonder who will play 12 for the Tahs now. Surely Beale cannot be considered there after his tackling efforts last night?
