'Oh my God!' TMO awards Brumby try despite being 'a mile offside'

How did they miss this?

Another example of an Australian referee who failed on the field as a Super Referee and was sacked, becoming a TMO, and still failing. Smith joins, Ayoub and Leckie as the culprits.

What was the TMO watching if he missed it. It’s not like the Gordon one a week ago. Lonergan was the chaser. It’s all he had to check. He shouldn’t be officiating this week after a blunder that bad.

Fair enough a ref can miss it live. But for the TMO to watch and say no clear evidence is just mind boggling! All the more absurd in the context of Gordon’s no try last week.

Gus was definitely watching the Tahs for a large portion of that match. We had one ruck where Harrison and McCaffrey arrived together at a Tahs ruck. Ruck has formed but McCaffrey was allowed a go at the ball anyway, Harrison went to ground in the cleanout attempt and got penalised. My thoughts were yep, Harrison left his feet but McCaffrey is the first offence. A mistake but not the worst. Then about 10 minutes later it was reversed, Dempsey and Simone arrive on a Brumbies ruck. Identical situation. Dempsey with hands on, Simone leaving his feet. Penalty against Dempsey for hands. Again that penalty can go either way, to me it just showed that Gardner was looking to ref one side. I don't think it was some conspiracy, just how he was watching the players. He probably doesn't see Lonergan offside because he's watching the Waratahs in defence.

Shouldn't have even got to the TMO, Gardner was inline with Lonergan a couple of metres behind him, he had full site of both kicker & chaser. What does Agnes ref with his eyes closed now?

That was Wright knocking the ball back in, I thought he was in the field of play when he tossed it in. The ball travelled about 6.5m forward though from his toss before Newsome touched it going over his own try line. Maybe it was momentum and it was backwards from the hands but he looked to be slowing down before he tossed it to me. TMO seemingly didn't even look at how the ball got to where Newsome touched it, just that Newsome was the one to bring it into the in-goal. If someone like Ben Skeen or a SA TMO in SA had a performance like this bloke we'd never hear the end of it. Fully agree - nothing should distract from the Tahs own shortcomings but the poor performance of the officials should also be called out.

TMO had a bad night last night. There was this "try". Before this, Brumbies winger goes out to knock ball back in, standing in the sideline when he passed back infield. Wright's first try came from a terrible forward pass that was allowed. Nothing would have got the Tahs into the game. They were comprehensively beaten.
