And the first thing Link should have done after the EOYT is looked at how he could improve team.
At the time that was probably the biggest thing. Had Mowen been around last year you probably actually have a real need for him with better ball running in the pack.
Sure, but i wasn’t commenting as to why Mowen came in. I was pointing out that despite the lack of a ball runner in the back row, it was still the best the team has looked since 2006 in my opinion. Despite the lack of the ball runner, it worked
And we had that problem in 2013 because players were injured.
When they came back Mowen wasn't a certain starter. That said I think the issue is, he's not certain in your 23. If he's in your best 23 then you start him for his leadership I think.
We had the same problem in the 2013 spring tour though. No big ball carrier. It was still the best we looked since about 06 though.
And let’s face it, none of our 8 options were so fantastic that we really sacrificed anything. We had less ball running than with Higgers or Palu, but we had an incredibly strong line out, were superb at the breakdown and had our best captain.
In 2015 we still had a back row without a ball runner, but with inferior captaincy and line out to boot.
Just to comment further. I think Fardy solidifying his place probably makes Mowen more redundant.
Without Fardy being a certain pick you'd easily have Mowen float between 6 and 8 depending on who is in form and fit.
Problem is with Mowen, where does your ball running come from? Fardy doesn't provide it. The back row at the time was late careerHorwill and Simmons so not strong runners there.
I agree with the premise that one better player may not be better than an inferior player who is a good leader.
But some of your best players are in the back row, and the shortcomings there with Mowen would only be exasperated with the rest of the balance of the pack.
Line out tho....
Yeah, definitely, suddenly the leadership group went from the experienced heads at the Brumbies and Reds to being dominated by fairly young Waratahs.
I think only an insane person wouldn’t have picked Mowen despite. It was the best captained the Australian side had looked for at least a decade. Then add to the fact that Mowen and Fardy going so hard at the ball allowed Hooper to be the most effective he had probably ever been. If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. Look at how much worse England is now that Hartley is gone, even though George is a massive upgrade around the field.
I reckon Moore and Quade getting injured was part of it too. Suddenly had a real shift in the team. Mowen going overseas also, though he probably struggles to make the 2014 team on form.

2013 to Nick Cummins from memory. Goodness be played well that tour and goodness that was a good team. If only Link hadn’t resigned. Sigh.
