Adelaide United have defeated Brisbane Roar 1-0 at Coopers Stadium in the last game of A-League Round 5.
The game started with Adelaide United having all of the ball, as Brisbane Roar looked to get every man behind the ball.
Adelaide United dealt with this well and didn’t mind keeping possession and recycling play from the back and wide onto the wings.
Part of the reason why they didn’t mind being pressured is that it meant that attacking midfielder turned deep playmaker James Troisi was allowed a lot of time on the ball to pick out his passes.
He often tried to force the pass when a simple ball would have allowed the Adelaide United forwards to check their runs and go again, but he may have been asked to consistently pressure the Brisbane defence.
Al-Hassan Toure scored, but it was correctly deemed offside but the linesmen.
In the final twenty minutes of the first half, Brisbane Roar started to come into the game. In the second half, it was all Adelaide again until the final 25 minutes, and more noticeably when Dylan Wenzel-Halls came on in the 74th minute.
However, it was Adelaide who finally broke the deadlock, which some great play from Troisi. He was finally unleashed and was allowed to go further forward, and after driving at the defence played a clever one-two with Nikola Mileusnic and cut it back stunningly to Riley McGree who scored a tap in to make it four goals in three games.
Overall, it was a game that Adelaide dominated, and Brisbane Roar still has the problem of scoring goals.
Starting Dylan Wenzel-Halls will help that, and hopefully, he can see more minutes in the next few games.
Adelaide was allowed time on the ball and eventually made use of it and prevailed 1-0.

Adelaide United 1
Brisbane Roar 0

Going into this clash, Adelaide United look already to be the clear favourites. However, despite scoring five goals to Brisbane’s one, and having the better squad on paper, they are only one point apart, with Adelaide in eighth place and Brisbane in ninth.
Adelaide United had a bye last weekend, and it will be interesting to see how that affects their play. Adelaide United will be without key players George Blackwood, Jordan Elsey and Mirko Boland to injury, but perhaps the biggest blow is loss of eighteen-year-old star defensive-midfielder Louis D’Arrigo due to international duty.
D’Arrigo has been prolific in midfield, and his loss will hurt Adelaide and manager Gertjan Verbeek. However, it is unlikely that the D’Arrigo will stop them from winning, as Brisbane Roar just haven’t been able to find the back of the net.
As mentioned earlier, they have only scored one goal in three games, and last week, despite dominating Western Sydney Wanderers, they couldn’t get the ball past the goal line.
This is a worry for Robbie Fowler, and he will be wanting a few more goals from the forty-seven shots that Brisbane have had so far this season.
A player to watch out for on the Adelaide United team is James Troisi, who excelled last game in a deep-playmaker role, where he was allowed to drop and try and find the killer pass from further back, which confused the Newcastle Jets two weeks ago.
A key player for Newcastle Jets is Matthew Millar, who has started every one of Newcastle’s games so far and is dangerous bombing down the right flank and could cause problems for either Al-Hassan Toure or Nikola Mileusnic, who both sometimes are reluctant to defend.
My prediction is 2-0 to Adelaide United.

Apologies for the misunderstanding; I didn't mean to apply that "getting men behind the ball" was a new tactic. As for your point about the fans, that is very true. If few will come to watch your team concede loads of goals, like last season, then fewer will come to watch you lose something like 1-0 every game.

Jack - "Getting men behind the ball" is not a new tactic in football. It has been going on since 1936 when the Swiss national team.recognising it's own weaknesses, decided to move players back from the accepted 2-3-5 formation to a 1-3-3-3 formation and this started a movement in top European football culminating in the years 1965/68 when Inter Milan became the recognised masters of "catenaccio", a tactical ploy that almost sent Italian football into bankruptcy, as fans started to stay away in their thousands. That what's you were watching in the first half of this game, and, if continued to be practised, will have the same effect on Roar fans. What was ignored by the practitioners of this tactic was that the main aim of football is to score more goals than your opponent. They were quite content to score one goal then bring the game into disrepute by boring onlookers almost to distraction. It is something the A-League can do without. Cheers jb.
