Adelaide United will take on the Central Coast Mariners at Coopers Stadium, Adelaide in the second A-League Elimination Final as both fight to book a place in the semi finals.. Join The Roar for live scores from 4:05pm AEST.
Considering that Adelaide won just one game in their opening 10 rounds, the fact that they made finals at all is pretty impressive, and to finish the season in fourth place is something that will give them confidence going into this elimination match.
They’ve developed a strong dressing room culture under Carl Veart and Craig Goodwin has found some great form upfront. But perhaps most exciting aspect of their season so far has been the ability for their youth to have a genuine impact on results. 18-year-olds Mohamed Toure and Bernardo Oliveira and the even younger Nestory Irankunda have become club heroes. Sadly for the team Toure and Nick Ansell have suffered from long term injuries but other than Carl Veart’s squad has a clean bill of health.
Just like Adelaide, the Mariners have been on a great winning run with five in a row leading up to today’s clash. However they haven’t won in South Australia for six years and will also be looking to their youth to help them overcome this record. Their squad’s average age is just a few days over 25 years old but coach Nick Montgomery believes that the season of ups and downs means that they have learnt a lot and are in a good position to achieve success.
“You’ve seen how galvanised we’ve been over the last 15 games, we’ve had a lot of adversity, we’ve dealt with a lot of stuff on and off the pitch. We don’t fear anybody, we don’t fear going anywhere,” said Montgomery this week.

CCM failed because they didnt have Dan Hall and started lazy Urena, I dont know where you got this great front three idea when Urena has hardly started with Cummings and we saw why. Cummings as well he is ineffective against any sort of real defence. If he had a touch more pace he would have easily got to the ball in the penalty area where Popovic launched a crazy sliding challenge, it still looked like a penalty anyway but it would have been a super clear penalty.

Mariners needed to win two away games just to make the grand final. It was always going to be a big ask.

Hopefully he'll see his career out with Adelaide. We need players like him to be made marquees and stay.

Well played both teams. Would love Mariners to have made it through, but alas.

No hall hurt us, but in that game it was the lack of incisive passing in the final third that cost us. I can't think of once I that game Urena, Cummings, Kuol, Nkololo, Cy challenged. That was a great team defensive effort not only to keep them out, but to avoid pressure Gauci.

I despise the fact we lost that game, but resentfully they were better team on the day. What is Goodwin doing in the Aleague?

Need more personalities like Yengi in the league. Loved his goal celebration. Looking forward to the City v Adelaide game on Wednesday.

I worry every time we step onto a pitch. And so should a Glover, I reckon he’s overconfident in his abilities. Has at times gone for the same ball as our defender, outside the box mind you

The first of the big derbies in a grand final - it wouldn't surprise for the 2 Melbourne teams to create history. What an amazing sound/spectacle it would be.

If they can get 3 against Birra, how many might they get against Glover if he hasn't regained his form?

Can see Adelaide getting a result at home but not so sure over 2 legs

The Mariners have done so well again and for once they should be able to hold on to their squad and look to next season with confidence. Will Melbourne City be too fresh and too good for Adelaide on Wednesday and on the weekend following?

Too good, Adelaide. You’re going to give the final’s race a real shake-up. Would I like to see you win against the big boys? Yes I would. Mariners, you made the top six with a fantastic team. You’re in good hands with Monty. Stay strong. That’s two great seasons, CCM. Upwards & onwards.
