A semi-final date with Sydney FC awaits for the Brisbane Roar and Adelaide United as they lock horns in an elimination final in Redcliffe. Don’t miss a moment of this second elimination final with live scores on The Roar from 3:05pm (AEST).

Macarthur FC’s upset win over the Mariners last night has ensured the victor here will take on the Sky Blues next week for a place in the A-League final – a difficult task, but we have already seen in this finals series that boilovers can and will happen.

The Roar head into the finals with serious question marks over their recent form, after a purple patch saw them steamroll their way clear of a mid-table logjam and into the last six. They’ve won just three of their last eight matches, including defeats to the Sky Blues and their opponents today, United. However, their stunning 3-0 triumph over ladder-leaders Melbourne City two weeks ago is proof of how damaging they can be in full flight.

Captain Tom Aldred is a huge inclusion for the Roar; the Englishman has been a critical part of their defence over the last two years, and his big game experience will come in handy.

The Reds’ form hasn’t been crash hot themselves; they’ve won only once since that win over the Roar, and only twice since early April. Back then, Carl Vaert’s men were gunning for the Premiers Plate; fast forward to now, and they might have been lucky to simply sneak into the finals. Their defence is looking suddenly leaky, too: they’ve conceded more goals than any other finalist, giving up four in a thumping loss to the Sky Blues and two in a draw with the Wanderers in their most recent two matches.

In a major blow, star forward Craig Goodwin will miss the trip north, having suffered an ankle injury at training. It’s unknown whether he will be fit to take on the Sky Blues should the Reds manage to prevail without him.

United also have history against them here: they’re yet to win a final outside South Australia from nine starts, while the Roar haven’t tasted defeat at the pointy end of the season in Queensland. But without a rollicking Suncorp Stadium crowd to cheer them on, can the Roar get the job done in Redcliffe?

JB, Thank! You mean there was no reason Gillesphy should play.

cool-n -cold. The "big-man" referred to is Gillesphy ,who ,as someone else has pointed out, is leaving Roar at season's end. Have you not noticed that he is quite good at corner kicks and set pieces coming forward and to the best of my knowledge has scored more than a few goals from these "excursions". Don't know if you have handled players but personally I have never found an experienced player who would knock back a game playing up front. jb

JB, I do think that many of the changes in recent weeks were caused by the need to rest some players during a fairly hectic schedule, and injuries to several defenders, but I do agree, especially regards Neville who I've grown to particularly like, watching him closely following your comments. Looking forward to next season.

JB, "...would have tried the big man up front as a target man"" I do not understand. Tell in simple words please. Who was the big man?

Harry Selassie, I think the move has been a success in the grand scheme of things. They would have got close to a full house for that ANZAC game had it not been postponed, and the several midweek fixtures they ended up playing wreaked havoc with average attendances. The most important point to note when it comes to Brisbane Roar moving to Redcliffe is simply that they were going broke at Suncorp Stadium. Better to have a full boutique stadium the next town over, I would have thought, than no football club to support at all.

coolncold. - Some shrewd observations in this piece. I especially like the point of isolating Gillesphy as a potential goal scorer. For weeks now we have witnessed cross after cross being fed into the opposition box yet not a Roar player physically able to each them. With a plethora of centre backs available one would think that by now the management, with the almost constant changing in team make up, would have tried the big man up front as a target man. What did the team have to lose". Nothing that just a little imagination may have cured the team's eternal problem, no goals. Cheers jb.

absolutely Mike. I have not missed a single game all season, including recent mid-week matches in the wet with 3000+ crowd, and this was way more than the announced figure. There were a few empty seats on the fringes, I'd say a few hundred, no more.

Lionheart- In recent weeks we have seen constant change, and trial, of different people in different positions. Have the management learned from this experimentation? ,it would appear not for with at least 5 successful centre-backs playing in recent weeks we saw the best potential wing back in the Roar squad, (imo), Neville, constantly reduced to fragmented attacks down the right side of the team because of the apparent need to have him in the recognised back 3, introduced way back under Fowler. He would, in that position, be a huge help to O'Shea who is constantly put under pressure playing beside different midfielders almost every week. This constant changing of players indicate a certain "weakness" in the selection of the team, it's as if the management don't know what their best tactical line up is and who are the best players to fill those positions. Pity ,it could have been such a good year. Cheers jb.

hardly the way to build the game in Australia. They were just like Western United in that second half, shameful in the last 20 minutes. If Roar ever adopt that style I'm lost to the A League I'm afraid.

Thanks JB. It must have been a hard decision for coach Moon, which centre back pair to play, and Hingert. He opted for experience when his strong suit all season has been his faith in the youngsters. I don't hold it against him, not a decision I'd like to make. I always said this was about next season for Roar. I hope Moon has leant the absolute need for a quality striker, and it's not Mebrathu.

Kudo and Macdonald were supposed to provide that but unfortunately neither went the distance. I was really surprised and disappointed by Macdonald's leaving.

Gillesphy should not play because he let Ibini scored easily. Gillesphy should not play because he had not played for 2 weeks. Gillesphy should play because 2 goals lost at the left side when Courtney-Perkins played in the match vs Sydney a week ago. Gillesphy should play because he has the ability to score in corners. Aldred should not play because he has injury, no form and not played 2 weeks. Trewin and Courtney-Perkins survived Keogh, Fornaroli and Castro 2 weeks ago. Why not? Surprise! Naive!

Nail on the head JB. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Aldred starting. Shame road couldn't get that final ball in the net from all the goalmouth chances. On to next year.

You are right Ben but I was really trying to get a reaction from AA who has been going on about Brisbane's long ball game and other teams parking the bus and feigning injury when his own team did it (including a decent amount of hoofball when under pressure). I suppose the ends justify the means?

Gillesphy played like someone who's decided not to be at the club next season and Aldred played like someone who hasn't played a full game for weeks due to injuries. I know hindsight is 20/20 but when the replacements have been doing well I don't get it. Another grievance, the referee's reluctance to punish time wasting. He gave 1 yellow for it for over 70 minutes of Adelaide winding down the clock. They will happily take a yellow if it means they get free reign to spend 5-10 minutes over the game taking their goal kicks, free kicks, throw ins, subs etc as slowly as possible. It's not a punishment. All in all, happy with the season overall. These youngsters are going to get better and better.

Stadium looked full on the TV view I had. Mike, what's your view on Brisbane Roar's move to Dolphin Stadium, would you consider it 1) a success and 2)beneficial to the team?

So much for home advantage eh? To be honest, the better team on the day won both elimination finals.
