The Brisbane Roar host Melbourne Victory at Suncorp Stadium with a chance to grab their second win of the season. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:50pm (AEDT).

Brisbane’s season remains stuck in first gear after what appeared a promising start. Since the first few weeks of the league, where they peppered the goal without being able to grab the wins many felt they deserved, things have slowly but surely slipped away.

Sitting in ninth place and in serious danger of claiming the unenviable wooden spoon, new manager Darren Davies has a heck of a task trying to lift his team’s performance and spirit in order to salvage something from this year.

The season has just passed its halfway point and there are plenty of opportunities to do it, but the players need to make the change if the Roar are to save any face in 2018/19.

Things look a whole lot better for the Melbourne Victory, sitting high on the table and with marquee man Keisuke Honda getting closer to a return by the day. Ola Toivonen has taken up the slack in his absence and James Troisi has supported him well up front.

Defensively they have been sound, with Thomas Deng and Leigh Broxham leading the way at the back.

This will be a considerable challenge for the Roar and the Victory will need to resist the temptation of complacency.

Prediction
Predicting a Roar win here would be either brave or stupid depending on the result. I can’t do it. Even in fourth gear, the Victory should be able to handle the Roar.

Look for another good effort from the northerners, yet the class on the pitch will tell in the end and Melbourne will snatch the points.

Stuart. Thanks for the rundown on the game. Nice to see you use the word "mysterious" in describing the Roar team's apparent improvement late in the first half , I find "mysterious" a strange way of describing an obvious "taking the foot of the pedal" by the important Victory midfielders, a factor obviously sorted out during the break. It was during this period we started to notice Lopez and Caletti push forward on the field and "strut their stuff" as attackers, supplying Taggart and D'Agostino some good service and suddenly the small crowd got excited, as shot after shot forced the Victory custodian into action, even though your statistics show that only 29% of those shots hit the target. Compare that with Victory's figures of 12 shots with 7 on target,a huge 58% improvement in accuracy. Those figures alone tell the story of this game, a team struggling to find some cohesion in their overall play and another team confident in their ability to see out a "bad patch" and punish their opponents accordingly. Nothing "mysterious" just football as it is played. Thanks again . Cheers jb.

Nick - An interesting observation. To take it a step further the opening 2 home games attracted 14,860 and 15,130. The following 4 home games have seen drops to,9,925,10,289,9,428 and 7,131. so it could be argued that Roar's form has seen an overall drop in attendances, on aggregate, of around 23,000 fans. This in turn would represent conservatively a dollar value of $600,000. Now it would be correct to say that there could be other factors involved as to why these crowds have dropped so alarmingly, but, despite these reasons, the dollar value "lost" does not change. If that doesn't stir owner/management into action then what will? jb

Think you are right...and the "acting" Manager won't be part of the next season! Who else thinks Connor O'toole (a fine fullback prospect...) is a centre-half?

That figure sound speculative at best. Anyway what’s with all the mid week fixtures?

Even as a United fan, I had to admire Victory tonight, however Brisbane had 21 shots to Victory 12, would have been more of a contest if Brisbane could have scored as obvious as it sounds, seems to be a problem the Roar have atm in finishing, i read that now Victory have scored more goals at suncorp than the Roar

The difference in what was happening in and around the respective goals, it was vast. Partly, that was because Roar were wanting to push forward to the very end, and good on them for that, but....talk about an open invitation down back. And of course, partly it's because the victory has the resources currently to exploit such an open invitation.

Roar can officially start planning for next season. That was a none too pretty rout.

The Melbourne Victory have well and truly put the cleaners through Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium, to the tune of five goals to nil. It looked like being a tough night for the home side as soon as Ola Toivonen headed home after 15 minutes. The pattern of play suggested that there were plenty more goals to come for the Victory. Mysteriously, the game swung and the Roar had the better of the latter stages of the first half. So much so, that they were unlucky not to go into the sheds level. Victory held their one goal lead into the break and doubled it as soon as play resumed with a goal to Kosta Barbarouses. (Remember that name) Frankly, it appeared to break the hearts of the home side and when Storm Roux headed home in the 65th minute the match was well and truly sealed for the visitors. However, Barbarouses was not done and he added two more goals to complete a hat-trick in the 72nd and 87th minutes to truly embarrass the home side. In what is a busy schedule of football, the Victory just keep winning and the Roar just keep losing. With both clubs having a second match on the weekend it will be interesting to see how they pull-up, line-up and respond after this clash. Final Score Brisbane Roar 0 Melbourne Victory 5

Probably not an exaggeration to suggest that there is a gulf between 2nd top and 2nd bottom.
