Two sides sitting outside the top six meet when Brisbane Roar face Melbourne Victory at Moreton Daily Stadium in Redcliffe. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3pm (AEDT).

After beginning the season brilliantly against the Sky Blues on the opening weekend of action, the Victory have since struggled; beaten by cross-town rivals City last week and losing to Western Sydney at AAMI Park in what was a surprise result.

Brisbane appear to be getting their season into gear after snatching a point against the Wanderers on the road last week to go with the one earned in the opening round of the season, in the dour affair against Macarthur.

The loser today will take something of an emotional and humbling hit, with the teams at the top end potentially around eight points clear of them after a full month of play. The winner will most likely move inside the top six, yet a point each could see the jury remain out for both and plenty of work to do through the middle of the season should they have aspirations of securing a spot in the play-offs.

Portuguese recruit Nani was the culprit that gave City the chance to take the lead from the penalty spot last Saturday and an own goal made things even more difficult for Victory, as they battled away in the second half with ten men.

Charlie Austin scored the goal for Brisbane to sink the Wanderers; something the fans up north will be hoping is repeated many times across the season.

Key team news sees Josh Brillante out for the visitors, having been suspended after his red card in the Derby last week.

There is always a little fire and plenty of history between these two teams, with many a finals match having been played out in controversial circumstances over the years.

Hopefully the Roar fans make the trip to Moreton Daily in droves, with their team in search of that one key win to get the 2022/23 season rolling.

Prediction

The sheer class and depth of the Victory squad suggests they are a better football team than a developing Brisbane, yet home field and a good crowd could level up the contest somewhat.

It is hard to see Victory losing three in a row and tough to see Brisbane finding the net multiple times and earning the win against what is a potent Victory attack when in full flight.

Victory to win 3-2 in a cracking affair.

fit yes, but not 90 minute fit JB. Mileusnic must be close to full fitness as this is his second week off the bench, when he is full fit he will start, same Hore (first week on bench). Zabala was on the bench, first time this season. Austin was defending a bit but he wasn’t roaming like you suggest. I’ve kept a close eye on that since you first mentioned it, and he does occasionally but it’s pretty rare. There’s still talk of Zulo and Kruse who are training with the squad. Moon was asked about them again in his post match interview and he said that when they’re fit they would see (I read that as he’d like to sign them but negotiations can’t start until they prove their fitness).

Lionheart. Just one thing wrong with your observation, Mileusnic and Hore went on to the field as subs yesterday so one has to assume that in the eyes of the manager they were both fit. Their spell on the field was probably Roar's best time in the match. I was late into the telecast so didn't know whether Zabala was also on the bench, but if he was, he would have been the automatic replacement for Hingert, leaving Trewin to protect the back three. As it was, such was the poor performance of the midfielders selected, that by the end Austin was back to his roaming back just to get a kick, that was until the substitutions were made. Cheers jb.

hopefully Mileusnic, Hore, Zabala and a few others will make a difference in midfield JB, when they're fit

Lionheart-you are starting to notice the strange goings-on off the ball. What about the team selection?. Last week it became obvious that in Neville,Aldred and Chapman, Moon had found his best "back 3" and some learned advice was that he should now concentrate on improving the midfield in order to create chances for the front men. So, what did we get? It would appear Trewin was given the job that had been done by the injured Hingert at wing back in a 5 man midfield with the Roar's only true playmaker lost in the meanderings of Akbari and Danzaki who between them don't appear to have any idea as to how the system actually works, Courtney- Perkins, who showed great attack mindedness last week, was curtailed by the lack of opportunity created for him. Trewin looked to be suffering with the same problem, the lad is a committed defender and his positional play showed that he had very little idea of what he was supposed to achieve in attack. So, the onus was once again placed on the back 5 to hold the fort while Austin and the other front men waited for the "service" that never came with any regularity. So, another week passed with little or no improvement in the scoring department a factor all created in the midfield , the engine room of any team. Ok we got a point from a game but it was purely a "defensive victory", and it would appear we are no nearer solving the main problem. Cheers jb.

So why was the red card given? It looked pretty innocuous at the game. D'aggers leads with a high boot and misses the ball, Holmes barely touches D'aggers but he goes down and stays down (not for the first time in this match, missing his daddy who thinks Redcliffe's too far from the Goldie even though half Roar players live there). Plenty of defenders in play, not least Aldred. Referee shows no interest whatsoever, plays on. Victory and Roar players show no interest whatsoever, play on. Down on the benches Popavich doesn't react but notices his player stays down and goes ballistic, again. Gets his way, again. That's what I saw at the ground. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm with Moon, that will be overturned. That ref should be banished and players and coaches who try to influence decisions by the ref should be carded.

Agreed. I’ll miss Kuol at CCM, but the EPL’s calling him, lucky lad. Happy to hang onto Cummings. They’d be a dream duo at the World Cup.

What a second half. I want Garang to grow, but I want him to stay. Kuol and Cummings have to go to the World Cup and they play so well together.

Gutsy effort from the home side and Victory really battling with connections in attack. Would have loved a goal but hey, them's the breaks.

Holmes cost Roar the game. Anyway the team actually turned up and played well. However they need a striker big time.

Whilst the Victory were the better team for much of the game, Roar deserve plenty of credit for toughing things out, especially in the second half when down to ten men. Final Score Brisbane Roar………………....0 Melbourne Victory…………..0
