Macarthur FC and Wellington Phoenix will go head to head in Macarthur’s second-ever home game when they play at Campbelltown Stadium this afternoon. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from kick-off at 5:05pm (AEDT).
Both sides are bouncing back from losses, although each came in relatively different circumstances.
Wellington Phoenix is coming off a 2-1 loss to Sydney FC, but the reigning champions needed two wonder strikes from midfielders Calem Nieuwenhof and Luke Brattan to secure victory.
Comically, Wellington’s goal was not seen live after a technical error caused all of Fox Sports’s cameras to go down for a few minutes, and in that time period the Phoenic dug up an equaliser from youngster Mirza Muratovic.
Muratovic’s positioning throughout the game was interesting. He played on the right side of midfield in a lopsided 4-2-2-2 formation, a place we haven’t seen him in before.
I assumed when Ufuk Talay signed the former Brisbane Roar player that he would be played up top, and with David Ball more than capable of taking his position, it was interesting to see.
Muratovic does have the technical ability to play there but last year was seen at Brisbane in a forward role, where he could drop off the highest line to help link play.
Wellington had a good game but struggled to make and convert any clear-cut chances. However, it is likely we will see a change, with their two superstars, Ulises Davila and Tomer Hemed, returning from injuries.
Davila in particular has to get fit as soon as possible. The attacking midfielder scored 12 and had a hand in five additional goals last season. He progresses the ball forwards brilliantly and is fantastic on the turn. He was a key part of Wellington’s side last season and could have a big impact against Macarthur.
Macarthur themselves have had an interesting start to life in the A-League. A big win in their first game against Western Sydney Wanderers made for a good start, but they stumbled in their first-ever home game, losing 2-0 to the Central Coast Mariners.
They already seem to be a side reliant on ball retention and possession – they had 55 per cent of the ball against the Wanderers and 70 per cent against the Mariners – and they have some quality players, but it will be interesting to see how quickly the squad gels together.
Markel Susaeta impressed in the 30 minutes but lacks match fitness, which is something that will improve, while his halftime replacement, Benat Etxebarria, was also a threat from deep with his long-range passing.
It will be interesting to see the tactical trends behind this game, with both sides preferring to keep possession and build up slowly from the back.
I predict Macarthur will have more of the ball, with Ufuk Talay showing versatility last season to often adjust his side’s game during periods. They would often rotate between periods of the high press and building out from the back before switching to a more vertical style of football, also with pressure at times, although from deeper positions.
However, despite that versatility, I think Macarthur will come out on top. The quality of their players will shine through, and with every game they will improve. I believe Matt Derbyshire will open his A-League account, although Macarthur is yet to score from open play in the two games they’ve played so far.
They will need to create some more clear-cut chances to have a chance in this match, and although I think they will, it remains to be seen.

Woeful? I wouldn't say 4 points from 3 games is woeful, it will still take a bit of time for an entirely new team to gel. I expect Macarthur to finish from 5th-8th. We were the better team v WSW and CCM, and for the last 25 minutes yesterday (thanks to an absolute joke of a red card). Probably deserved to lose yesterday but happy we managed to pick up a point.

Let’s hope none of these, officials are running next weeks derby.

I would agree that the Bulls had a bit of luck last night. Nix was the better team, and played like a cohesive unit, at times, the Bulls appeared to lack such cohesion. Still, we got the point, and showed signs here and there. That's probably good enough for the time being.

Bulls continue to look woeful, they should’ve lost all 3 games theyve played. Have been second best in all of them. No way are they qualifying for the finals

Thanks a lot for joining me for this afternoons A-League coverage! Unfortunately, we have to wait seven days for the next A-League fixture but it is set to be a cracker - a Sydney derby between Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers. Have a great night and week, and I'll hopefully see everyone soon! Bye for now.

Match report: Wellington Phoenix has held Macarthur FC to a 1-1 draw here at Campbelltown stadium in a game filled with lots of ups and downs. Wellington was without question the better side in the first half. In the first ten minutes, Tomer Hemed showed brilliant awareness to drift off Macarthur’s high defensive line into a pocket of space and play passes in behind. David Ball and Hemed consistently swapped positions, with one occupying an advanced forward role and one in a deeper position, with Ball also often drifting out wide. In the 3rd minute, they showed their understanding, as Hemed drifted over to the right and picked up possession. A good first touch allowed him to play a pass-through to David Ball, who ran towards the touchline. His late cross found left-back James McGarry at the back post who showed great technique to shoot first time off the volley. Wellington continued like this, having the majority of chances and keeping the ball well in midfield. They finally got their deserved goal, although it came relatively late in the half. In the 38th minute, good play in midfield from Wellington allowed Ulises Davila to receive possession. He turned and found multiple runners ahead of him and chose McGarry, classily sliding a ball through Macarthur’s defence. McGarry took a good first touch forwards and cut the ball back, finding the unmarked David Ball near the penalty spot. Ball made no mistake in converting his chance. The game settled down from there, with Macarthur struggling to create any chances. However, in the 60th minute, the game was flipped on his head. A tackle between Alex Rufer and Denis Genreau went to VAR, and the referee judged Rufer to have kicked out at his fellow midfielder. Rufer received a red card and all of a sudden Macarthur were in a good position to gain three points from this clash. They showed intent to do so in the 66th minute when their two Spanish imports combined to create an equaliser. Benat found himself in space and continued a run forwards, before clipping a ball through towards Markel Susaeta. Susaeta took a touch and buried his shot in the bottom right corner. But the game took a stalemate from there, with both sides struggling to create chances. Wellington sat deep in a 4-4-1 formation and absorbed pressure. They deserved more out of this game and on another day could have found themselves cruising to a win. Meanwhile, Macarthur still doesn’t look like the real deal in my opinion. In three matches they have scored two goals; one a lucky deflection off a freekick and the other coming against ten men. Despite having class all around the park they have struggled to create chances and Matt Derbyshire has hardly had a sniff at goal. Despite having more of the ball in the last thirty minutes (due to Wellington being reduced to ten men) they didn’t necessarily look like the better side. Someone in this Macarthur side is going to have to step up and provide more going forwards for them to be successful this season. The A-League’s newest team next play Newcastle Jets in eight days away from home, while Wellington has to wait just over two weeks for their next competitive fixture, which is also against Newcastle. Final score: Macarthur FC 0 Wellington Phoenix 0

BS red card cost us the game, no way he kicked out!. Bulls like SFC and Roar are always favored by the FFA, refs and VAR.

Pretty controversial reffing for both the red card and the lack of injury time added at the end.
