You just have to see Van Egmond in the highlights when she is in the picture she is moving at snails pace while breathing really hard that says it all. The first step for improvement is simple leave her out of the squad.
Speed, fitness is lacking I saw plenty of this in W-league but its quite evident the players that are performing are not being given credit by the commentators versus old hands who seem to have a hall pass to dawdle around and then get all the plaudits.
I didn't see the game but the goal keeping and defence looked horrendous in the highlights. They really have been poor for a while now but if the new coach can bring on the American style of play that is a giant step forward. The USA woman go out to score goals and win the game. The mindset of the Matildas has been to try and not lose as evidenced by backwards passing from the kickoff.
We are very close to the whole starting XI now playing professionally in Europe, perhaps we are already there, meaning at a minimum, I would expect the Matildas to remain in the top 10 teams in the world, which is a pretty good achievement.
To remain a top 10 team in a home world cup means you are a decent chance to battle it out for a semi-final spot in a WC, which, once again, would be a huge achievement if it materialises.
Having said that, we are clearly well off the pace of the best 4 teams in the world at the moment, and in reality, that gap probably won't be closed.
Never were podium contenders. The two North American teams and the Europeans have moved forward in a big way. Despite the hype even hosting the event, think they will be lucky to make it beyond the quarter finals. I hope i am wrong.
Andy you are spot on with your comments. I have seen "staj" in action many times and the way he treated girls/women was disgraceful. He is probably different with the men as they wouldn't put up with his form of "discipline" and "strict rule".
Very true John, the Matildas often punched above their weight before but it has been sometime since they have been beaten so comprehensively like they were in these two games. Perhaps the short training period together under a new coach affected that, and I want to believe, with more time together this team would not be defeated so badly, hopefully these defeats act as the catalyst to get this team playing better.
The latest FIFA ranking has the Matildas at no. 7 in the world, with top 4 streets ahead 1. U.S.A 2. Germany 3. France 4. Netherlands. Not sure if we fit into the next bracket of Sweden, England and Brasil at the moment. Remains to be seen, but we always punched above our weight in the past and never spoke of 'reality checks', worrying times ahead.
Perhaps a lesson in humility for the Matildas? They know now they have a lot of work to do. They should use the Olympics as a means to build a team for 2023. That means in Tokyo use players who should help you in 2023
people can say friendlies are meaningless, but thats a lot of goals conceeded in 2 games.
Are people still confident about them even finishing in podium place for the world cup?

Andy, you are delusional. Please refrain from stirring the pot.

Still think Lisa De Vanna would be handy to settle the younger heads. That aside Matildas will have done well to finish top 8.

That 'creep' ... to this day nothing against him has been substantiated. Perhaps you can share why he is a 'creep'.
