The Socceroos have released a statement calling for Qatar to decriminalise same-sex marriage, and calling for equitable treatment for its migrant workers.
and now the tournament is over and all the professional players who virtual signalled have done is.........played their games, got their pay and glory and returned home.
Now what? Totally meaningless.
So many experts here know what others should do with their money.
They just don't want to spend their own.
Our very racist Australia owns a record with First Nations people which is about as bad as it gets so feel free to lecture other countries in your woeful and pathetic ignorance.
I just hope some good football is played.
Yet Cricket Australia has no issues with playing against the likes of Pakistan and Afghanistan where their laws against minorities and woman are just as barbaric. Eg stoning and whipping woman is set in law!
And hopefully they don’t get the Adam Goodes, Eddie Betts, etc treatment. It would be good if a few AFL players were brave enough and came out and made a video about the racism issue in AFL.
Of course – footy! You mean the “footy” where you have the ball in your hands and tucked under your arms when you run with it and then you score points by placing it over a line with your hands? Or is it the footy where you have it in your hands and bounce and catch it every so often and catch a mark in your hands? You don’t mean the football where you use your feet to trap, control, pass, kick the ball and score goals! That’s right – footy!
Well there's your first problem. Educate them and get them to display their talents on the world stage instead of a provincial small game where their talents are wasted.
I'd argue it's better than what any other nation has done so far. All England have done is wear rainbow armbands, all Denmark (a country seen as quite progressive) have done is wear 'toned-down' kits. However, I agree it won't change anything; it sends the right message but achieves little.
You mean drug addicts, thats why I like to donate to overseas charities.
You can spend billions on drug addicts and it will go nowhere.
People can be incredibly resourceful in poorer countries and a little bit of money will go a long way if you can get it straight to them.
Spot on Grem. I doubt any boycott, video, stance, etc will change the system they have in place in Qatar. But boycotting it will I believe, only make things worse and make zero difference. Yes it would hurt them but it would hurt Australian football even more (FIFA would be very vindictive). Why should the players bear the full brunt? They didn't choose Qatar as the host.
If you are doing all that then credit to you, you are definitely doing your bit. I’m assuming you’re helping our indigenous communities and the fact this needs to be done is a blight on our country. You would definitely be doing more than me. It’s interesting what you wrote about the players, though.
“So maybe the players are actually donating money but not telling anyone? Mate if you believe that then I’ve got a bridge for sale you might be interested in.” Who knows what they are doing? I do know awareness is being raised by what they’ve done. Most people had no idea about this situation before the World Cup but now they do and positive changes may occur. At the least they are continuing the discussion that can help.
Thanks for the offer but I think I’ll just keep doing what I’ve doing for the last 20 years thanks. Living and working in the North West of WA supporting some of the most underprivileged families in the country who are dealing with issues you couldn’t even start to comprehend. I rekon I’m doing my bit mate, how about you? Apart from banging away on your phone ‘raising awareness’ of course, like those ‘brave’ soccer players.
They can donate in private, but you cant make a public statement in private.
That they included the gay references in it was foolish in that it will attract the horde of trolls that cling to this sort of stuff, your trying to pretend you know nothing about the Folau like that is believable. You cant argue they are mistreating workers on religious or cultural grounds as well.
I think its fantastic that you donate to World Vision, good on you. What any of this has to do with Israel Falou cover stories I’m not really sure, but everyone’s entitled to their opinion so feel free to come up with whatever theories you like. The point I would make, however, is that as a donor to World Vision you would understand better than most the incredible difference it would make to a community is these players simply donated 1 round of match payments. 90 minutes of their time for a cause they claim is so important to them. Not that big an ask really is it?
I donate to World Vision does that cover it, my suspicion is that the majority of posters criticising this move by the Socceroos are just using the donation business as a cover story, and donate to Israel Folau legal fund.

Marty get those indigenous players interested in soccer. They have great natural talent and they would make great footballers.

Hopefully you’re not a hypocrite like you say these players are. Here’s your chance to help out- https://action.amnesty.org.au/donate/Justice?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIken446GC-wIVHJpmAh2zZQEMEAAYASAAEgIl2PD_BwE

I think Craig Foster’s approach is a good example. He’s commentating, but his salary will be donated. But for anyone who wants to not be a hypocrite and do what they’re telling others to do – https://action.amnesty.org.au/donate/Justice?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIken446GC-wIVHJpmAh2zZQEMEAAYASAAEgIl2PD_BwE
