"It's only a tennis match": Ash Barty bows out of Wimbledon like a true champion

By The Roar / Editor

After going down to the unseeded Alison Riske in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon, Ash Barty put the shock loss into perspective by saying “it’s only a tennis match” and acknowledged her extraordinary journey to the number one ranking.

While also lamenting missed opportunities, Barty promised to regroup and fight hard to get back into the winner’s circle.

WATCH highlights from Barty’s fourth round loss.

Many of the women do it, that's why I can't watch them (made an exception for Ash). That's great she is gracious and lovely in the press conference. It doesn't change the fact that her grunting was disgraceful - from her first serve she started - I didn't hear one in the warm up? Why is that? Because they are cheating mate. Raffa does it too but normally not until he is well into it and they are possibly grunts of exertion - or maybe he's cheating, too. It should be banned if you ask me

If you think Alison Riske was disgraceful then you didn't watch her press conference. The 2 press conferences of Ash Barty and Alison Riske were the most impressive I've seen recently. Both were honest, warm, unassuming human beings - no blaming umpires, referees, courts, and neither of them threatened a lineswoman or an umpire during the match. If Riske's grunts and squeaks offended you then you need to give up watching the tennis tour. She is a pure amateur screamer compared to many - Sharapova, Azarenka, Joao Sousa, and Rafa Nadal spring to mind.

Quite often they do - we've just been used to an era of Fed, Djoker and Nadal when it doesn't happen much. Sampras quite often went out very early in the French.

Ash Barty is a champion human. However, that's it for me for the women's draw. I don't kn0ow how anyone can stand to watch it with all the grunting and screaming. That lady that beat her was disgraceful.

You must laugh a lot then if you interpret every single phrase uttered without appreciating the context or reference to the behaviours of the speaker. To ol' markus if a cannibal and a vegan both say "I'd love to have you for dinner " you should treat both offers exactly the same.

Has a good team behind her. Trains hard. Tries her utmost to win. Accepts defeat graciously. Concedes her opponent played better. DOESNT: Swear at officials & spectators. Smash racquets. Aim ball at opponents. Say she is fed up with tennis. Ash is a true ambassador for the sport. Nick can you take notes if you possess the capacity to put pen to paper.

Two points. She "tried to win". Plus Bernie has "form" for doing the opposite. When Ash & Bernie's careers are over, I wonder how they will both be remembered.

I do have to laugh at the vitriol that would follow if Bernard Tomic was on record as saying "It's only a tennis match" after bowing out in early rounds to an unseeded opponent.

If you say "Its only a game" or anything similar to that. You're not a real sports fan.
