Judiciary system set for overhaul, but golden point's here to stay

By Ed Jackson / Wire

Coaches seem to hate it but clearly NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg is a fan of the game’s golden-point system.

Greenberg laughed off claims from Canterbury coach Des Hasler that the system was going to be overhauled at the end of the season.

Instead the league’s boss said golden point brought an extra level of excitement to the game which added to the spectacle.

“Des Hasler doesn’t make those decisions. The NRL does,” Greenberg said.

“I’ll listen very closely to Des as I’ll listen very closely to all of the coaches. We’re in the business of entertainment.

“Golden point has provided a number of entertaining finishes to the end of the season. We’ve had more golden point games in 2016 than ever before.”

Greenberg noted changes had already been made for this year’s finals series where a period of extra-time will be played before golden point.

One aspect of the game which is set for review though is the judiciary system.

Greenberg concedes the system creates confusion for fans through inconsistent penalties and gradings and it needs to be looked at.

“I think you will see some change going into 2017 but I’m not sure what (that change) will be,” he said.

“I understand fans get frustrated but it’s no new news to us that they get frustrated because there are difficulties in the system with loading and carry-over points. It’s a complex system.

“Where we can provide simplicity into that, we will, but be mindful that we’re there to protect the players’ interests on the field.”

isn't that the normal league interpretation though?

While you are at it why don't you have a look at the offside interpretation "law" which was highlighted the other night. Remember in SOO 3 when Jennings scored and someone was lurking offside within 10 metres of the ball but to give NSW a chance they gave it a try because he wasn't "actively involved" eg define actively???. Well the other night Cummins ruled a Souths player offside who was nowhere near the ball and disallowed a Souths try after Barba mishandled. Cummins may have got the wrong player but didn't use the bunker to check. He just ruled a Souths player offside. How can this interpretation work if you have to keep check of every player after a kick and getting near the ball. In Union if you are in front you have to stay 10 metres away period and not chase until the kicker puts you onside . Not perfect but saves loads of debate - imagine reefing a junior game with this interpretation???...

The problem isn't necessarily golden point but the refs approach. The first ever golden point game was decided by a penalty goal and the world didn't end. I prefer to call a draw a draw in regular season but understand the commercial imperatives to have it in place - just get the refs on board.

I just had a look at the Wikipedia page on golden point, interesting reading. This year Canberra have played 5 GP games, result is 2-2 with 1 draw, so comp. points would be exactly the same. Warriors have played the most GP games this year, lost 3 won 2, so still outside the 8. Gold Coast has lost 1, won 1 and drawn 1, so same points. Despite these figures I am still a fan, but agree that the refs need to grow some balls

How about 10 mins ET where the a filed goal/penalty goal counts and final score wins at after full time but a Golden Try finishes it. For player welfare, allow the first (or preferred) back on the field. Maybe then if the players are offside trying to rush, the refs can maintain better control knowing a penalty won't end the game. I did consider letting a penalty goal finish it but then we would have the same situation now.

Greenburg comes across as arrogant. I swear the NRL seems to do things completely the opposite of what the majority of fans want - just because they can.

There are currently 15 different grades of a high tackle from Grade 1 Careless to Grade 3 Reckless to Grade 5 Intentonal. Should the injury inflicted also have an impact on the decision?

The golden point refereeing has infected the 80 minutes also , watching the Raiders V Eels the other night , the eels were a mile offside late in the game when trying to come from behind and that seemed to be as a result of it working for the Raiders when they were coming from behind . The NRL is becoming like the old travelling road show with a snake oil salesman and a bearded lady , no integrity and all about taking people's money .

Give it a draw or 10mins of ET. The problem with GP is that the refs don't want to blow a penalty because there will be more scrutiny on how the game was decided by a ref calling a penalty than when they don't.

This mob are so out of touch with everyone else in the game, coaches, players and the all important fans it beggars belief. The MRC is a joke, when you have a judiciary member giving advice to the guilty party it's time for a sacking.

Golden point isn't entertaining. It's an actor that has forgotten his lines.

The NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg might be a fan of the game’s golden-point system but the system is a dud and many fans will be very disappointed by this decision. Golden points achieves nothing and its a disappointment when a weaker side achieves a draw and doesn't have a Cronk to win a game in the usual boring 'field goal' way. This is a very disappointing decision and RL will suffer for it.
