Why Anthony Mundine will (and won’t) beat Danny Green

By John Coomer / Roar Guru

Anthony Mundine (47-7) and Danny Green (35-5) are finally having their rematch on Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, more than ten years after their record-breaking first bout at the Sydney Football Stadium.

That fight was won comprehensively by Anthony Mundine on points (118-112, 118-111, 116-113).

The bookmakers currently have Green as the favourite at $1.42, with Mundine at $2.90. But here’s five reasons why Mundine will also win the rematch.

1. He’s a better boxer, something he proved in the first fight.

2. He claims his movement has been restricted by a hip injury in recent years, but he’s recently had surgery to fix that problem.

3. Age is in his favour, he’s two years younger than Danny Green.

4. Danny Green has only fought twice in the past four years.

5. He loves the big stage, and this will most likely be his last big fight and payday.

On the other hand… here’s five reasons why he won’t.

1. Mundine’s boxing skills and speed have inevitably declined with age.

2. Danny Green could have a weight advantage of up to 8 kilos on the night. Their first fight was fought at super middleweight (76kg), but since then Mundine has fought at lower weights and Green at higher weights. Mundine may come in lower than the 83 kg limit, but Green will likely come in heavier in the 24 hours after the official weigh-in occurs.

3. Green is a heavier puncher and has more chance of scoring a knockout. 28 of his 35 career victories have come via KO, compared to 27 KOs in Mundine’s 47 career victories.

4. After losing the first fight, Green wants this badly and has been waiting years for a chance at redemption.

5. Mundine has lost three of his last six fights.

This one could go either way. Who is your tip and why?

One judge thought so Robert, I thought it was on the cards. The 98-90 score from one of the judges was a joke.

Thanks Machooka, At least they are both past their prime, so in that sense it is an even contest. It would be sad if one was in their prime and the other was past it, as sometimes happens in boxing.

Thanks for the read John... and yes this fight could go either way. For mine this fight is just so boxing... a pair of past their prime boxers, dragged outta retirement for a pay day due to their past history, and the pay per view exclusivity which profits from the polarisation of the so-called combatants and their supporters. Therefore, it's a delicious albeit tasty promotion for those prepared to pay, and thus watch it happen. So I really hope these two combatants do make it happen... and hence paying supporters get some real value for their hard earnt. As to a tip? Well yeah... keep your money in ya pocket fools! :) Nah... seriously though I think Mundine will be too slippery for Green. If Mundine boxes it's going to be difficult for Green to tag him... dare I say just like the first time they went round.

Mundine must be short of cash to take on this stupid fight. Green couldn't land a single blow in the first fight and looked hopelessly outclassed (like Manny Pacquiao did against Mayweather). This time he only has to land one punch against a smaller old man. Generally Greens wins are against old previously good fighters who tend to fall over early in the fight. They look staged.

Always good to see Australian boxing in mainstream media and even better to see a big fight happening at a big stadium. Will be interesting to see how Mundine handles the weight difference Looks like Mundine's sucked you into another pay per view purchase Big J

No doubt Mundine is a smart business man, but going to the extent of boycotting the national anthem just to get another couple of hundred PPV buys is not the way to go about it. Some would say that what he is doing is treason (my self included) and that is not worth any amount of money. I hope Green bashes some respect for his country into him. If not for this country he just be another big mouth that would be killed in the streets for his opinions.

He certainly polarises opinion Big J, but has made a lot of money doing that. I'm sure at least half of the people that buy his pay per views want to see him get beaten.

This definitely could go either way. It will be Mundine on points if he still has the reflexes to avoid any bombs Green will throw and can make it go the distance, otherwise Green by KO.

I can't wait either, once the fight is over you'll stop whinging about it. John, nice article you raise good points on either side. I was going for Mundine but due to his comments regarding the Athem ) I hope green breaks his teeth for him and leaves him embrassed
