Tell us your way-too-early AFL and NRL season 2017 predictions

By Riordan Lee / Editor

Some people think that making predictions about the football season before we’ve been able to have a solid look at all the teams is foolish – those people are cowards.

It’s never too early to start talking about footy, so this week on Roar LIVE we’re going to be making our way-too-early predictions for the upcoming NRL and AFL seasons.

Former Sydney Roosters and Parramatta Eels player and new Roar Expert Jimmy Smith will be joining us to give his premature picks for the NRL, but we want to know how you think the year is going to pan out.

  • Which teams are going to win the competition?
  • Which teams are the dark horses, and which are going to stink?
  • Who are the young guns about to have a breakout season?
  • And who takes home the Dally M/Brownlow?
  • Roar Live will be streamed Wednesday morning on The Roar’s Facebook page and also on the site at 8am (check the homepage). It will also be available as a podcast on Soundcloud and iTunes.

" St Kilda will be very ordinary." Just how ordinary do you think they'll be...? Also, Sloane's a good left-field pick for the Brownlow I reckon.

AFL Which teams are going to win the competition? A team from Sydney •Which teams are the dark horses, and which are going to stink? North Melbourne. They won't be anywhere near as bad as everyone thinks they will be. St Kilda will be very ordinary. •Who are the young guns about to have a breakout season? Tom Cutler for the Lions •And who takes home the Brownlow? Rory Sloane

AFL: Winners - Dogs, again (they'll only get better; I can't believe how many people expect them to slip badly) Dark horses - St Kilda (they have some serious talent with some outstanding veterans) Stinkers - West Coast (no Nic = no good) Breakout - Patrick Cripps (he's already good, but everyone will realise how good this year as he dominates everything) Brownlow - Bontempelli (is there anything he can't do?) NRL: Winners - Storm (just to annoy the establishment off, again) Dark horses - Whichever club Jarryd Hayne switches too mid-season because he's always wanted to play for them Stinkers - the Knights (could their offseason get worse?) Breakout - JT (somehow he'll become god this year) Dally M - JT (if god can't win it, no-one can)

Don’t know a single thing about AFL, so I’ll focus exclusively on the NRL side of things. 1. Parramatta 2. North Queensland 3. Warriors

Canberra is a good call, but you have Warriors and Titans as 2nd and 3rd?? Those are massive calls.

    I'd always prefer a literal $500 to a figurative $500.

Premiers: Giants Dark horse: Fremantle and Essendon Stinks: Dogs Young gun: Nakia Cockatoo Brownie: Fyfe I don't usually follow the crowd with my picks, but I feel that these picks are all well thought through. That said I do feel that 2017 is the going to be one of the most even seasons in decades.

You obviously weren't here a week or two back. Josh Elliot has them as favourites for the flag and wrote virtually a whole article about it, including the Sam Mitchell situation.

Massive, but I am not going to be putting my hardearnedon, so thought it would be worth a shout. I am always weary of surprise packets, and they were a change up from the norm. Often you will see teams lift against the reigning premiers, will see what they can do.
