Time for the Warriors to put on their big-boy pants

By Jeremy Brown / Roar Pro

I tried selling my Warriors jersey on-line, without luck. So I re-listed it with the ‘caution, flammable material’ label on the outside. It sold within minutes.

Okay, so that’s not true. I haven’t quite got there yet, but that day must be soon approaching.

The Warriors jersey has become such a symbol of pain and humiliation, the club would do well to explore other marketing opportunities, like branded arse-less chaps and dominatrix apparel. The team has certainly been spanked often enough, and fans might even qualify for frequent crier miles.

That said, I am so tired of the same old rubbish being spouted about the team: the players can’t catch, can’t pass, can’t tackle and are dumb or lazy.

I get it, I’m a fan too, you’re upset, I’m upset, we’re all upset. But seriously?

Rugby league is a demanding sport played by enormous lumps of men who have no right to be so skilful or to play at such speed.

The NRL is the greatest league competition in the world and only the best make the grade. Players make significant sacrifices before, during and after their careers are finished.

The collisions are huge. Yet they keep getting up, after every hit-up and every tackle. This is what we love about it, the gladiatorial contest. The battles within the battle.

And they play on battered and bruised, set after set. Game after game. Season after season – if their bodies hold together.

They diet and train relentlessly to ensure they remain in peak physical condition (maybe with the exceptions of Mark ‘Piggy’ Riddell or big George Rose).

To suggest the players suddenly forget how to perform the basics is ridiculous, despite Roger Tuivasa-Sheck appearing to have a potential post-league career in directing traffic.

It can’t be the players. Sure, they have to take some responsibility, but too many have held illustrious careers either before or after their time at the Warriors.

Remember Ngani Laumape? Playing in the Hurricanes midfield, he might be an All Black this year and has scored almost as many tries as some of the Australian franchises. He’s been sensational.

Chad Townsend, the much-maligned Warriors half with all the pace of a turning frigate, now has a championship with the Sharks. Townsend directs them superbly alongside James Maloney – another ex-Warrior.

Even Konrad Hurrell posted a picture of himself eating steamed chicken and vegetables, looking remarkably slimmer than his Warriors days. Who didn’t see that coming?

Konrad Hurrell is back to his best at the Gold Coast Titans (Supplied)

There are so many examples.

So what is going wrong? The players themselves don’t seem to be able to pinpoint it. And Stephen Kearney sounds like he’s in a permanent state of shock, every loss adding another “um”, “uh” and “not sure” to his post-match comments.

Despite the worthless pre-season assurances provided by owner Eric Watson and Jim Doyle, the Warriors always have been, and continue to be, an amateurish organisation operating in a professional environment.

In many ways it is an extension of the same problems that handicap the NZRL, except the NZRL doesn’t have Watson’s chequebook.

If the Warriors really want to play in the big league, they need to put on their big-boy pants and make some big-boy decisions. Because currently, it just isn’t working.

It’s time to clean house, starting at the top – maybe with the guy who decided to cut Ivan Cleary. That was enough for John Hart to walk too. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but we’ve basically been mud since Cleary left.

In some ways, I feel for Kearney, but he must have known the risk of inheriting rugby league’s poisoned chalice.

And it’s not completely foreign territory for him, having coached Paramatta to one of their worst ever seasons – although the Eels aren’t without their own problems, and it could be a bit tough on Kearney considering it is still just his first year in charge.

[latest_videos_strip category=”rugby-league” name=”League”]

But I’d feel a lot more sympathetic to Kearney if the team showed even a glimpse of pride, improvement or determination.

Right now they look like old rockers who continued touring well past their use by date, going through the motions for diminishing crowds, with only the most loyal of fans remaining to watch the slowest car crash in history. It’s been 22 years and I still don’t know if we’ve hit the wall.

I’ve never heard Warriors fans so despondent. Sure we’ve been here before, but never boasting a line up with such quality in key positions. And that’s what hurts the most.

If the club doesn’t sort it soon, they might find themselves dreaming of the days when the fans cared enough to complain, cared enough to burn their jerseys, or question the players’ pride.

The days the fans cared enough to watch them play.

Jeremy I know that in 2011 the Warriors went on this fabulous run that ended in a grand final appearence. I was in NZ at the time as the Rugby WC was on and it appeared to me...and the rest of NZ...that the Warriors somehow got sucked up in all the hype around the WC and performed better than they would have if the WC was not happening. If i remember they finished 6-8th that year and performed above expectation to make the GF. I know people say this is BS but I was there and I did witness the hype given the team due to the excitement of what was happening in the country at the time

Good write up. They should be higher up with the team they have. Clearly something isn't right. But the main reason I'm commenting on this is the title makes me think about Will Ferrell screaming about putting his Big Boy pants on! And I just want to share it because its hilarious! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgi3HS0uczk

The Titans culture isn't anything to write home about, when you look at what happened to Dave Taylor (who put on a few kgs when he was there) and his mates, its reflective of the Gold Coast as a whole, blokes go there to live a 24/7 holiday, and I can't see the Titans winning a premiership anytime soon. Mind you, my team the Tigers is probably on par with both the Warriors and the Titans in terms of poor club culture - look at Adam Blair when he was there.

I sincerely hope you are right. And I agree, their line speed was better, Foran seemed to be straightening up the attack and they were able to stay in the grind. There were encouraging signs. But with Mannering out they seem to have lost composure. The loss to Penrith and lacklustre performance the next week is a concern for fans who have seen it before. Improvement during the origin period won't provide much comfort as that still follows the same tired pattern. Only winning at season end when it counts will restore the faith for many. In the past 5-6 years they haven't managed that. let's hope it's different this year - but if not, surely it's time to reassess?

I'm not suggesting Cleary was the answer to all the problems, but under his guidance the team made a GF and at least had a chance. Since his departure they have barely fired a shot and failed to make the finals for 6 years. Just feels like they might have been a bit premature. Especially considering the time and opportunity they subsequently provided other unproven coaches, like Cappy.

Has Hurrell actually been any better for the Titans? Not from what I've seen. His weight wasn't so much the issue at Warriors, rather his hands and ability to adhere to a defensive pattern.

Overall, Cleary's record was not markedly better than any of their other coaches. Had they been bundled out early in that finals series as history suggested they would, he'd just be another sad footnote in the Warriors Wikipedia page.

They went on a dream run from 6th to make that final - and were pushing to make the 8 at all without some handy end of season wins. I'm not sure Cleary was the messiah some people think. He did get sacked by his very next club and I don't foresee spectacular results with the Tigers either.

Yeah there is 9 teams either 2 points ahead or equal/behind but it is only the Warriors who should go

Steel do you remember that first game? I remember extremely well how the Bronco's scored the winning try with (I think) Willie Carne stepping on the sideline in the leadup to the try and the touch judge looking straight at his foot on the line then makes no call. They won by 3 points . Its certainly been similar ever since

Someone please remind me what Cleary won again...I seem to have forgotten him or the Warriors winning anything when he was there.

Thanks for that insight, Stu. I have always looked at the Warriors poor performances from a fitness and stamina perspective as some not very good players can achieve more if only they could rise to the occasion. Many a time I see a team performing strongly one minute and then gone walk-about the next. They certainly need some big boys and I hope they are successful in their recruitment.

I'm still not convinced the Warriors challenges stem purely from recruiting. For whatever reason, it appears to me that a number of quality players simply don't perform in the Warriors environment and I think the club needs to look very closely at why. But love the passion Stu.
