Richmond Tigers vs Carlton Blues: AFL live scores, blog

By Tim Miller / Editor

A record crowd looks set to descend on the MCG as the AFL home-and-away season launches with the traditional battle between the Richmond Tigers and the Carlton Blues. Join The Roar for live scores, coverage and analysis from 7.25pm (AEDT).

A drought-breaking premiership, a Brownlow Medal, a Norm Smith Medal, a Leigh Matthews Trophy and the immediate demise of decades-old jokes about their club. Yep, 2017 wasn’t half bad for Richmond.

First defying the doubters to finish third on the ladder come finals time, then embarking on a September to remember by crushing three quality opponents in Geelong, GWS and Adelaide, it was a stunning season for the Tigers, and one the yellow and black faithful will remember for a long time to come.

Leading it all was Dustin Martin, the oft-controversial midfielder enjoying arguably the most prolific single season in AFL history, winning nearly every award in the business and securing one of the more lucrative contracts going around.

But the Tigers’ strength isn’t in one man: from the high-octane forward pressure of Jason Castagna and Dan Butler to the dogged defending of Dylan Grimes and David Astbury, Hardwick’s men are full of team players all doing their bit.

Their depth will be tested early in the year, with injured trio Bachar Houli, Daniel Rioli and Dion Prestia joining the suspended Nathan Broad on the sidelines, but Tigers fans should still be very optimistic about their chances of going all the way again in 2018.

The Carlton Blues might have gone slightly backwards from 2016, their first year under coach Brendon Bolton, but despite finishing 16th with only six wins for the season, there is still plenty to like about the direction the young side is heading in.

With bookends Charlie Curnow and Jacob Weitering tracking nicely, defender Liam Jones coming from nowhere to become a decent footballer and a bunch of up-and-comers in Sam Petrevski-Seton, Zac Fisher and Jack Silvagni all impressing as well, the signs are there that the Blues will soon be challenging for finals.

New recruits Aaron Mullett (North Melbourne), Jarrod Garlett (Gold Coast) and Matthew Kennedy (GWS), plus highly touted No.3 draft pick Paddy Dow, should all add some skill and spark to the line-up, and while they’ll be up against it to win here, don’t be surprised to see the Navy Blues cause some upsets this season.

Prediction
In terms of development, Richmond are Formula One drivers while the Blues are still on their L plates. The Blues will try hard, but the Tigers should be too good here.

Richmond by 38 points.

The AFL expects the attendance for this match to exceed 90,000, which would be the highest ever for a Round 1 game and the most at a non-Anzac day or finals fixture since 2000.

Will the huge crowd see the mother of all upsets as the Blues give the Tigers’ flag defence a shaky start? Or will the yellow and black army unfurl their flag in peace on their way to a comfortable win?

Tune into The Roar’s live blog of this AFL season opener, and don’t forget to leave us your thoughts in the comments section below.

Great effort by the Blues. Richmond experience showed in the last quarter. Great game to watch for the opener of the season. Good signs for Carlton moving forward and might have been a different story without the loss of Kennedy and Kreuzer. Go Blues

I think what tonight showed is that we are no easy beats, and puts teams on notice that they will have to fight hard to win

Delicious - eh, what you can say, he's great to watch. Honestly I screwed up, I saw him a few times last year and he looked all gangly and terrible, he was obviously still getting used to his body. I'll double down and say he's gonna be better than a similar player in Hipwood I reckon over the next few years

I am pleased for matty wright. I always rated him as a forward that knew where the goals were and he got squeezed out of the powerful crows forward line. Macca you must be happy with him since he joined the blues

Yeah the Tigers were a little too strong in key moments but you can see the blues are making great progress.

Carlton look bottom 4 for sure. Carlton's fast start and accuracy flattered them. Richmond will be top 6 for sure.

PREDICTIVE BROWNLOW TIME! Carlton- K. Simpson, one vote. Awesome down back, racking up possessions at will and distributing cleanly. Teams will have to lock down on him now, because he's too damaging to let roam free. Carlton- P. Cripps, two votes. One word- Herculean. 36 touches in midfield, 25 of them contested, and with Bryce Gibbs at Adelaide now, he more than picked up the slack. Also showed off his marking prowess with a couple of big overhead clunks. Richmond- D. Martin, three votes. The difference tonight. It's not just about the touches he gets, it's about what he does with them. His kicking is always dangerous, and he makes the opposition panic whenever he gets the ball. 32 touches and a goal, and probably another 3 votes for Charlie.

I also thought Lamb had a good game as well, especially in the first 3 quarters.

The Richmond Tigers have unfurled their flag in style- though not without plenty of scares- with a 26-point victory over a plucky, but ultimately outgunned, Carlton Blues, in front of a record crowd of 90,151.. If you looked at the scoreboard and nothing, else, you'd assume the Tigers should have won this game by more. 71 inside 50s and 36 scoring shots, many of their misses gettable, compared to 47 and 20 for the Blues. But that's why it always pays to watch a game rather than read about it afterwards. The first ten minutes were to Carlton in 2017 like chalk is to cheese; the yellow and black faithful stunned as the Blues slammed through five goals in less than half a quarter. Too fierce at the coalface, too slick on the outside, and armed with a plethora of dangerous forwards led by the irrepressible Charlie Curnow, an upset looked on the cards. From there on, though, this was always Richmond's game to lose, the Tigers steadying after that opening onslaught to slowly wrest the match back on their terms. A run of four straight goals was broken by Jarrod Garlett late in that first term, but it seemed like the premiers, and their famous tackling pressure and intensity, had finally rocked up. The Blues managed to keep their noses in front for much of the second, and keep the Tigers contained when they looked like breaking clear in the third, but with every minute the dam wall showed a bit more strain, the Blues' gallant defence a bit closer to cracking. Keeping it at bay was the first glimpse of a rule that's sure to rear its head again this year; six times the Tigers were pinged for encroaching on the 10-metre imaginary circle around the marker, and paid the ultimate price on four of those occasions. But despite the best efforts of Kade Simpson, who with 35 touches at a remarkable efficiency continues to give Father Time the bird, the cork finally popped in the last, a string of Tiger goals putting the result beyond doubt. Once again, it was Dustin Martin leading the way for Richmond, the tattooed marvel stepping up every time the Tigers were challenged with a brazen gallop forward, a one-on-one win to set up a teammate, or a scrappy win at the coalface. 32 touches and one goal doesn't read as anything remarkable by his exceptionally lofty standards, but without him the Tigers would have lost. Almost as good were a pair of other regular stars in Jack Riewoldt (four goals) and Alex Rance, an immovable object in defence. But contributions from lesser lights were just as critical, four goals from Jacob Townsend, three from Dan Butler, and three and 19 touches from a free-roaming Josh Caddy, showed that the Tigers don't just have one drummer at their disposal. For the Blues, five goals apiece to Matthew Wright and Charlie Curnow led the way up forward, but their newfound attacking style had a consequence: the miserly stinginess of the Blues in 2016 and 2017 took a hit, the Tigers scoring almost at will late in the game. Robbing Peter to pay Paul is an old cliche, but feels appropriate here.

Pretty happy with that effort especially with Kennedy missing for most of the game and Kreuzer battling injury, Fisher SPS and C Curnow and of course Cripps was fantastic - if they play like that for the next 3 week she I think they will be 3-1 after 4. 1 more goal would have beeñ nice so I can stop hearing about how long it has been since we kicked one hundred points

Pretty decent contest with Carlton's efficiency keeping them in for most of the match. Great to see footy's back.
