Wests Tigers vs Brisbane Broncos: NRL live scores, blog

By Tom English / Roar Guru

The Wests Tigers will hope to continue their unbeaten run to start the season, while the Brisbane Broncos will look to register their second straight win. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog, starting from 8:05pm (AEDT).

The Tigers can be said to have been lucky in the first two rounds of the season, as can the Broncos last week, racking up their first win of the season against the Cowboys 24-20.

Brisbane came off second best against the Dragons in round one, losing 34-12, while the Tigers have defeated two of the title favourites, in the Roosters and Storm 10-8.

In team news, Jack Bird is expected to make his debut for Brisbane. He is one of three changes, with Jaydn Su’A joining the bench, Jordan Kahu leaving the side with a broken jaw and Tom Opacic moving to starting centre.

For the Tigers, Tuimoala Lolohea isn’t yet back from injury, thus Corey Thompson and David Nofoaluma retain their spots, while, in the forwards, Elijah Taylor is ruled out with Matt Eisenhuth in at lock.

Keep an eye on the goal kicking, which has largely impacted the teams so far. The Wests Tigers have kicked 12 of their 20 points over the first couple of rounds, and the Broncos got home last week against the Cowboys, due mostly to good kicking.

Prediction: Brisbane by 8.

Steveng. You won’t get an arguement from me about why those shouldn’t be try’s but the fact is that’s been called a try for the last 20 years. The ball was on the ground and his fingers scraped it in a downward motion. I’ve seen far less convincing put downs green lit. Before you go telling people off for clutching at straws maybe stop bringing up two decisions that went against the Rabbitohs in a year old game where they missed the 8 by 4 wins.

'RM' Bird knocked that ball forward! and on, he never ever constituted 'downward pressure' for his action to be ruled a try! Its amazing how fans are so delusional when a 'slow-mo' replay doesn't show the true nature and reality of the play and they are clutching at straws! Since the inception of RL that would have been a 'NO TRY', get over it and stop clutching at straws that it was a try, it wasn't!

Hahaha yeah I had the exact same thought when I saw Buzz's tweet. Great game? What game was he watching? It was as dire a display of terrible footy from two teams as you could ever wish to avoid seeing.

Fair enough I suppose. In the end I’m happy to say the officials didn’t have a great night, but you know who had a worse night? The two sides playing. Shocking game from both sides. I think I’m with The Barry on this one. Both sides deserved to lose this one. Something I found pretty funny was Buzz’s criticisms on how bad the game was, then after the penalty tweeted “How to ruin a great game - that’ll do me.” In need of some material for the Monday column I guess.

I've no problems with the penalties as long as they are consistent. Teams will eventually adjust and they'll be less penalties. However, the ruling that decided the game was farcical, as the W-T player was square while the Broncos person playing the ball wasn't square. The W-T player not square didn't get involved in the play so what was the penalty for? Does this mean that every time a tackler is left on the ground when a ball is played that there should be a penalty? I'm confused.

Nah, not a 98-2 decision at all. Last week, Thompson got his fingertips to the ball when it was on the ground in the ingoal to force a drop out and save a try against the Storm. This week, Bird got his fingertips to the ball when it was on the ground in the ingoal and it's not a try. Why is it different for a defender and an attacker? I don't think it was a bad decision to call it a no try for Bird by any means - just that it was a 50-50 that went the Tigers' way. Put it this way, if the onfield refs had called try for Bird, do you think the Bunker would have overturned it? Further, earlier in the game Sims got called for not square at marker, where the Tigers' player could have been just as easily pinged for moving off the spot to play the ball. It was as much a 50-50 as the one that went the Broncos way in Golden Point, for exactly the same offence. There were other calls that went the Tigers' way during the night, and other calls that went the Broncos way. I'm not saying the refs did a good job last night. I think they were pretty poor to be honest - but the game was not rigged as so many are saying. If the Broncos had lost in the same circumstances, I'd be unhappy. I'd be saying the refs had a poor game all night. But I wouldn't be claiming some vast conspiracy against my team. (only the first bit of that reply is directed at you, WDD. The rest is just a rambling response to some of the more extreme commentary I've been seeing online about the game)

If the referees are allowed any more freedom (to run the NRL) they will kill NRL off (if they haven't killed it already) who wants to go to a RL game to watch the referees run and decide games? I thought that the NRL was a sport where we were supposed to watch players play RL? Because, all we are doing in 2018 is watching referees run and ruin this wonderful game! If this game was a way to fairly end a game, I'll give the NRL up! No team deserves to lose a game this way and in golden points, ‘they should end a drawn game with a 'DRAW'!!! GP’s should be scrapped and never ever be implemented again in the NRL! This was a disgraceful way to end a game and the NRL have allot of problems!

You absolutely can not see his hand still touching the ball. You can see his entire palm (the lighter part at the end of the much darker arm) is not touching the ball and it is too pixelated to have any idea what his fingers are doing, but I do know it's to pretty hard to hold a ball with fingers and no palm, so It's more likely he's got it away by that point. No part of his body clearly touching the ball in this shot. The foot looks it might be on the line but it;s still not even close to being conclusive because it's too pixelated to tell if his foot is even on the ground. There's a little dark line between the touch line and what we're assuming is his foot which could be anything, part of his boot, green grass inside the line, shadow of the boot above the line. An HD image might show us but this does not. Irrelevant anyway since the ball would need to be in his hand for it to matter and we can't tell that either. I'm not saying he got it away before he went into touch, I'm just saying this picture is not even close to proof that he did not so I think I'll go with the touch judge on this one...

Ask the refs. They are the one's who enforce them sometimes and NOT others. The refs ignored plenty of other penalties that could have been given to either side egs: Off side, playing the ball off the mark, others not being square at marker,etc..,but suddenly enforce the rules when it suits them. The refs decided this game.

Never said I had a look into their mind. They are just selective on what they do and don't ignore.I think it's because they are truly hopeless.

No team here is at fault for a ref's poor decision resulting in a bad ending to the game.

Isaako wsa very good and will develop into an excellent player. Lots of takes under pressure and then slotted goals under pressure. Milf used to be very good a couple of years ago with the drop goal. I remember him doing a drop goal even when it wasn't needed late in the game a few times. Don't know whats happened since.

Yes I heard that too while watching and the footage was showing the touchie running down the line so I assumed it was him but maybe it was somebody else. If it was the officials then there is definitely something wrong with the game.

Yet the Bennett didn’t. You start giving that crap as a try then the game is lost. Where are we heading with this? “ my hair scraped the ball.......TRY”. I guess your perspective is dependent on if it was your team scoring that kind of try or not. Personally I am glad it was a no try, and sanity prevailed.

The first two showed what a joke the refs are. The second, you can still see his hand is still touching the ball, and his foot on the line.Touch judges known to miss important calls.

They were robbed. The photos don't lie,and the refs ignored plenty of opportunities to give penalties for and against both teams during golden point, but suddenly chose to give a penalty then.Poor refereeing.I would say the same,if it had happened to Brisbane.

Two points on the Tigers attack, inside the opposition half it was all single runners, no one trailing the forwards for an off load, I suspect this will change with the addition of Josh Reynolds. Second point is no Tedesco, Corey Thompson was not sighted in attack, where Tedesco was regularly running into the backline. One other thing noticed was Brooks played the first runner everytime, a number of times during the game good second man options were present and Brooks played the first runner who just got smashed. Defence is good, need some greater variation in attack, more runners, more options.

No, that was the point. The decision was so obvious that even a biased commentary couldn't disagree with it. Rabbits, Gould, Johns and Fittler collectively definitely produce a Sydney flavoured call for ch 9 which is largely undiluted by the token contribution of hairhat Lockyer. Agree it was dog of a game but suspect the outrage is inflated as it was the Cinderella Tigers rather than the Broncos that were "robbed".
