Who is your NRL team's MVP (Part 2)?

By Jay Ross / Roar Guru

The most valuable player can be defined in a number of ways and the criteria can differ between teams, depending on their style of play.

It could be the goal-kicker who converts from the sideline every week, the organiser, the most experienced, the best cover defender or the guy with electric pace. They make the clutch plays look easy week after week.

So who is the MVP of your team?

Wests Tigers – Luke Brooks
When he first hit the top grade, he was compared to the Immortal Andrew Johns. This hasn’t eventuated yet, but he’s now starting to live up to this potential.

His speed in attack and confidence to run the ball is matched only by his accurate kicking game. Along with Benji Marshall, he’s got the Tigers purring in 2018.

Newcastle Knights – Kayln Ponga
This 20-year-old is a freak and there’s nothing about his play that pongs. He can do everything and is destined to become a superstar of the NRL, injury permitting.

Ponga just beats Mitchell Pearce as MVP as he has shown that he can comfortably handle the pressure of controlling and winning games in Pearce’s absence.

Pearce has experience, a dynamic passing game and a great long kicking game – but Ponga shines with the step, speed and foresight to turn a game on its head from anywhere on the field.

Parramatta Eels – Clinton Gutherson
Just back from injury, Gutherson is the heart and soul of the Parra team, with an energy that is infectious and a skill level that suits almost any position on the field. He’s a natural football player who loves to be in thick of the action with a mantra that ‘anything is possible’. In fact, his acceleration is only matched by his positive attitude.

Sydney Roosters – Latrell Mitchell
When the Roosters aren’t travelling well in attack, they often swing it along the line to Mitchell in search of a touch of individual brilliance. Even though he often doesn’t receive the ball in great positions, he’s been able to show his class and strength to make something out of nothing.

He’s the Roosters MVP because in the last 20 minutes of each game, he seems to get the ball a couple of times in each attacking set. In defence he never takes a backward step and shows bucketloads of heart and passion. He’s also the goal-kicker and mega dropout-kicker, which adds to his value in the side.

Cronulla Sharks – Andrew Fifita
Last year the MVP for the Sharks was probably James Maloney – in his absence, I’m going to shine on Fifita due to his devastating ability to crash through tackles and inspire his teammates when the game is in the balance.

He scored the late try to seal the Sharks grand final victory in 2016 – in 2018 he’s still the go-to man when the Sharks need an extra effort or a try close to the line.

Not far behind is the ageless Luke Lewis, who never stops trying.

Gold Coast Titans – Ash Taylor
The Titans haven’t had a huge amount of success over the years, but if I were forced to pick the most valuable player I’d vouch for halfback Ash Taylor, just ahead of the determined Kevin Proctor and Ryan James.

Taylor is being talked up as a future Queensland representative and has shown maturity beyond his age since coming into first grade. He has speed off the mark, a highly effective passing game and can worry fullbacks with his high kicks.

Manly Sea Eagles – Tom Trbojevic
Tom is a dynamic young footballer and is the man you need when the going gets tough. He is a great support player – his teammates and the crowd get excited when he has the ball in hand. Not far behind him is his courageous brother Jake.

Daly Cherry-Evans deserves a mention with his crisp passing and kicking game, but Trbojevic consistently offers the x-factor over the 80 minutes. He regularly injects himself into the attack to inspire and create opportunities.

Canterbury Bulldogs – Moses Mbye
Before the season began, you’d probably point to Kieran Foran as the MVP, but he’s been underwhelming and may be playing with injury. In his place, the speedy Mbye offers spark from the back and a great counter-punch when fielding kicks from fullback.

He’s one of the few players firing for the Dogs in 2018.

Jay, so you have changed your general criteria now in part 2 for team MVP nominations, rather than the "pull the game out of the fire" type. In this case now I would nominate the following people as their team's MVP: Dragons (Hunt) Panthers (Maloney) Warriors (Luke) Storm (Smith) Tigers (Benji) Knights (Ponga) Bunnies (Sam B) Roosters (Teddy) Sharks (Fifita) Broncos (McCullough) Raiders (Whitehead) Titans (Taylor) Sea Eagles (Jake T) Dogs (Klemmer) Cows ( JT) Eels (Nathan Brown)

Hello Jay, Agree with Brooks, Ponga, Mitchell, Fifita and Gutherson. Titans. Whatever chance Titans have starts with Jai Arrow. Ashley is brilliant but brittle. Manly. Apisai Koroisau for mine. Productivity plus. Tom is terrific on occasions, when fit. Canterbury. Josh Jackson. You get two for the price of one. An automatic MVP pick. You may note that the above trio are forwards. IMHO when the yards get harder it is usually a forward who will rally best and for that reason lay claim to being ranked as MVP..

Tigers MVP is Russell Packer. His leadership and mongrel is sorely missed. Our middle is not even near as strong when hes out of the team.

I have a very different take on Mitchell at Easts than you do, Jay. In recent times, many have compared him to Inglis, but he goes MIA way too much throughout games for my liking. I'm also not a great fan of his in defence, one -on - one. The MVP for the Roosters for at least the past 2 years has been Keary, but he needs to step out of the shadows of Cronk.

While Brooks has stepped up further in the last 2 weeks I'd give my MVP to Benji so far. Along with his bombs and attacking direction some of the reads in D he has made since rnd 1 have shown his years of experience. Mitchell, IMO, similar to Jet yesterday for the Broncos, hard to give MVP on flashes of brilliance. That said, the easy option would say Cronk but Keary is the one who sparks, supports and finishes that play. That kick for Mitchell last week, he backs up the play, gets the ball in heavy traffic puts a kick in deep enough to get past Fergo and sits up perfectly for the try. Nice to watch.

What ever the true value, in 4yrs time it may be a bargain.

Thank for your comments BA Sports - I think you're right about Mitchell if you're talking 2017, but this year he seems to have more of a fire in the belly and tries to inject himself more during the games.

Thanks for commenting Barry - yes it's not easy to select an MVP for the Bulldogs. You'd hope it would be a player from the spine, but they're not performing.

Gutherson has won 8 of his last 10 (11 of his last 15) games. In the same period the Eels won 13 of 23 games (16 of 28) games. There is a clear correlation between success for Parramatta and Gutherson. I question your comments around Mitchell. Not saying he is or isn't their most valuable player, but where you praise him i am most critical. He disappears late in games and that is his biggest problem. - Possibly to do with fitness or concentration

As as long suffering Knights fan, I am deadset so happy with Ponga at the moment I'll be tempted to cheer for him in Origin.

I place Jake above Tommy T but I always seem to have a love for the worker more than the flashy type

That was my thought reading this (regarding Mbye). He started the year very strong. But I think teams are being more thoughtful in the way they kick to him now and he needs to find different ways to inject himself into games.

At the time it was reported as $3 million or $3.6 million for four years, but the Knights of course denied that it was that high. In any case, I recall at the time a lot of commentators thought it was far too high as Ponga was only 18 years old (and untested) at the time. I reckon it will turn out to be a bargain.

Ponga might be the most important player in the comp. Manly have played the Knights twice and he was the difference in both games. From the tropics to the coal fields , that's the salary cap working its magic. I don't know what he's on but he must be the best value player at the moment as well.

I’m not sure on Mbye. He started the season very well but hasn’t been the same since he got knocked out against Souths. He’s been pretty poor over the past couple of seasons, so I don’t think three good games makes him the MVP. He hasn’t sparked much lately. I’d have to go for Klemmer as MVP which probably says a lot about why the Dogs are where they are.
