Boyd quits rep footy after Origin axing

By News / Wire

Brisbane captain Darius Boyd has declared he’s done with representative footy and will not make himself available for a State of Origin recall.

A fortnight after Queensland coach Kevin Walters overlooked him based on form for the first time since his 2008 debut, the veteran NRL fullback pulled the plug to join retired Maroons Johnathan Thurston, Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk.

Boyd cited a desire to focus on the Broncos and allow younger players to get their turn in the Origin arena as contributing factors to his decision.

“My time’s done in rep footy,” Boyd told News Corp Australia.

“I’ve had a great career. I have nothing to be disappointed about. I’m really happy with everything I’ve achieved in the rep arena.

“I don’t think I have anything more to prove. It’s time for the younger fellas coming in. They have great players, really quality guys coming through.”

A sluggish start to the season with the Broncos and the remnants of an earlier hamstring injury cost Boyd a Queensland call-up.

There was speculation Billy Slater’s withdrawal from game one through injury might spur a recall and Walters revealed this month the door was still open.

“We just don’t think Darius is quite at the level he knows he should be,” Walters said.

“Certainly if Darius can get back up to the player he has been for Queensland, he will get back into this side.”

Nah we don't want them both. But with Bob Bennett being a Kumuls coach a few years back, there just might be a link ?

Morris was absolute quality, another very underrated player and deceptively quick. Even now he is quicker than most wingers.

Well done to Boyd. There has been a bit of talk about Boyd being gifted his results in Origin on this page. Boyd still had to finish, no matter if people think he was fed class A ball every time from only 15m out. He often had blue bodies wrapped around him or in front of him before the line. Sure, I recall him getting across the line untouched. But what else can you ask of a winger picked to finish off the work of a stunning back line? Boyd did all that was required of him and did it without fuss, whatever position he played in the rep games. I don't care what anyone says, I really think he is suffering a serious injury this year that has been carried on from the back of last year. Once I have seen him put the foot down this season (and I haven't seen all games, to be sure). I have only seen one clean break. I commend him for staying on the paddock and guiding the team around. No doubt he and coach and possibly the Broncos board have discussed this. But Walters is right to have not picked him for origin without seeing the acceleration Walters knows Boyd is capable of when fit. Enjoy the remaining time with the Broncs, Darius and I hope you get on with getting fit. Thanks for the memories.

I recall Morris brother in the centres who always seemed to keep Inglis quiet when marking him. He seemed to be the only guy this decade who could regularly shut down Inglis.

BA Sports, so let me get this right, Gasnier was crippled every time he was against Boyd and the Morris boys are slow. OK, thanks for clearing that up. It helps explain why NSW could never beat Qld. It would have helped if they hadn't picked crippled players and cart horses. Perhaps you could nominate all the super speedy wingers who were faster than the Morris boys in their prime. It's just that I can't remember them being run down (getting old, memories slipping). I can remember Brett running down Jennings, but he is really slow so that doesn't count. I'm sure Boyd marking up against Hayne must have been easy too. I mean, Hayne was such a crap player that he only won MOM once or twice, journeyman that he is. He just finished off backline moves? Of course Boyd never played first or second receiver and it was all down to Inglis, Slater and Morgan. Morgan wasn't even in the team until 2015, eight years after Boyd started. It still doesn't explain how he was scoring tries and making assists at the Broncos, Dragons and Knights though. Maybe he was getting coaching from Slater, Cronk, Thurston and then Morgan. Lucky b*stard. IN SOO he has played fullback 4 times and centre once. He has scored the winning try on four occasions and he has scored two tries on four occasions. Very lucky, he should buy a lottery ticket. He is so lucky, he even has a Dally M fullback of the year and Clive Churchill award and two NRL premierships. It just shows you how good Slater, Thurston, Cronk and Morgan are. They weren't even in those teams and they helped lucky 'Boyd' win those too.

Darius Boyd's retirement from rep footy ? Looks like a massive dummy-spit to me.

Yeah, I think with Hunt and Munster not being super creative, it has to come from number 1, and that is either Slater on the sweep if he's fit, OR Ponga doing whatever in the midfield. Morgan was safe, but he isn't going to get us many points from there.

Selective memories. C'mon guys. His first two tries in Origin were his two longest runs for tries - 22m - both untouched, both off the back of long Inglis line breaks. The rest of his tries were 10m or less. He didn't just benefit from having Inglis inside him, he benefited from having Slater and his quick hands, he benefited from Morgan throwing nice passes, he benefited from Thurston and Cronk's kicking game. With all due respect to them, he also played many of his games against two honest toilers in the Morris brothers - not the fastest wingers to represent. He played 16 of his 23 games on the wing and scored 16 of his 17 tries there. Wingers don't create over laps. The players inside them do. As for defence - yeah i remember a couple of shots on a crippled Mark Gasnier, but other than that, role through the nSW tries over the last decade - granted there aren't that many, but a good chunk came down Boyd's side. He is a good player who did his job and who got really lucky to play on the end of the greatest backline ever.

A stellar career and could easily see him in the Hall of Fame one day, overshadowed by some of the greatest the game has seen. Craig, if that's the best you got, what he has achieved in the game far outweighs "YOUR" measly complains. Cheers Boyed for those great moments of the game.

Boyd is one of the biggest sooks in the game. His crabbing across field, his soft ambles back, his constant complaining every time he gets tackled. On average he plays the ball slower than any other player in the game. A sign of the absolute selfishness of the man. He’s the best example of a winger who should’ve stayed a winger.

To be fair to Munster, I don’t think Boyd touched him either.

Absolutely. He might have played most of his time putside Inglis and that means he had plenty of opportunities to stuff it up. How many times do you recall seeing him fluff his lines? I can't think of one time. Regarding Boyd's defence and jamming in on the centre, I remember specifically Game 1 2011 when Willie Tonga busted his shoulder early in the game and he played on. There was a great deal of talk about the courage Tonga showed to play on but less talk about how good a defensive cover job Boyd did on Gasnier. There was an absolute ripper of a tackle he layed on Gasnier at one point in that game; put him right on his back. Well done to him on a great representative career.

Considering current form, hamstring, Bronco's season to date, QLD depth in the backline and the changing of the guard, I think this was the best choice moving forward for all involved. He has had quite a representative career. It's a bit of a shame he didn't reach that "30 origin" milestone, only 2 go in that department.

Putting milford on after the game was essentially lost did the man a disservice. Especially given that they were clearly failing to create space. I think you have to have a positive plan to use the bench.

Being dropped with a perception of (kinda, sorta) being hard done by is probably his best option. He said that he had considered retiring after the hamstring. If it allows him to focus, then maybe he can look at trying to secure his legacy by playing as best he can and getting his team as far as he can. It's more dignified than holding on to hope and coming across as deluded. The hope has to eat away at you, distract you and add an additional level of pressure. There are still victories that he can work towards..

Good call Pomoz. His defensive reads were very underrated too. A number of times Qld was short down the left and he would rush up and jam in on the centre, wrapping them up and preventing the pass to the open player. I wasn't thrilled with his initial call-up to the Qld side in 2008, but he proved me wrong. He's done an outstanding job for his state. Well done Darius.

Sorry Geoff, but the amount of times Boyd created the overlap and scored without Inglis or created the overlap and put a winger through, speaks volumes of his skill. His ball playing and reading of the game is what sets him apart from other wingers. How did the Qld wingers go in the last game with Inglis there? Plenty of tries scored off of Inglis? And what about the try assists at the Knights and Broncos? Is that down to Jack Reed? Or who else do you have in mind?
