Gould again slams 'embarrassing' Griffin

By Murray Wenzel / Wire

Phil Gould has doubled down on his justification for dumping Penrith coach Anthony Griffin in a stern reply to the sacked mentor’s own criticism of the Penrith supremo.

Griffin was given his marching orders on Monday, with Gould indicating he had lost the players’ faith, was too controlling and was not the man to deliver a premiership to the club.

The coach responded on Fox Sports’ NRL 360 on Wednesday, publicly questioning Gould’s patience and own results during his time at the club.

And, in a swipe that infuriated Gould, Griffin indicated Gould was a control freak who craved being at the helm when Penrith next won the competition.

In response, Gould teed off on the Nine Network’s Footy Show on Thursday night claiming Penrith “wouldn’t have won a premiership the way he was coaching”, despite them sitting fifth one month out from the finals.

“He’s got us nowhere near a premiership at the moment,” Gould said.

“My first thoughts … were that he shouldn’t have done it (the interview). I don’t think he’s done himself any favours.

“He’s hurt a lot of people in that interview and embarrassed himself in front of people that know the truth.”

Gould said he had twice asked the club to hold off firing Griffin this season following damning internal reviews.

He claimed interim coach Cameron Ciraldo had twice asked to resign, only for Gould to talk him out of it.

Penrith are hopeful of luring Ivan Cleary back to the club that sacked him three years ago, although Cleary still has two seasons to run on his Wests Tigers coaching contract.

Amid accusations of unethical behaviour from Tigers chair Marina Go, Gould said Penrith had never suggested Cleary break his contract and return for the 2019 season.

Boy its a tough one really, as we all dont know all the facts - just what we are being told ! I dont think either Gould or Griffin should be airing their dirty laundry, it's not a good look. If nothing else comes if this, it would be great if blabber mouth self proclaimed expert of "I told you so" Gould - might just shut his ever flapping mouth more than its open !

I am a Union follower n just watching n reading from afar. I have no opinion of either gentlemen involved, but it seems odd that a coach gets sacked when he is getting the results, the team is in contention to make the playoffs n yet nobody appears happy. The expectations must be extremely high n the men at the top are incredibly demanding . Money doesn't appear to be an issue , trying to poach other coaches is normal , fallout in the media from both parties only adds to the nastiness, the boss tells the dismissed coach to take the money n go on a holiday n basically keep his mouth shut.... and I thought Rugby Australia was a mess.

Ray Warren is the worst commentator i've ever heard won't listen to him at all go Foxtel ,and as for Hadley he needs to keep his big mouth shut all the time, all those commentators are the same all alot of brown tongues.

I think Gould started this process not only with the sacking but also the comments about Griffin. Often sackings are left at "we appreciate all that the coach has done for the team and we feel it's time to go in a different direction". By sacking him four weeks from the finals and sitting in fifth place (unprecedented) Gould had to give justification and in doing so bagged Griffin. Griffin felt his reputation was tarnished and wasn't prepared to take what he saw as untruths lying down. Whether it was wise or not remains to be seen. He certainly didn't come out swinging, but did call Gould out on some of the things he said. Over the course of a 30-40 minute interview he was quite balanced.

I lost respect for Gould (along with Warren and Hadley) ages ago. In one way, it'll be great if/when Channel Nine loses the broadcast rights.

All Griffin had to do was keep his mouth shut and say "the jobs in the past, I'm looking for new opportunities." Why would he want to take on a man with as much power in the NRL universe as you say? Gould defended Griffin at the beginning of the week then had no alternative but to respond after Griffin's interview on Fox. The happiest people throughout this episode are the many Gould haters. Wouldn't matter what Gould does, haters are gonna hate.

These are your lies ? They're running 4th,so you think thats enough to get them into the GF above the Rabbits,Rooster or Storm ?...theyre absolutely miles away based on performance..last week against the Raiders, you didnt watch it did you..the week before against manly..the 50 the Broncos put on them..thats no lie..thats where they are.. Gould runs the day to day affairs..true...Chairman O'neill and the board make the final decisions and believed to be handling the talk with Ivan..cant be construed as a lie..no evidence to disprove that.. the mid season review..go back to the archives and check what was said at the time..no lie. The tunnel obviously denied to protect Griffin..what realistically would have happened to the coach had Gould admitted it.. Dont like his character...join the queue..but he also needs to do his job and give the club every chance of winning the premiership..why he ever extended him last year I'll never know..

Lol - for what? Saying he didn’t get along with other coaches?! He didn’t. He had a former NRL Player and guy who has worked tirelessly to make it as an NRL coach try to quit the place he has worked for 6 or 7 years. TWICE!

We know Gus is lying because he has said a number of completely self contradictory things - they can't all be the truth. Griffin may also be lying. But if he is, his lies are consistent for the moment - so it's fair to give him the benefit of the doubt. But regardless of what the truth of the situation and events at Panthers may be, firing the coach 4 weeks out from the finals when he's taken the team to equal fourth on points, and then assassinating his character in the press is pretty hard to justify.

"We are nowhere near a premiership". vs 4 wins from a GF. "The last 5 weeks Griffin has been solely in charge and they've been terrible" vs Record WLLWW - better than the Dragons, and losses only to top 8 sides. "We have someone in mind to coach - we'll know in a couple of days" vs "No offer has been made to Cleary" "I run the club" vs "I didn't make decision to sack Griffin - the board made me do it" "The mid-season review wasn't about Griffin" vs "The mid-season review confirmed that Griffin wasn't working" "There was no blow up in the tunnel" vs reality.

Spot on Jeannine. Most disappointing from Fittler. I expect better of the NSW coach. He might like to have a look back at his own public response to being sacked as Roosters coach with a much poorer record than Griffin's at the Panthers.

I think it's more that people expect Griffin to throw a tantrum because he was fired so there is a tendency to forgive his actions. On the flip side Gould gets to land on his feet and then throw Griffin's reputation under the bus. Gould is a man who has immense power and say in the NRL universe and it comes across as nasty. Essentially, he used his Channel 9 forum to basically ruin Griffin's career. That's where the problem lies. Griffin has no inherent power in the NRL and his comments regarding Gould will not stick, but Gould's comments will.

It certainly does go both ways. The whole situation stinks. But Gould is holding all the cards at the moment and still decided to stick the boot in.
