Hannah Mouncey withdraws from AFLW draft

By News / Wire

Transgender footballer Hannah Mouncey appears to have given up her AFLW dream after deciding not to nominate for the draft.

The 28-year-old revealed her decision to drop out of next month’s draft was due to a self-reporting blood test regime, dating back to 2015, taking an “enormous” toll.

“There are a number of things I can’t risk by continuing this fight, which are far more important than football,” she wrote online on Sunday night.

“The toll this has taken on the people I care about is enormous, as has the toll it’s taken on me.

“I’m not ok with allowing that to continue.”

In the scathing Twitter post, Mouncey accused officials of blocking her pursuit to become the first transgender AFLW player.

“Essentially, the toll of doing this on my own has ended up being far too great,” she said.

“The AFL has treated me like s***, with every effort made to wear me down to a point where I couldn’t continue.

Mouncey was prevented from entering last year’s AFLW draft on “strength, stamina or physique” grounds.

But allowed to lace up her boots for VFLW side the Darebin Falcons this season.

“I’m comfortable in the fact that given the chance, I would have done well at the next level,” she said, citing finishing as Darebin’s second-leading goal kicker.

“I know I can do it, but it’s not worth what it’s currently costing.”

Under the AFL’s new gender diversity policy, trans or non-binary athletes needed to submit medical records to show testosterone levels stayed at or below 5 nmol/L for 24 months along with a range of other athletic data.

Along with the statement, the former Australian men’s handball player released the relevant documents in a bid to prove her eligibility.

“The reason is to show the reality of where I sit, to show that this is not because I don’t meet these (sic) requirements,” she said.

“To do otherwise, I would have risked constant speculation about that, and possibly being labelled a cheat … which is not something I can live with.”

Nominations for the October 23 AFLW draft opened last Monday and close this Friday.

What size limit do you suggest they ban female players from playing against your daughter. I am a former dual international male athlete and Sports Hall of Fame Athlete pre transitioned weight 100 plus kg. Post transitioned I am 57 kg, not all trans girls are big, fast and strong.

Transgender women competing in women’s AFL is not a new conversation there have been many trans players since 2009 when transman Wil Glover became the transman and transgender AFL Player at any level in Australia. The AFL developed and introduced its first trans policy in 2010 this policy was based on the same criteria as the IOC 2003 Stockholm Consensus Guidelines being gender confirmation surgery, two years post operative before first competing in the women’s competition, also legal gender markers were required to be amended to female for a transitioned XY female and male for a transitioned XX Male. Currently there are approximately 45 trans AFL players playing the game in Nsw and Victoria. Transitioned woman Verna Leigh has represented at State Level for Nsw. In Australia we have had trans women compete at State Level in Rugby Union, Rugby League and Hockey. The first IOC policy was introduced prior to Athens in 2004 since this time in the 4 summer and winter games not one single Olympic Medal has been won by a trans athlete not even a single bronze. The IOC as a hip response to lesson liability in the divisional court in Toronto Canada during the historic human rights victory of Kristen Worley in challenge to the UCI, IOC and WADA transgender policies. The current policy of 10nmols at least 12 months before competing in the women’s competition, gender surgery was no longer a prerequisite to compete and official gender markers no longer need amending but transitioning athletes must commit to competing as their new gender for at least 4 years. This policy had nothing to do with inclusion the IOC simply followed suit with the IAAF 10nmols Policy for women with a DSD condition. This was the first policy that forced athletes to reduce their endogenous testosterone levels as a prerequisite to compete. The controversy around trans athletes has intensified since this 2016 IOC policy change. As a former dual international male athlete and transitioned XY female AFL and and soccer player it took me many many years to minimise the advantage I gained by experiencing a male puberty and living many years with a male endocrine also being an elite athlete from a very young age added many years onto the time it took me to feminisation. Th current IAAF 5nmols Policy for females with a DSD Condition is being challenged in CAS by South Africa Athletics. I am in global discussions with the legal team and other experts in this field I am extremely confident the IAAF Policy will be overturned as firstly it is a human rights breach and also the IAAF study on improved performance with female athletes with increased testosterone levels is flawed. The AFL Policy being the first Policy globally to force transitioning and transitioned females to maintain under 5nmols has been developed without science and research, there is precedent in the Divisional Court in Toronto that at 10nmols it is a human rights breach at 5 nmols I am extremely confident will be overturned.

Hannah transitioned as an adult after a long and successful sporting career training and playing at an international level as a male, and a big one at that. I don't want her crashing a pack with my daughter in it. Pretty simple, find another (non contact or individual) sport or play in the male comp, and don't cry victim.

Is transgenderism a mental illness, there are studies out which claim it is and of course others that claim it is not, personally i don't really know. This is out of left field and i have no idea if it is on track or not, but studies have claimed that sperm count is down dramatically over the last 30 years, there is a link between testosterone and sperm count that comes from the brain, if the brain is not interested or slower in producing the link, it stands to reason that you may feel more feminine. I have heard theories about estrogen in the water supply from the pill and plastics all have estrogen in them not to mention hormones in meat and dairy have all contributed to sperm reduction. Maybe just maybe this transgenderism is a kickback from the way we live and is partly due to our environment.

I was fortunate to get some very good advice from chatting with Matt Hall who lives up here in QLD now. He was the one who copped all the hysteria and paved the way for others

Paul, I'm grateful that we live in a time where an individual with HIV can still play contact sports and talk openly about their HIV diagnosis without fear of persecution, but I suspect that wouldn't have been the case back in the 80s and 90s, and perhaps fighting for this right back then might not have been worth the cost to your well being, as Mouncey has decided for her fight. I feel that 'timing' is the greatest barrier for Mouncey. We're only just starting the shift of our understanding of gender from binary to complex, and like history has proven, we usually stuff these kinds of things up in the early days. Unfortunately, by the time we truly get our heads around gender and manage to adjust all facets of society accordingly, it might well be past Hannah's prime football time. Hopefully by then she'll uneventfully transition into Masters like you and I :)

I reckon we should be able to tell whether the 'safety' concern is legitimate by now, seeing as she's played two seasons in the Canberra and Victoria competitions. I also think female AFL players would likely be insulted that everyone is worried about big, bad Mouncey hurting them - they're not slow flakes.

Here it is. Roar has a lot of AFL content these days, so a lot of stuff gets pushed down quite quickly, some stuff may only hang around for 36 hours before getting pushed off the main page. https://www.theroar.com.au/2018/09/07/afl-shortens-aflw-season-despite-increased-number-of-teams/

I saw this story a few days ago and I must admit I didn’t like her reaction. if she really wanted to play football she’d just do the regime, accept she’s always going to be different to most of the people around her (most of the people she’d be playing against weren’t born with a penis, for starters) and just suck it up I will say on a smaller scale to hers, and certainly less public, I do have some experience with a regime – I have HIV and had to take a blood test at the start of me playing masters and will have to at the start of each season to prove that the virus is at undetectable levels in my blood, and therefore untransmissible to anyone – now, the chances of me actually getting a blood injury playing masters footy is pretty small to begin with, and then my blood somehow making it’s way into another player’s bloodstream is almost impossible to conceive – and as I said, with the medication they issue you can’t even transmit the virus to someone anyway – but hey, that’s the rules I really wanted to play footy, and if doing a blood test each year and handing over results is what I need to do to be allowed to play footy then you do the regime because it means a lot to me. Now admittedly I don’t visibly look different to everyone else, but at the same time I do have something in my head that I don’t go round broadcasting to all and sundry. That’s life though. This persecution complex she’s running around with is not helpful for her mental state – at the end of the day she’s someone who changed genders, she will always be different to the women around her and she’s clearly delusional if she ever thinks the big wide world is going to look at her and treat her the same as every other woman walking around.

Hey Roar, where's our article on the conference system announced for the AFLW? Thought about doing one myself but not knowledgeable enough to offer valuable insights. Someone needs to get on that.

Not about failing the tests and also more complex than "not interested in putting in the effort" but she's not prepared to elaborate yet. The Outer Sanctum crew spoke about the policy on their latest podcast when they interviewed an expert on transgender health - it's enlightening stuff if you want more info.

In general i think the whole transgender, non binary, 57 different genders etc etc is based on well heeled, bored, first world people who have spent to much time at Uni and have yet to make it out into the real world. These people now seem to be in charge of the Labour party now and wouldn't know a working class Australian if they fell over one, the group of people that they once professed to represent.

I liken it to the Seinfeld episode where Kramer dominates the little kids at the Karate school. Apologies for the flippancy, but it is what it is.

The picture illustrates the real issue. The AFL set the comp up to encourage young girls to participate, which isn't helped by great hulking transgender people running around. The fact that such a simple truth daren't be told is emblematic of a many of the sticks we've set up to beat ourselves with. The AFL wasn't allowed to be honest, and wasted a lot of poor Hannah's time in the process. Allowing Mouncey to play in the WVFL was a weird half-measure that was doomed to end up pleasing nobody.

One way to fix this is scrap AFLW and just have one comp which can include transgenders, women, non binarys men etc etc. Then we can all be equal!!!, if you are good enough you will get a game.

FWIU Hannah refused to have a blood test - i stand corrected though. The whole thing IMO is just crazy, Hannah has male appendages is 190 cm and 90 kilos. I really wonder if the average AFLW or even female playing suburban footy is actually really upset about this.

I don't understand what's happening here. The AFL's gender diversity policy has only just been released. Is Hannah saying that it has become too stringent? Does she think she will fail it? Or is she saying that it's too much effort to comply and is not interested in putting in the effort?
