Hate speech laws are designed to safeguard protected groups. If the player is not gay, its not clear that they can claim offence or humiliation without claiming that being LGBT is intrinsically shameful.

The picture illustrates the real issue. The AFL set the comp up to encourage young girls to participate, which isn’t helped by great hulking transgender people running around.
The fact that such a simple truth daren’t be told is emblematic of a many of the sticks we’ve set up to beat ourselves with.
