Mitch McGovern is a different deal to Bryce Gibbs

By Michael Thompson / Roar Guru

Mitch McGovern’s manager Colin Young has officially announced that his client Mitch McGovern has chosen the Carlton Football Club as his destination in this upcoming trade period.

Adelaide supporters are already crying out for pick 1, some are crying out for us to turn pick 24 and 25 into a pick inside the first round.

McGovern is not worth a first round pick, he is worth a second round and a player at best only. Most likely Carlton will sign Sturt forward Shane McAdams, and send him to Adelaide along with pick 24 or 25 to Adelaide for McGovern so that he can complete his move over to the Blues.

Crows fans believe McGovern is in the same situation as Bryce Gibbs, but there is a difference. While Gibbs wanted to move home to South Australia, he had no complaints about Carlton and was willing to play on there when he didn’t get his wish.

McGovern flat out wants to leave South Australia, and make Carlton his home. So take pick 1 out of the equation, take the chance of converting pick 24 and 25 into a late first round pick – McGovern is worth less than what the Crows and their supporters believe he is worth.

If Adelaide fail to facilitate this trade, McGovern could be a similar case to that of former GWS forward Cam McCarthy who re-signed a new deal before opting to ask the Giants for a trade back to Western Australia in 2015, only to have GWS refuse.

McCarthy then graciously decided to sit out of the 2016 season, heading home to play local footy in Western Australia before the Giants finally facilitated a trade with Fremantle, and McCarthy got his wish.

Adelaide have already had a season to forget, with captain Taylor Walker targeting and telling former Crows turn Demons defender Jake Lever to stay home last year from the best and fairest, to the pre-season camp from hell and the lacklustre season which saw Adelaide go from Grand Finalists in 2017 to not even making the finals in 2018.

The last thing Adelaide need is to keep McGovern on their list and then become a McCarthy situation – Adelaide should let McGovern and whoever else wants to leave go from the Crows to start fresh at a new club.

This will be one of the most talked about trades until it is done along with what should be a massive trade period ahead over the next few weeks.

Carlton don't need McGovern I don't think they'll take him at all cost, they'll do a deal if they can, I think if the deal is unreasonable they'll have to pass.

Spot on otherwise the crows hierarchy may find their members are fed up paying up memberships to the wish wash traders they are. They hold the cards this time and with Fogarty in the wings no need to play Mitch in the A team but back in the sanfl.

Hi Pedro - in my organisation facy is short for facility - my bad, it was inferred in the article that some of our boys including McGovern have been individually training for awhile, your boys should certainly be doing that! However Pedro you didnt answer my question, did you read the article or you may have seen the news last night on the Crows position - the Crows are pretty adamant on this one, as we keep saying and regardless of all the Carlton comments here, you will pay the amount asked or not and we keep him, which I think the Crows would be happy with as well. Realistically we like him that much that Tex didn't even have a go at him on the news last night.

Tell me where M.McGovern finished in the Adelaide best and fairest the last 3 years?___ Always outside the top 10.___ Pick 11-13 is his real value = 2 average second round picks and throw in a mature age selection and its more than enough.___ B.Gibbs has finished 4th in the club B&F 3 years straight.

Macca, I think both clubs will be keen to get a deal for McGovern done early as they both have other deals they will want to do.

Col just saw a rumour that the McGovern deal will be an early second round pick plus S McAdam. Apparently we will know by the end of the week if we get Shiel.

Maybe it should be said that he is training at the Crows facy given our long lay off like you boys. Still not sure how that equates to hating the club. It was at afl.com suggest you read the article.

Nobody is training with the Crows at the moment - everyone is on the enforced leave period (most are overseas holidaying). Perhaps don't believe everything that you read (or maybe check the date of the article)!

I think the reason you claim to not have heard of him is because, like many victorians cant see anything outside of your own bubble called melbourne!

Might want to read afl.com the Crows confirmed they rate him highly and contrary to the authors comments he is still training with the Crows - that doesn't read dislike in my opinion. Face it Carlton if you want him you will pay the crows price doesn't really get any simplier.

Gibbs isn’t a “star”. If he was, he’d have won the gold jacket this year. Just because he’s the best Carlton player doesn’t mean he’s more than average anywhere else

Carlton fans are so hypocritical. McGovern is 5+ years younger. You want him, you pay the same overs the Crows did. There is zero difference.

Anyone else out there loathe the draft system? We talk about players being loyal to clubs yet they offer players around like they are street whores. Bring back the old system which seemed to work pretty well for 100 years. And do people still believe American models for capitalism actually do much good? They seem to be going to hell in a handbasket the way they are going and we want to follow them?

As a Carlton supporter I have to be honest here, I have never heard of this McGovern character. If Crows want a first round pick in exchange then sorry no deal and CFC would be fools (yet again) in making a poor trade. We need 'A Grade' talent, not B graders. We already have a pile of them. If these deals are because of pressure on the CFC staff to make something happen because of the poor couple of seasons we have had then the recruiters and coaches at Carlton need to be moved along. Never heard of McGovern, so he ain't a top talent and therefore not worth much.

Carlton needs midfield depth, so after they have traded that in, 'the McGovern deal' will be done and Adelaide will get what they are offered by Carlton, can't see Carlton paying overs for him.

No way he is worth a Top 10 pick. At best he is an early second round pick, and I would think hard before I gave that up!

McGovern is worth a top ten pick, not 23. Take a flying leap Carlton if that is what you think. Trade out one of your gems for pick 4, throw in pick 23, then Crows will talk. Otherwise no deal.
