AFL Trades Wrap Day 7: Dayne Beams, Dylan Shiel, Rory Lobb and more

By Josh / Expert

There wasn’t much movement on Monday and with just two days now remaining in the 2018 AFL trade period, plenty is left to be done.

Two of the biggest names on the agenda at the moment are Dayne Beams and Dylan Shiel and while neither found a new home today, there was talk about both.

Beams, it has become clear, does want to come back to Victoria and play for Collingwood, though his manager has said he’ll happily stay out his contract if Brisbane don’t get a good enough offer.

Today it was reported that Collingwood have made their initial offer and that is pick 18 and their future 2019 second-round pick in exchange for Beams. The Lions are said to have knocked the offer back.

It’s difficult to see a deal being done here, if Beams’ willingness to stay with the Lions is genuine. He is simply worth significantly more to them than Collingwood can afford to pay.

The Magpies’ position is hampered further by the fact that they’ll need to match bids for both Isaac Quaynor and Will Kelly in this year’s draft.

Pick 18 likely would have already been earmarked for matching a bid for Quaynor, expected to come in the teens, and if they trade it away they may be forced to go into deficit.

Collingwood’s next pick in the order isn’t until No.51.

As for Dylan Shiel, it has been reported that GWS are asking Essendon for their first round picks this year and next, a price which so far Essendon are unwilling to pay.

The Dons hold pick 9 in this year’s draft and given GWS’ abundant salary cap issues, could approach negotiations with a level of confidence that the Giants need this deal to get done more than they do.

Shiel was not the only Giant to attract an offer on Monday with talk that Fremantle have offered up pick 11 to secure Rory Lobb from GWS, but want some currency coming back the other way.

The Dockers reportedly want to secure Lobb and a quality draft pick in return for pick 11. The Giants currently hold picks 14, 25 and 43 as their first three selections in the draft.

Perhaps the other interesting tidbit of Monday were some comments made by Port Adelaide’s Jason Cripps on radio, warning Gold Coast that if they draft young South Australian stars, the Power will pursue them.

“If Lukosius and Rankine end up going to Gold Coast … we’re probably pretty happy to try to get them back in a few years’ time,” said Cripps.

“It’s interesting because then it just becomes a two-horse race between us and the Crows, as opposed to a Victorian kid that wants to come back home whose potentially got ten options.”

Gold Coast currently hold picks 2 and 3 in this year’s draft and have been heavily linked to Jack Lukosius at pick 2, and could look to pair him with Izak Rankine or Conor Rozee at pick 3.

Of course, one of Gold Coast’s chief concerns with any potential recruit to the club will be their willingness to commit to the club longterm, given the Suns’ noted retention issues so far in their history.

That Port Adelaide – and Adelaide too, presumably – would already have an eye towards poaching these players back from the Suns does not come as a surprise even remotely. That they would admit to as much before they even drafted perhaps does.

Only one trade deal was ultimately finalised on Monday – Sam Lloyd moving from the Richmond Tigers to the Western Bulldogs, in exchange for pick 64.

It was also reported on Monday that Gold Coast are on the verge of acquiring former Fremantle player Sam Collins through the last of their three mature-age access signings.

Collins was delisted by the Dockers at the end of 2017, but returned to Victoria and had an outstanding season in the VFL this year playing for Werribee.

My comments on Dusty were always based upon his performances to that point iint in time. He WAS overrated before he turned his performances around. He had an atrocious disposal efficiency which was well below other top midfielders - that's a fact. But across the past two seasons, he has turned that around - good on him - and now deserves every accolade that comes his way. I'm actually quite aware of Richmonds list and its strengths and weaknesses more than I am ok many clubs.

Yep - e.g. Biggs and Roberts. Most flag sides, including the Hawks 3-peat, include some average players. Richmond I reckon have more than most.

Why? Neale is essential. We look like keeping him. You are obviously not a Freo fan. He doesn't serve the other clubs.

would rather the young tall cats asked for last week - developing into a foil/replacement for the hawk - a reasonable swap of a proven talent for a potentail talent

Way unders for Neale. Hogan is a sure thing if he didn't have a crook foot. Gumbleton was a top player. It was only injury that stopped him. 'Due diligence' is diligence that is due.

Pick 11? He only kicked 11 goals all season and only 17 the year before. He is a stopgap player...not a key forward and certainly not a ruckman. Why would Freo want a ruckman? We have 6 and 2 of them are up there with the best in the comp.

Collingwood made that offer expecting it to be knocked back. They only did it in courtesy to Beams. There's no way they want to do that deal.

Why not? Sandilands only plays 2 games a year so he would give some extra coverage to rotate through the ruck and the forward line is woeful so wouldn't be hard to get a game there.

Why would he not be best 22 ? Lobb for Pick 11 and GWS pick 35 that they should get from Hawthorn for Scully. Pick 35 instead of pick 53 seems more reasonable for Scully with his angle concerns. Still a win for Hawthorn.

Two round 1 picks will be offered no doubt (they are the very end of the round) but Collingwood will want a pick coming back with Beams. Brisbane have Picks 32, 41, 44, 55. Collingwood have 18, 51, 56, 57. Expect the typical pick swaps in this type of a deal that will have to be hashed out.

Geelong don't want pick 20 and 22 from West Coast for T.Kelly and understandably so. Pick 20 and West Coast 2019 Round 1 Pick instead is a fair deal for both clubs. I think the deal gets done, Geelong is not messing around and West Coast would get a proven talent. With these type of deals expect add-ons something like West Coast get Pick 50 from Geelong and Geelong get Pick 61 from West Coast.

That'd be a fantastic move. Very good defender who's probably underrated because no-one watches GC.

Someone has had a bit of fun on Wikipedia. At the moment Steven May 'plays for the Western Bulldogs'. May seems to have become one of the forgotten stories, and one does wonder if he will still be at Gold Coast next year...

But you have absolutely no idea about Richmond or its players. Do you remember Dustin Martin's brownlow year? The year when he broke the record for most Brownlow votes and most Best on Grounds? Because I can still remember you saying he was an overrated-hack who is not a top 10 midfielder in the competition.

I cannot see the Pies offering next year’s first round with this year’s pick 18 for a 29 yo who has had injury concerns. If the current offer is not accepted by the Lions then I think there is no deal

I disagree. Not many of them are good. There system is good, with everyone buying in. Their team defence is good. But as individuals, there's still quite a few very average players in Richmond's best 22. Not many blokes in their side that I'd want. Dusty, Jack, Alex and Cotch would be handy though! Nankervis, Caddy, Vlastuin and Edwards would be useful. Most of the rest are overrated purely because they played in a flag and played well when everything was on their terms.

'it would be a feather in my cap' (peter bell). This guy is the laughing stock of the AFL trade period - what a little incompetent egomaniac. Fremantle don't deserve Hogan, between a clown like Bell and Ross Lyon who would want to go there.

It will be one of those pick swap puzzles for sure.........GWS get Pick 11, 23, 30..........FREM get Pick 14, 25 + Lobb.

SA based teams are simply sending a message. Vic clubs have been doing this forever. Oh boy, do we have to go thru another 10 years of this before the administrators sort out the system?
