VOTE: Wallabies DIY player ratings vs All Blacks - Bledisloe 3

By The Roar / Editor

The Wallabies have been swept in the Bledisloe Cup, with the All Blacks charging away to a 37-20 victory in Yokohama.

While the final margin was 17, it could have been bigger had Israel Folau not scored a consolation try in the 75th minute of action.

The Wallabies shot themselves in the foot time and time again with mistakes aplenty throughout the course of the contest, but the All Blacks were a class above again as Beauden Barrett led the way with a try and a number of goals.

When Sefa Naivalu scored just before halftime, the Wallabies seemed to have a chance of pulling off an upset, but it didn’t come to be in the end as the All Blacks skipped away, aided in the final quarter of an hour after Tolu Latu was sent to the sin bin.

You’re free to rate players as you like with one being the lowest and ten being the highest – or toss an NA on any player not worth rating – but if you’re looking for a bit more detail than that, our handy little guide might help you make your judgments…

1. Had he not played, the team would have been better off. Negatively affected the performance of the side. May God have mercy on his soul.
2. Anonymous. Was he even there?
3. Did some things that you expect a player to be able to do, but did a whole bunch of other things that sucked.
4. Was passable in patches, but not up to standard in a squad of such depth.
5. Performed his role without anything really noticeable happening.
6. Good.
7. Pretty good, actually.
8. Very good.
9. Excellent.
10. Might as well have been John Eales.

Hannigan and Hooper are a bit light/small, the coach has forwards camp in the backs rather than graft up the middle and join the backs dynamically a'la Read. Beale has been mucked about no end by a coach that thinks all backs are utilities rather than specialists. I would have had him at fullback his whole career, now I think his form has tapered off through this lack of coaching. Even as a Kiwi it's really disappointing to see the way he is playing as his brilliance earlier in career has been stifled, as has Genia's. Cheika is a terrible coach at national level and should have been sacked a long long time ago. Even if the Wallabies pull off a miracle and win the World cup is 45% win loss and a ranking of 7+ really acceptable?

Agree fully re Hannigan, actually made metres and fronted up for what were extended periods of defence - much improved performance and the Read try was much more Genias lapse considering the pressure the tight 5 were under in the scrum. Genia looks like he doesn't give a shot a at the moment. SBW on the wrong side of thirty and his hands are letting him down unfortunately.

at least he got over the advantage line a couple of times - I thought that was new territory for the man (also not his fault he gets picked - and out of position)

I've never played rugby - grew up in WA, where you only play it if you're at the poshest schools - but its my favourite sport. Some things i don't maybe get, that you guys who have played can tell me: Why am i wrong? They don't have enough runners breaking the lines among the forwards, at least compared to Ireland or SA earlier this year (let alone NZ) shouldn't they move Folau up to maybe 11 or something to compensate for this? I guess he'd be playing the role Kurindrani was before (?) I get why you want him at full back, but he's just not getting the ball enough back there. And would it make sense to move Beale back to fullback again? i think he needs a bit more space to be creative. Why am I wrong?

Agree Doc but he's the best available lineout capable 6ish - that Cheika is likely to pick (since Higgenbotham doesn't exist). Not saying it is a good option. Cottrell is a real tough 6 but apparently not Mr Lineout. Dempsey is the great white hope but that was his first test back. No point talking about Higgenbotham and perhaps no point wondering if Caleb Timu could settle in if given a chance. Saying that I am not clear on what Timu's lineout work is like. Tui is unavailable but really when he returns he should take a lock spot off someone - or push hard for it. He may have better hands than Rodda but I remember that Coleman used to drop a few too. Simmons looked good out there. The same not enough physicality but he did everything to test standard and most importantly looked smart. Simmons doesn't beat anyone up but he doesn't get beat up either and does everything else well. Frankly I think we need his smarts. We don't have the luxury of enough guys who are both smart and physical.

Be nice KiwiH. Most would agree that Hanigan is not up to test level. He usually does okay in the lineouts but he doesn't have enough impact otherwise. I just want to be careful to not rubbish him as such. He is trying, he is certainly getting better as you'd expect from a young forward but he's got a long way to go and he'll likely never quite get there. In the Read run through though I think Hanigan did okay. Our scrum was under a lot of pressure all day and a few years ago the Wallaby back row would have done that meerkat thing and conceded the pushover try. Hanigan could have done better but I think Genia needed to buy him the time. No point covering Barrett or wide if Read is going up the middle. Genia seems to be playing like someone who doesn't want to get hurt. A Gordon or Phipps would have done better on D.

Re Sonny Bill - For Beaudin Bs try, SB ran the line that drew the entire WB back row toward midfield which left the space on the blind for R Ioane to run into. Defensive coaches fear him for what he can do that no other inside center in the game can do, off load with three tacklers on him. He did it a world cup final. One of SBs jobs is to attract defenders to create space for others, he just has to be on the field and run the right lines to do that. He played ok. He's not at his best but he's returning from injury. I'm sure he'll improve. When he's at his best there is no one like him in the game.

The two statements: "He is the worst 6 I’ve ever seen at international level, totally ineffectual." and "it was his best game in a wallabies Jersey" are not necessarily mutually exclusive. ;)

Thor needs to work hard - he is a lazy player. So I was very good. Genia needs to be a lot better and have a crack at sniping. Latu is a liability to the team

You mean the Barrett try after he had been replaced by Dempsey? You certainly are a hard marker.

And yet the fox commentators say it was his best game in a wallabies Jersey, not sure they were watching the same game as the rest of us

Some excellent points made LB. Why Beale has not been benched is a mystery and Gordon deserves at least 10 mins on the field. All Hanigan lacks is bulk up top. He should ask Pocock what he has been taking and feed himself up! The wallabies revived my hopes for EOYT. PS Sonny Bill was ordinary; he should get the chop for Goodhue and Crotty.

I’ve played the game and as a flanker. I’ve also watched a lot of rugby, and no the difference between a quality player and a guy well out of his depth. His tackles are ineffective, he got smashed at the rucks, and was completely done for Read’s try. I’d take a Squire, Kaino, Collins over him any day. He looks about 10kg too light and a bit of a wimp to me.

> Hanigan isn’t world beating but did nothing wrong tonight. Nothing wrong is not good enough though is it? You have to be doing plenty right to cut it at this level, not just 'nothing wrong'.

Simmons had his best game in years. Genia missed a very bad head on tackle that led to Barretts try and for those who look closely he is now wary of contact. Beale to the bench as his defence and sideways running can no longer be tolerated. Both run on wingers brilliant while Hooper, Pocock and the vast majority of the side played well. Folou could be the answer to 12 but his pass under pressure gave the ABs 7 points. This brings me to a point I have made over & over; LATU cannot, will not or cannot throw the ball past 2 in a line out straight - this also cost us 7 points while GREY and his methods of defence would not be tolerated by any Rugby Nation. The ABs worked out our blindside winger from a scrum in D would drift to the centre of the field and so we were short in set play for Barretts try. The defence line improved last night but on many occasions we were short on the open side. The sooner we try GORDON at 9 the sooner we will improve; he will run the ball and is not shy of contact.

Well another loss. Of course it was expected. We play dumb. Genia needs to shut up in the press and do this job. Simmo was a highlight.

You’re joking mate. Pocock has to work over time to cover Hanigan and Hooper. Hanigan’s tackling is ineffective and he was completely done by both Read’s try and the try where Barrett switched and set Ioane off down the blind. If you’re happy with him in Ws, you can keep him.
