Canberra have reportedly been fined $150,000 by the ACT government for planning to hold a home NRL match in Wagga next year.
The Canberra Times reports the Raiders planned the match on May 4 to give regional fans a chance to see a game, but the Territory government say the plan breaches a deal to play all matches in the capital.
NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro was furious about the decision, especially given his state has committed $4 million towards the Raiders’ new $19 million base at Braddon.
“The ACT isn’t an island. The Raiders are the NRL team for thousands of fans in Southern NSW. Many of the Raiders’ greatest players are sons of regional NSW,” Barilaro told the newspaper.
“Stars like Junee’s Laurie Daley or Queanbeyan’s Terry Campese and Ricky Stuart are titans of the game.
“If this is how the ACT government is going to treat the Raiders and their fans, then maybe it’s time to start thinking about bringing the Raiders back to Seiffert Oval and the investment it would take to make that happen.”

I am pretty sure the $4 million from NSW will soothe their $150K loss? The ACT Government at it's most petty and pathetic!

Beattie is ex politician - not a politician for life but that's the NRLs fault for choosing him. Bob Carr never read a book at a game - Kennett said there was no point inviting him because he would read a book so you are incorrect.

Raiders players aren't automatically available for NSW but bizarrely ACT players who have never lived in NSW are available in STATE OF ORIGIN for NSW. No wonder people laugh....

Ants pants, At least most PSers would spell DELUSIONAL correctly - on what do you base your assertions - The PS usually operates on evidence - you on the other hand - The Raiders have been find for breaking a contract - the NRL has an issue with all contracts it appears.!!

What happened to the days when Labor, RL and the working class were all under the same roof? What happened to the days when we called ourselves proud lefties simply because we believed in a fair days pay for a fair days work? Labor has given us Peter Beatie and taken away our stadia. Why, what have we done to them? I really wish we had another party to vote for, maybe I'll never vote again. Or maybe that's what they want. No more democracy. We should just admit we've all gone crazy and vote Peter Fitzsimmons as elpresidente.

If you think people in the public service anywhere in this country work hard , you are either dillusional , stupid or a public servant yourself .

Canberra is the centre of the Australian Capital Territory & is an Island in NSW & is not part of NSW & has not been since Federation. The Raiders players should not be automatically eligible for NSW Origan selection. That should stir a little?

Surely this is a no issue. The Raiders apparently had a deal (aka a contract) and broke it so they have to pay a penalty. Where's the problem?

Surely it's reasonable to deduct a specific portion of any contract incentive if one of the parties fails to meet one of the stipulations in that contract. Seems ok to me, probably nothing to do with the general population in Canberra who wouldn't get input.

Labor fell out of touch ages ago, but the Liberals have never been in touch with them to begin with.

This is what happens when politicians get involved in sport and the ones that do attend matches probably get free tickets. Look at the moron in charge of the commission, didn't even know who the sharks were. Probably thought it was something you caught while fishing. And Bob Carr started this off reading a book while the match was on. But when the new Sydney stadiums at Moore park and parramatta reopens they'll be there with their snouts in the trough.

Yeah - right. Thanks for the usual insightful Canberra bashing from someone who has no idea how the place operates. I've been in Canberra for almost 20 years and the people who work in both the public and private sectors here work harder than a lot of the other places I've lived in Australia which includes Adelaide, Darwin and Sydney. And I think you'll find that League appeals to a wider audience than you think. If you did a survey of the crowd at a a typical Canberra home game you will get a real cross section of society. Over the past few years the ACT Government has lost touch with a lot of their grass roots support - probabky becasue they take them for granted - and this decision to fine the Raiders $150,000 is just another example.

we all know the ABC has a massive labor bias and that organisation are blatant in their dislike of Rugby League.

Wow ! A city full of lazy , overpaid, inefficient, ignorant public servants predominantly voting labor , now there’s a bombshell. Labor and the left hate league, it represents the working class , and that’s something labor fell out of touch with a long long time ago.

Unbelievable and disgraceful decision. Just goes to show how out of touch Andrew Barr and his Labor Government are with his constituents and the local community in the ACT. How can they not see that going to Wagga will only enhance the reputation of the Raiders in the region? And could lead to more memberships and bigger attendances at home games in the ACT. Barr is happy to shell out millions to get GWS to play AFL matches in Canberra but his relationship with the Raiders and local League supporters is non existent. The bloke is badly in need of a reality check but this place is a Labor town and the message is not getting through that people want more than what this Government is currently providing. Bruce Stadium is badly in need of a make over or rebuild and all talk about an enclosed stadium in the inner city has been shelved. Thankfully the Centre of Excellence has been funded thanks to some extra funding from the NSW state government and should be operational in a year or so.

So you would have to assume the NRL are picking up the majority of this $150k. Surely if the Raiders have a contract like this, the NRL scheduling has to take this into account. However, quite short sighted by the ACT government in not allowing a game 2 hours down the road. It's an investment in the Raiders brand and the gate takings, which would most likely sell out, could compensate a fair portion of this.
