Alb, would you have the same attitude if Nathan Cleary was on the end of that tackle. The hit was late & high. If that contact was with the shoulder the offending player would have at least a month on the sideline. If you watch the replay the Panthers defence seemed planned with May rushing Walsh & Luai covering from behind. When a centre runs up early like May he leave a great gap only Luai was covering the gap. The contact with the head is mostly worse than the shoulder. The Sydney Centric media/press are having a field day with their comments. Many of the press are “Lounge Critics” who wouldn’t know how to lace up a boot.

The Referee should get a weeks suspension for getting in the way.

Regarding the Walsh incident & the Referee overturning the Bunker. Several situations come to mind. Firstly that players deliberately mob Fullbacks & Wingers and stop a genuine catch by the defending player . Secondly I have witnessed on numerous occasions players being picked up by the Referee for an infringement & the player asks the Referee to look at the replay on the big screen only to be told “We can’t do that”. I agree that we need a Bunker but we need something like the English system where the Referee & the Video Referee talk their way through lead up to the ultimate decision. We need a Bunker staffed by experts. To get rid of the Bunker would be like throwing the baby out with the bath water.

I viewed the Warriors game and I to wondered why there was a different rulings of similar incidents. I agree with the NZ sponsor view. I have viewed many hundreds of games over a lengthy period & the conclusion I have come to is that there is a “Sydney Centric Bias” in the form of “Unconscious Bias” with Bunker & Referees rulings with Teams outside of NSW.

Tony, I ask the question, is Duncan Thompson an Immortal? If not, why? Leading up to Anzac day I read his Rugby league playing, Coaching & Military History. I am surprised as Thompson played for Qld, NSW & Australia. He also played in the North Sydney Bears side when they won their last Premiership. Tony take a little time an just “google” Duncan Thompson, Duncan coached Toowoomba with victories over touring sides Great Britain, New Zealand & New Sout Wales.

How would the 13 Immortals fare in the modern game, and what positions would they play?

Historically the NRL & previously the ARL were very hard on teams that had an extra player on the field. I remember the Gold Coast, when Wally Lewis was coach having their points deducted for that offence. The Broncos had 2 points held back for at least a month while a retired Magistrate arbitrated the case. From memory the Broncos regained their 2 points but copped a $75,000 fine. The offence was for a replacement player (Corey Parker) entering the playing field before the injured player (Shane Webke) had got off the field.

Albo, I feel sorry for Sam Walker being dropped. Halfbacks don’t lose games, it is the forward packs that lose the forward battle that are the Roosters problem.

It was NSWRL for several years after the Broncos entered the competition.

Should have been sent off. It was a good old “Coat Hanger- Stiff Arm”. There was also a a bad high shot from a Sydney city player that deserves a couple of weeks on the sideline.

'Lucky to be on': Should Jack Hetherington have been sent off after poleaxing Taupau?

Everyone is an expert after the fact. Ever since the return (round 3) the Broncos have had almost half a run on team on the side lines. Add to that so many inexperienced youngsters in the team & you are going to get belted. Leave Seibold alone & let him build for 2021 & beyond. After Bennett left to go to St. George the Broncos lost 7 players to other Clubs, most on the advise of Bennett. There was also mess post Bennett this time to clean up.

Where to now for the struggling Brisbane Broncos?

I made comment on relocation of Sydney teams to Qld on the Roar site about a week ago & nobody took any notice. The general tone from Sydney siders seem to be that they would rather see the competition close down before Sydney teams were relocated to Qld. It all may be hypothetical now as two 19 yo young ladies with Covid19 flew in from Melbourne & have done the wrong thing & they have had 8 days to spread the virus around Logan City.

NRL seeking travel exemption after Queensland closes border to Sydney

Randy,
I first played League in the 7stone 7pounds weight 64 years ago & I have have followed it ever since especially since 1980 with the SOO starting & Qld teams entering the NSW competition. I can assure you that I have great long term memory & that the Gould interview did take place. It wasn’t Qld paranioia.
Gould in his position as CEO or Manager of Penrith visited as a “Guest” the Broncos & Cowboys to see their training & gym setups. While in Townsville as a “Guest” Gould behind the scenes tried to sign up Thurston. I rest my case.

Why the NRL wants Phil Gould at Moore Park

Rellum, very early days of the Cowboys & remember in 1995 four new clubs were brought into the competition & player stocks were very thin. I didn’t say that Hannay was a potential world beater but I can remember Arthurson refusing Hannay playing as he would beat Gasnier’ record.

NRL may bend the rules in order to sign Joseph Suaalii

Gould is a rusted on Sydney Centric who only looks outside of Sydney (NSW which is really only the triangle of Newcastle Sydney & Woolongong) when looking to poach an interstate player. It would be better to engage an outsider to have an overall view of the game not a biased view from Gould. I can remember him in an interview saying he would like to scrap all teams outside of NSW & go back to the old Sydney competition. Gould’s game is controversy to keep himself in the headlines & nothing else matters.

Why the NRL wants Phil Gould at Moore Park

Big Daddy,
What rule? This rule was brought in by Arthurson (remember him) in 1995 or 96 when the Cowboys announced that they were going to play a 17 yo in their team. Arthurson refused to let Josh Hannay play as in his words he wouldn’t allow Hannay to break the record of Reg Gasnier playing as a 17 yo. Apparently Hannay was months younger than Gasnier. That is my recollection of the situation but I am open to be corrected.

Cyril Connell was the Recruitment manager with the Broncos since the start with the Broncos until his passing several years ago. Cyril had a background in High school Teaching at classroom, Headteacher & Administration levels & he had contacts (Teachers) all over the State keeping an eye out for talent. Cyril was probably the best recruiter of his time. Cyril Connells passing left a great hole in recruitment at the Broncos & no replacement has lived up to his level.

Seibold is done, and the board needs to explain

Albo,
I agree on some of your points but I strongly disagree with you on The Broncos having the whole of Qld to themselves with emerging players. Cameron Smith is a player often mentioned as a player the Broncos missed out on but he was put forward to the Broncos as a five/eight. The Broncos had a pretty good player in that position (Lockyer). Really Qld is open slather to NSW & Victoria (Storm) for spotting young emerging talent. Over 20 or so years I have attended Confraternity Shield games to watch nephews & great nephews play & to my amazement I witnessed & had pointed out to me representatives of nearly every NSW Club including Arthur Beatson. The Confraternity Shield is played each year in a different City between Catholic/Brothers/some Grammer & Anglican Secondary Schools.

Seibold is done, and the board needs to explain

The Broncos last weekend had almost half of their regular team on the sidelines either injured or suspended. Manly had their star fullback out injured & that was their excuse for loosing to the Sharks? When the Broncos get their “cattle” back on the field watch out.

Seibold is done, and the board needs to explain

Nat, I would question the stats there a bit. From memory Milford was praised all round for his play in both games(rounds 1 & 2). I also remember a try where Milford took a pass of a falling Osaka & ran around many Souths players & crashed over the line with 3 players holding onto him. There is the old saying, (there is lies, lies & statistics). Really we are missing something here Nat, the game has changed so much over the years. The players are now super fit compared to even 5 years ago ( look at some of the videos of games from that period). Also go back to the game when it was unlimited tackles (possession) was slow & players were unfit compared to todays players. With the rule change of 6 again to the attacking team we now have unlimited tackles on “Steroids” with the defending team being run off their feet & when they get possession they are generally in their own 10- 20 metre zone in their half. The Referees, sorry the single Referee are overplaying their 6 again calls & it is hard to see any consistency in their rulings.

Time for the Broncos to move on from Milford

The first two rounds the Broncos won the forward battle & Milford couldn’t be faulted & now when the forwards aren’t doing their job Milford is getting the blame. I can see some very selective journalism here without a great depth of knowledge of the game. Rugby League is a simple game, win the forward battle & players like Milford will be able to excel.

Time for the Broncos to move on from Milford

Just Wondering, what did Milford do? He was tackled & getting up to play the ball, Radley was the tackler was he not?

Broncos, bow your heads in shame

Your joking, could I please have some of what you are smoking?

Bring back the Amco Cup

The Magic Round worked in Brisbane simply because 15 Clubs other than the Broncos travelled & played there & their supporters came in numbers. A Stadium within walking distance of the CBD with over 50,000 capacity was also a great bonus.
I really think playing the Magic Round in Sydney would/could be a disaster. My reasoning is that the 9 Sydney Clubs are Suburban Teams & they are not known for travelling to support their teams in the Greater Sydney Area (Manly Fans refuse to cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge to support their team in a Semi-final game).

LISTEN: Can Magic Round ever work outside Brisbane or Sydney?

Bazza,
I take your point about wrestling coaches at most clubs but the Storm are so professional at holding the tackled player down that they have time to set their ruck defence. Other teams, at times are free kicked for holding the player down against the Storm (using simular tactics). The season will be long & you will see the Storm strangle the opposition with these tactics that only they are allowed to get away with.

Storm and Broncos win on the back of the NRL’s greatest showmen: Suliasi Vunivalu and Tevita Pangai

Birdy,
Why would you blame the Broncos for the BRL problem of 1988? Look back to 1987 or maybe a year earlier, the Sydney Clubs were circling to sign up nearly every Brisbane/Qld player possible (Manly were going to sign Wally Lewis & Gene Miles).
The QRL were not in favour of entering a Brisbane based Club in the NSW (Sydney) competition but were forced into it. The Gold Coast were never in the equation as they played out of the Sea Gulls Ground just over the Border. Brothers, 1987 Premiership winners lost 12 of their run on side to the NSW competition. Only one Brothers player signed with the Broncos & the other 11 went mostly to St. George 7 North Sydney. I could keep writing but please don’t put the blame on the Broncos for the demise of the BRL competition, blame where it should be, the greedy NSW (Sydney Clubs). I would have loved to have seen Valleys, Brothers & Wests still playing in the old BRL competition but the QRL Intrust competition is great as it covers from the Tweed to Cairns & includes the remaining/surviving old BRL Clubs.
