Cheika survives Rugby Australia review - for now

By The Roar / Editor

Michael Cheika will live to fight at least a few more days as the coach of the Wallabies but is no guarantee to retain the position into the new year.

Cameron Clyne gave an extremely brief press conference after Rugby Australia held their final board meeting of December, giving Australian rugby fans no more information than to say the board is still ‘going through the process’ of deciding Cheika’s fate.

Clyne said they hope to have concluded the process by Christmas.

“We’ve had a presentation from Michael, we’ve had some data gathered from him, from his coaching staff, players and high-performance unit; and we need to through a fairly thorough review process,” said Clyne.

“We’ve got all the information we need and we’ll be going through that process.

“I know people are very keen to know what’s going on, but I just felt it was important to at least let you know where we are in that process, and obviously we’ll have more to say and have that process wrapped up ahead of Christmas.

“It’ll be done by Christmas, the review process.”

The press conference went for only a minute and Clyne exited immediately, ignoring requests to take questions from reporters.

It came after a day where it was widely speculated that Cheika will retain his position as coach of the Wallabies, but the national side may undergo a significant reshuffling among its assistant coaches.

The news will no doubt be received with frustration by Australian rugby fans who will be wondering what more time the board could need to make a decision on the team’s coaching future.

With the 2019 Rugby World Cup just nine months away, fans are crying out for clarity over how the Wallabies intend to transform from their lowest ebb into a competitive challenger.

Some will no doubt find it reminiscent of Rugby Australia’s lengthy ‘process’ to ultimately decide on the ejection of the Western Force from the Super Rugby competition, which dragged out far longer than was initially advertised by the game’s executives.

That saga gives fans little confidence that Rugby Australia can be relied upon to meet their stated deadline of a decision by Christmas.

If you don't review the situation how do you come to a decision?

Is it Clyne or Cheeks that appears closest to a Teresa May ? Either way demonstrates quite the dire sitation

If they had no decision to make why set-up a press review? Clearly they thought they will make a decision and the RA could not agree on the decision

Very interesting when you look at the win and other metrics for past coaches. Bob Dwyer is #1, guess who is #2? No not McQueen, Jones etc. It's leave a lump in your throat.....yep, none other than Robbie Deans. Maybe its time to look at the international talent again as most other nations have done for their Head Coach??

And mostly I just like to offer the same scrutiny, to people who in their comments want to publicly scrutinize others.

Never said the NSW government would never spend money in Sydney's West. Merely claimed the Waratahs home base was a pork barreling exercise. And was attempting to point out to people criticizing the Tahs for this, that the government had not given them a blank cheque to use as they see fit and they chose to do this over spending it on grassroots, they had agreed to fund a specific development.

Changes topics or just ignores the facts. The same bloke in his attemp of political grandstanding claimed the NSW government would never spend money in Sydney's west, just completely ignores the facts that prove otherwise and back tracks on his accusations. It's a shame that someone as intelligent as himself, that often has great contributions, resorts to this style of debate at times including the obligoritory name calling. He obviously doesn't have any skin in the ARU, he just likes to pick a view point and argue for it to the death, despite the evidence. We are all allowed to be wrong now and then and it is refreshing when someone admits it. I thought I was once, but I was mistaken.

Maybe we should replace Cheika with Cheika's agent. Anyone who can draft a contract with such iron-bound guarantees about total control and large pay-out clauses must be a clever fellow. Have they got any experience coaching a rugby side?

Would not be equivalent to a COO, as RA had a COO (stepped down, not sure if replaced). Don't see much about trading being suspended because the General Manager of a department has their future in doubt. But that's because there's no media attention around these people in these roles.

Why was it the moment? Why is 2 weeks time not the moment? It did not and does not have to occur on the day of a board meeting. That date will be significant because a decision will be based around events that occur at the meeting. The only significance is the board were all required to be at the monthly meeting.

So you don't wish to address the question on actual attendance of the fact that there are no ratings over 40k for games?

Terrible result for the Wallabies. Obligated to spend a set % on player salaries so potentially no saving. Squad with McMahon, Morahan and White at our disposal may be better. Except the squad with them won't convene two or three weeks before a test for a camp. They'll be on a flight home on Sunday and probably not ready to train until a Tuesday before the test. Then if we play a 3rd Bledisloe they aren't even available. Likewise a 4th EOYT test. Then there's the fact that we are talking about managing workloads, etc. in a RWC year. You think that's hard with Super Rugby teams propped up by Wallaby income? Try an English club owned by some European billionaire. The purpose of the selection rules are to protect the Super Rugby franchises. You're right. The overseas clubs aren't going to take everybody. Instead of the players like Skelton, White and Morahan who were fringe Wallabies at best, they'll be taking players like Coleman, Rodda and DHP. Regular first choice wallabies. Which means now our best team is available for 12 tests a year max, and only from the Monday of that test, at best.

Was the rest of the 7-hour board meeting taken up by a strategy discussion about how they are going to get Fox to put in a bid for the SuperRugby and RC broadcast rights post 2020? Is this Cheika stuff a smokescreen to stop people asking why there’s been no announcement yet about the SR and RC competitions post 2020? Is the final curtain about to fall on RA?

So the COO or Head of Manufacturing is under increased scrutiny and it would not be reported in the business pages or have any reflection on share price? I disagree and think it would. So yes and yes.

He may. But it's not necessary. Those players may not be in Brisbane either. As they are on their mandated leave. Given they get very defined leave periods it's highly likely they will be holidaying elsewhere in fact. So without a coach people like Ben Whittaker won't set up S&C systems, plans, directions of workloads, etc? They aren't going to re-invent the wheel. Talk of workloads and resting would be based around the maximum time the franchises would accept without huge complaints - regardless of who is the coach, that threshold won't really change. But no you're right. Even though no players that went on the EOYT are required to be training with their franchise, and the coach is planning for their first game in July - it will fall apart if the decision on the coach is delayed from 10/12 to 24/12.

I'm just answering James' statement that the board need to consider all aspects. The board already know everything they need to know. I personally don't think they will sack Cheika, or should, because firstly, they can't afford to, & secondly, it would only be a short-term sugar fix. Anyway, I've added more further on. Perhaps the board will try to make Cheika's position untenable, thus coaxing him to resign. That's would be a very management thing to do.
