How much longer until all NRL fans walk away?

By The King of the World / Roar Guru

I’m a rugby league fan. There are millions of others around the world.

However, every time I open the paper I don’t hear about off-season training or inside scoops for next year’s premiership. Instead, I read these media reports of things like sexual assault or violence against women.

This has got to stop!

In the NRL, we have seen five reports of some form of this since the grand final and it just makes me sick. People in the public domain get educated about these things. We know they exist and we know not to do it. We are told the consequences of what will happen if we do and we learn to respect women.

Apparently the same lessons have been lost on NRL players.

I’m calling for a stand now for the NRL directly. If a player gets charged and convicted, ban him for life.

I don’t care who it is – if it’s a 20-year-old rookie or a 35-year-old fan favourite veteran who everyone loves and the children adore – do not let him back in the game.

Sure I know some players have done it in the past and got to return. I’m prepared to see anything amongst the lines of “What about that player?”

Player welfare is incredibly important. But so is the welfare of women. These issues are eroding support for the game and if I was a member of the NRL board I would be saying “we can’t take it anymore”.

As fans of the game, we want to go through the off-season without having to read about off-field drama but sadly all because of one report or another, we do.

It’s not only turning off casual fans, but the game’s most loyal and rusted on supporters have had a gutful.

So what do you Roarers think? Should the NRL give lifetime bans to players who are convicted of such heinous acts from this point on?

Ive decided not to watch the footy this year, every fan knows deep down the game isnt anywhere near as entertaining as it used to be & ive just got better things to do with my time then support a bunch of grubs who need a serious reality check

And this is why victims aren't on the judge and jury. So, that whole "if the victim was your daughter/sister" fallacy is nonsense. This is nothing more than an appeal-to-emotion and a forgoing of rational thought.

Many would think that an 18 year old player who made a fatal error to drive while drunk and unfortunately killed someone would be allowed to play in the NRL once he had served his sentence. It's not the same thing as the examples you have listed above.

Mandatory sentencing happens after someone is convicted not accused. Mandatory sentencing is a disaster. Some offences are minor and some are incredibly serious and it as foolish to deal out the same punishment for both.

It's not mandatory sentencing? My understanding is the question is: If convicted of certain crimes should NRL players be banned for life, you need to focus on convicted. So you believe a player convicted, not accused, of rape, assault, drink driving etc, should be given the benefit of the doubt? I personally don't care what consenting adults get up to in the spare time and that includes NRL players, but I have young children and like it or not NRL players are their role models, if convicted of a serious offense, boot them.

Would be interested to see your reaction if someone close to you was a victim, say maybe your daughter/sister/mother/boyfriend/son/father, was raped/bashed, killed by a drink driver? Life time ban seems like mild punishment to me. We're not talking about taking them out of society, we are talking about not letting them play in the NRL again. There are lots of workplaces where zero tolerance is already accepted, do you think a police officer found guilty of rape/assault should be allowed to remain in the police force, what about a child molesting school teacher?

Yes I think they should, however, I think it should extend further and include all players convicted of serious criminal offenses, such as drink driving, assault, etc.

So the answer is no, you don't get. Thanks for making it clear. I don't want to change any laws. That isn't the point. Nice straw man argument by the way.

I think Roy and HG summed it up rather well. Keep all NRL players in prison and let them out when they have to play a game.

You think repeating a line from my post is clever, somehow? It's not. You simply look silly, attributing an argument to my post that isn't there. I at no point suggested that all must be innocent because a sample was proven so. Basic literacy classes might be in order for you. However, both players were absolutely slaughtered by media think pieces like that (that, incidentally, show almost no real thought) and had their incomes, careers and reputations damaged by a slew of articles like this that are based on the assumption that they actually did what they are accused of, and are not the target of malicious intent by the accuser. How about you let the facts come out, first? Because by this standard anyone could be accused of assault (sexual or otherwise in nature) and we'd be obligated to believe. Ridiculous. If the guy is guilty, just throw him out of the game. Until then, go away.

Let’s get serious. You and your idi0t mate are nothing but tr0lls. You did exactly this same routine two years ago. You come on here do your one two bully act with aggressive language and constant, endless harping about meaningless stuff like “guru” and “rage”. You make it personal, call it banter and then pull the “what do you mean, we didn’t do anything” act when anyone responds. You view any comment as an “attack” and then ramp up this two on one pathetic bullying act. What was the comment that I “attacked” you with on your first day here...? Let’s see how bad this “attack” was that’s warranted two days of idi0tic responses to every serious comment I make. AE47 hasn’t contributed ONE single post that contributes one shred of intelligence or value to this (or any) topic. Yet carries on with “no one here can understand our art of league” BS. I’ve said it before if you want to talk footy we’ll talk footy but I’m not copping this two on one Waldorf and Stattler, George and Lennie routine. You left two years ago (together) with your tails between your legs because you alienated everyone on this site with your BS and the WHOLE site turned on you. You’ve changed IDs but come back (together) with the exact same routine. Enjoy the site, let’s discuss footy or let’s not but if you two cretins keep up the same routine I guarantee the result will be the same as last time.

I might be wrong. You might be as slow as your little mate. I’ve used just as much facts, logic and counter argument as you have. Show me one FACT you used in your argument. There’s not one. You’ve given your opinion that Souths played off, I’ve given my opinion that they didn’t.

TB let's get serious for a minute, shall we? As "Guru" and a more "experienced" and more "senior" contributor to the site shouldn't you be setting an example for the rest of us? All this back and forth bickering is hardly going to win you any respect and will only encourage more of the same surely? Remember, you launched an attack on me after one of my first few posts on my very first day here. I had neither criticised you or provoked YOU directly in any way. Was THAT the sort of example that a "Guru" should be setting? You should notice at this point how, for the most part, other "Gurus" have stayed out of this and left you to dig a hole for yourself not wishing to further escalate tensions or inflame the situation further. Perhaps you should follow their wise example? Perhaps YOU should be setting an example for the rest of us? Perhaps you also would have noticed that there is a growing number of disaffected contributors who are speaking out in opposition to your over-involvement and heavy-handed approach to this site. Beware the Ides of March Caesar!
