Cricket Australia unveils ODI XI for series decider

By Stirling Coates / Editor

Billy Stanlake and Adam Zampa have been included in Australia’s XI for the third ODI against India, with Jason Behrendorff and Nathan Lyon the exclusions.

Behrendorff has had his troublesome back flare up once more, with the injury forcing him out of the ODI squad and also seeing Cricket Australia not release him to the Perth Scorchers for BBL duty.

Stanlake will take his place in the side, whereas Lyon has simply been omitted to make way for Zampa.

Kane Richardson has been called into the squad as cover for the injured Behrendorff, but will still be free to play for the Melbourne Renegades in the meantime.

It will be a critical third match for Australia, as they look to claim their first ODI series victory since a 4-1 triumph over Pakistan in 2017.

A 34-run victory over India at the SCG got the series off to a perfect start but, while they were gallant, they dropped the second match in Adelaide by six wickets.

It’s been a truly horrid run for the green and gold in ODIs of late. While they were able to recover from a 5-0 whitewash against South Africa in 2016 with series wins over New Zealand and Pakistan, it’s been rough sailing since.

Losses to New Zealand (2-0), India (4-1), back-to-back series defeats to England and another to South Africa have seen the Aussies tumble to sixth in the world rankings.

Australian XI to play India, 3rd ODI

Aaron Finch (c), Alex Carey, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Peter Handscomb, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Jhye Richardson, Peter Siddle, Adam Zampa, Billy Stanlake

At least it's 1-1 into this final ODI, but man the scheduling has still annoyed me greatly, more so the fact they are cramming a BBL match tonight in Perth after it, to accommodate more matches overall. It reeks of desperation to fit the excessive number of matches in, if you have to start an ODI an hour earlier to allow everything to fit. I don't quite get it, less is more sometimes with this stuff, but as we have seen, CA seem to care little about the quality of their products, more just the volume of it.

Yeah, Handscomb strikes me as being someone who could bat well with the tail. Much better than Maxwell I think. Swap them around in the order?

How do Stoinis and Handscomb bat above Maxwell?

Mitch Marsh has been retained with the squad instead of being released for Scorchers v Hurricanes. No complaints here ! In last season's semi-final at Perth Stadium v Hurricanes his figures were 4 overs 0/53, and 3 runs with the bat, a nett deficit of 50 runs in a 70-run loss.

Stanlake is incredibly overrated. He’s the new Shaun Tait.

I can see where you're coming from believe me but Mitchell Marsh's is a much better player in ODI's then Test's.

"Should’ve brought in Mitch Marsh for Behrendorf" Let us assume that you were being sarcastic here.

How on Earth is Siddle not dropped he is useless. Should have brought in Agar instead of Lyon to keep it tight and add batting depth and he is also a good fielder. Lyon just didn't get for wickets he just kept it tight and bowled flat. I still think he could be a good ODI bowler if he actually tried to take wickets. Stanlake is overrated IMO I would look to see other bowlers given a chance.

Shame about Behrendorff, it would have been good to see Stanlake come in for Siddle. I hope Zampa bowls with confidence, he can be a real handful when his tail's up.

Should've brought in Mitch Marsh for Behrendorff. Stanlake is seriously overrated and you just have to look at his recent BBL for to confirm that. Agreed Lyon needed to be dropped, did not look threatening at all in the first two games. I definitely would've dropped Siddle as well.
