Warne is just a windbag as a commentator. However, one point about Australia is that most of our wickets don’t turn that much so bounce is a factor and the old ball does not bounce well. It was not until Mark Taylor become captain that spin was well understood by our leadership group so we have not always been at our best here. The reason why a number of sub continent tweakers have done poorly is they expected and were used to much more turn, bounce was not a factor. However I wonder how that niggling bugger Daniel Vettori would have gone in Sydney? I remember my dad talking about watching Grimmett and saying he was amazed how much height he gave the ball, he was not usually considered a big turner so bounce again?

New Zealand’s poor treatment of spin bowlers has been their main flaw in Australia

I wonder if the herculean efforts of the Ashes tour have left him just plain knackered. He was near enough batting at 3 given the absolute crap opening stands and not much from any opener except in one innings. That whack on the head might have had long term effects too. I do not know, but if one or two other batters had “failed” to his level in England we would have won the series.

In Marnus' shadow, struggling Smith has still contributed

Concerned about the longevity of the keeper captain set up. There have been very few long term ones, they tend to fade in keeping or batting, so it is good to see Paine getting a few. I wondered why they didn’t give Marnus a few more overs, but I think the Kiwis did all right with a much chopped lineup. Question, why do we still have players who are glued to the pitch? Labuschagne and Smith are noticeably more mobile. Warner looks so much better when he is moving and Burns has lost his wicket twice from not getting to the ball. Better weight transfer = less hard hands, better position = less edges. Good to see the Kiwis getting some credit, because O thought that a few of the Aussies were a bit sub par yesterday and this morning. They have achieved redemption since lunch though.

New Zealand fight back at the SCG

I like a serious contest between bat and ball. Therefore, while I do watch a bit of BBL the crap shots that get lots of runs annoy me. Mind you I am a cranky old git and 20 odd years older than your crew. Some of the boundaries on some grounds are about the same as the U12 NSW primary schools knockout boundaries. There are a hell of a lot of sixes that would be catches on a real field. Because I like the contest I have issues with the BBL and the umpiring at times is poor. So I don’t feel like they are doing much for me, but at least you raise the issue. One daughter hates it one quite likes it (mid and late 30s)

Does the Big Bash do enough to look after Test cricket fans?

You seem to have forgotten how long it can take to become a good spinner. Benaud took several years to become effective, Warne got some pastings early on. The inventor of the Flipper a bloke called Grimmett debuted at 33 and played his last series at 44 and took 44 wickets. Hell’s teeth Wilfred Rhodes played his last test at 52, a career that lasted 30 years. Spin bowling, especially leg spin is no simple matter and none of the leggies I see have enough control.

O'Keefe should be in Test squad instead of Swepson

And the much vaunted Wade and Head contributed sod all this morning. I actually thought Burns was out to another piece of hopeless footwork, Warner was a bit unlucky. I reckon they hung on OK given the state of the team. I also think Williamson might be a bit weary, thereby making him more susceptible.

New Zealand produce tame effort at SCG

I also had the flu last spring and it cost me 4 days in an ICU and another 5 in my local hospital and I was told if I had come in in another 5 or 6 hours I may well not have survived. I wonder if you have had the flu or just some of the symptoms. I collapsed because I did not stay home from work. Is that what you want Williamson to do?

New Zealand produce tame effort at SCG

It certainly looked like the right choice for the first 10-15 overs. Labuschane could easily have gone cheaply, he got the rub. Warner, being a dill, did the hard work early and well, then he became unable to move his feet and got out. I was surprised how much the ball seamed. Had Burns moved correctly, he would probably have survived, but that ball came back off the seam and that is hard to play. I did not see many swing for NZ, but there were some bloody good leg and off cutters. They looked good when they bowled that way.

Black Caps' tactics exposed on Aussie soil

Fair comment. It highlights a couple of very odd selections in the Ashes in this regard. This is clearly the best lineup of quicks. I’d like to see more of Neser before I comment there, but Richardson has a certain something I think.

New Zealand batsmen have embarrassed themselves

We never do that ever do we? I’ve seen Australia bat atrociously in the 4th innings plenty of times.

New Zealand batsmen have embarrassed themselves

Bowlers would disagree I think. We have lost games enforcing.

New Zealand batsmen have embarrassed themselves

If you think Waugh’s late cut or back foot cover drive were not pretty, then I’m not sure we were watching the same player. The greats have a knack of playing some shots that look too easy. Greg Chappell’s clip through midwicket was an example S Waugh had that as well. Note, I am not knocking Head. I want him to succeed because I think he deserves to and has a good attitude.

Head is improving, even if his critics won't admit it

No that would be a very tall order, however he was elegant but not diligent I often thought. I do not think much of him as a selector however.

Head is improving, even if his critics won't admit it

PS Rowdy’s comments make interesting reading. I well remember Waugh’s poor approach to the short ball, but there are those who have the brains to learn. It is also worth remembering that Ponting had to be dropped for idiocy to realise his potential. Clark had to go back to the shield, arriving in Buchanan’s time when every new player seemed to suddenly get worse not better.

Head is improving, even if his critics won't admit it

I have thought Head looked like he could do the job. I worry about ugly largely because ugly techniques often hide flaws of balance or footwork, but if you think Head is ugly, you don’t remember Hussey or one or two recent openers selected. I like Marnus except his “leave” gives me a heart attack with the bat wandering across his body. Smith has a very ugly technique, but it works for him. Steve Waugh was never ugly, but Border was, what they had in common with Smith is a tremendous tenacity and I think Labuschane might have that. Head, we shall see, but I live in some hope.

Head is improving, even if his critics won't admit it

Agree about Cummins. He was lacking in luck and abundant in everything else. The impact he has on other bowlers matters. He looks vigorous and alert. I have always loved that in him. I am hoping for Neser in Melbourne, Pattinson always looks like its hard work and Neser has taken 5 for bugger all a couple of times this summer. He can also bat a bit. The Perth test once again shows the value of Starc and Cummins and the moronic selection that left him out in England.

Australian bowling trio runs through New Zealand for emphatic first-Test win

Ad the form of his replacements was brilliant yes? Oh…. it wasn’t was it.

Burns must finally be respected by Test selectors

Yes but why????

Burns must finally be respected by Test selectors

I can very well remember the first time I saw him. In the days when we saw a bit of domestic cricket long ponytail and a bit of a nasty bounce. I loved him and still do. At his prime he had a lovely run in and action. I think Buchanan destroyed him, a coach who I think set the cause of bowling back several years. One DK Lillee and S Warne concur as far as I can see. I’ve never asked McGrath who I know slightly as a former neighbour on the farm.

An ode to Jason Gillespie, the bowler’s bowler

Seen a few young blokes wrecked and Australian test cricket does not seem to improve people as it once did. I am more interested by the fact that Labuschane did well when there was clearly help for the bowlers. Conway took 10-56 and apart from Marnus, Burns was the only Qld player to pass 50. Neser and Gannon also did well and NSW other than Warner, Hughes and Nevil did not achieve all that much. One problem with the early Shield is that the Gabba is often a bit tricky and everywhere else is as flat as a road and less bouncy. Bellerive can do it too, early in the season you can’t make a score and late, you can’t get out. Balance between bat and ball is sadly lacking in our wickets.

Warner and Pucovski ton up in Sheffield Shield

My point is that he scored runs on a wicket that no one got out on till they ran out of puff. 1280 for 12 wickets is not much indication.

Warner and Pucovski ton up in Sheffield Shield

Usually agree, but with 1280 odd for 12 wickets, this tell us nothing much.

Maddinson and Harris push Test claims with Shield tons

I just don’t understand why we have a different 9,10, 12 every bloody match.

Five things we learned from the Wallabies' win over Georgia

Our line up sure has been. I get sick of seeing bowlers carrying the batting, so thank heave for Smith. There is obviously something amiss in our cricket at home if we cannot get an opener from the shield to a test. Probably batting friendly wickets, stupid schedules and no hard arse old bastards playing shield anymore.

Yes we have a leftie or two too many.
