Canterbury fans see their Pay day coming

By Daniel Buchanan / Roar Rookie

None of the experts want to include the Canterbury Bulldogs in their finals calculations. They are not fancied to do much at all this year.

Their key half is broken and not motivated, they say. Their coach is unproven, they say. They lack any form of threat in their attack, they say. They lack experienced winners, they say. The front office is still bickering, they say, and the back office, well they’re not happy either, they say.

The Dogs supporters, however, are somewhat more optimistic about the season to follow.

Though they’re not going to win the comp, the excitement among supporters is that we can expect them to compete, to challenge for a finals berth, and to play a brand of football that is both good to watch and rooted in the successful Belmore model.

A well-established pattern in sport is the way that teams begin to take on the personality of their coach. In their first year under Dean Pay, the Dogs’ attack resembled a worse version of the completely outdated and ineffective end of the Des Hasler era.

They never looked like a finals team and supporters experienced an unusual year when it was clear from early on that their Doggies would not be in the finals.

However, dedicated supporters look at the relatively good defensive record – the coach was a renowned defender.

We look at the way the attack started to play with more freedom and less structure at the end of the year and it paid dividends – the coach played in a Canterbury team who had success with a similar style.

We look at the number of games lost by small margins – we were in it, we didn’t give up, we fought until the end – the coach was a renowned winner and always fought tooth and nail.

We look at the recruits for 2019. Sauaso Sue is a hard, aggressive forward with skill, in need of a change of environment. Corey Harawira-Naera is a hard, aggressive forward with skill, squeezed out of a stronger club with a boom crop of talent. Dylan Napa is a harder and more aggressive forward than most, in need of a change of environment.

These are forwards in Pay’s image. Hard nuts who can intimidate, with some skill to spark attacking raids.

In Josh Jackson, Rhyse Martin, Raymond Faitala-Mariner, and Adam Elliott, there is a diversity of skills that will suit the more expansive game that Pay is sure to employ. The forwards recruited and retained are perhaps the clearest indication of his plans.

Too much has been made of David Klemmer’s departure, and leading the post-contact metres statistics does not win games of football. Fans will tell you they are glad to see him go, that he is over-rated, not the enforcer he is made out to be, doesn’t really sting in defence, and loses his discipline when the game gets willing.

In the backs, Nick Meaney comes with a strong reputation but no real first-grade pedigree as yet, Jack Cogger is a 50-50 bet, and Christian Crichton adds depth.

They join the likes of Reimis Smith, whose memorable finish to 2018 was a highlight in a dim year, and the improving Kerrod Holland.

We don’t know what to expect from youngsters like Morgan Harper and Jayden Okunbor, but there was plenty to like from them in the ISP team’s all-conquering run last year.

In Pay’s most successful year playing at the Dogs, the 1995 premiership, the backline included solid first-graders. No more, no less.

Some of the other signs we saw from Pay in 2018 have had no impact at all yet, but rusted-on followers liked them a lot.

We liked the fact that Aaron Woods was a casualty of the back-ended contract debacle. We liked the fact that there were whispers about efforts to move Aiden Tolman on.

We expected the ‘Dogs of War’, and most of the time we got nondescript Maltese Terriers, occasionally a nuisance but offering neither threat nor presence. Woods and Tolman are emblematic of this, they don’t suit what Pay wants to build.

Old friend and foe Willie Mason made his most salient comment when he said that Tolman’s high tackle-count every week shows more negatives than positives about his style, with this volume of tackles being made possible largely because no one is scared to run at him. In contrast, Napa and Sue will have a few opponents looking up as they are about to catch the Steeden, as will young Ofahiki Ogden.

Why are we reading in to this with hope? Look no further than the 1995 semi-final against Brisbane. The Broncos were expected to wallop Canterbury in their brief incarnation as the ‘Sydney Bulldogs’. Glenn Lazarus was the top front rower in the game, a colossus with four premierships under his belt in the last six years. Brisbane had broken through to win two competitions on the back of bringing him up from Canberra.

Pay took it upon himself to target Lazarus and a few minutes into the game, smashed him so hard in the ribs that Lazarus took no further part in the game.

The Dogs went on to win, and then kept winning until they lifted the last ever Winfield Cup. That’s how Pay played. We like the look of the forwards he doesn’t want at the club as much as the ones he does.

You say what about the halves, how can you ignore the Kieran Foran issue?

Foran comes into 2019 with no pressure; supporters expect nothing from him after last year. He looked broken down, and too devoted to the Hasler style to spark any attacking threat.

Should he produce anything memorable in any game, it will be a bonus for us, as we have no real expectation of this. Of course, if he does, we will champion his return to form in the loudest voice.

At his peak, over at Brookvale, Foran typified the Pay style of play. Maybe he too will play in the image of the coach this year and surprise us.

Pay is a favourite son, make no mistake. What we loved about him as a player is the same character he is now trying to impose on the team. This is exciting for us Dogs men and women, intense and focused and demanding as we are.

Now to win some football games.

Disagree with your comments on Tolman and Foran. Tolman is your worker, a type of front rower you need in all teams. Some teams have them as 2nd rowers, doesn't matter where they play, you must have one. Goes all day instead of 10 minute bursts. Canterbury wasted money on Woods when they already had Tolman. You don't need 2 of the same type. Foran has it all to prove and he knows it. He gets paid a lot of money and now he has to earn it. There is pressure aplenty on whether his busted body can hold together for a full season, or whether his off-field demons will return. Magnificent and courageous when playing for Manly, he has been a shell of himself since. News out of Belmore is he is training the house down. But training is not playing week in, week out, 26 rounds. It's like looking good on the bag, the bag doesn't punch back. I hope he has a stellar season, but the jury, and the medico's, are out.

Dean Pay is such a favourite son that he threatened to sue the club if he wasn’t released to go and play for Parramatta in the ARL competition. Dean Pay is so far a myth, as is his love for club. He needs to prove this year is more than a cheerleader in the coaches box who points to a poor roster at every opportunity.

That’s certainly an optimistic appraisal. If everything goes right then maybe the Dogs will be challenging for a bottom of the 8 spot but I think they look at least a season and maybe more away. Overloaded in the back row and light on in the outside backs. Huge question marks over Foran. A talented but chronically under performing hooking in Lichaa. Lewis coming into his dreaded second season. Still can’t comprehend how the Dogs could let Zac Woolford and Josh Cleeland go from last years ISP winning team. Letting Cleeland go and signing Cogger seems daft to me. Sue is tough and strong but a bit of a journeyman. Napa is a world beater a couple of days a year only. I don’t think too much has been made about Klemmer’s departure. His metres are as good as any middle third forward in the game and last year added a much needed pass and offload to his repertoire. He’s hitting his peak as a front rower now and unfortunately it will be the Knights that reap the rewards. I agree that Pay is the right man to have in charge. As well as the game against the Broncos where he smashed Lazarus he was also outstanding against the Dragons in the first semi of the 95 series. His clashes with a young Tallis were outstanding. Tallis came on as the young lion trying to knock everyone’s block off and Pay took it on himself to put him in his place. They sought each other out a few times. Great footy.

Fair enough Mark and for you and other Doggies fans I hope Napa proves to be a good buy. I'm not sold on his tackling technique amongst other things, but a change of Club might be just whet he needs to lift his game.

For those who say dean pay is an unproven coach; remember Ricky Stuart when he left the roosters, he coached at Cronulla and parramatta with both teams playing poorly under Stuart. Ricky then leaves for Canberra and not much changes until, all of a sudden the raiders become a force, they’re the real deal for 1 or 2 seasons. Ricky Stuart and some players acknowledge the huge contribution dean pay made to their success.

Klemmer is a good player, as you say Paul, he’s a state of origin and test player. In saying that, I’m glad he’s left the dogs and we have signed Napa. I think Napa is a better fit for this team and I think he is the type of player we need.

How many games will Dylan Napa miss if any? I think he’s a great buy, I prefer him to Klemmer in terms of football style.

As a bulldogs supporter I have to admit I’m optimistic most pre-seasons. I like the bulldogs roster, I think sue, Corey h-n and Napa are really good buys for the bulldogs as they fit the style of the bulldogs I know and like best. I think a good number 9 is what the bulldogs are in need of most. I believe the amount of success the dogs can have this season will be determined by dean pay. The style that he wants them to play, capitalising on the energy of a team that is young and enthusiastic. I have faith in pay, I like him and I think he suits the bulldogs.

I think most Dogs fans are just happy to see us playing towards the end of last year an expansive brand of footy compared to the old Hasler no risk style. Cause even if you lose more than you win, if it looks like we are having a go and chancing our arm, it's much easier to be upbeat about the team. And loving the blooding of some youth at the end of season. A bit of a changing of the guard so to speak. Best thing is that at the start of round 1. We are equal 1st!

Gould didnt want CWN to leave Panrhers. I understood cap issues at panthers enabled Dogs to nab him with an increased offer.
