2019 AFL Season Preview: Fremantle Dockers

By Cameron Rose / Expert

It’s easy to forget Fremantle finished on top of the ladder in 2015, and ended up making the prelim. Three weeks can be a long time in football, but three years is an eternity.

Of those playing in that preliminary final defeat to Hawthorn, only seven players remain at the Dockers. The list turnover has been savage, and the rebuild is well and truly on. It hasn’t all been about hitting youth in the draft though. 11 players on the Freo list havie come from other clubs, plus a number of other mature age recruits.

Fremantle Best 22

B: Luke Ryan, Joel Hamling, Connor Blakely
HB: Nathan Wilson, Alex Pearce, Stephen Hill
C: Brad Hill, Nat Fyfe, Ed Langdon
HF: Travis Colyer, Jesse Hogan, Michael Walters
F: Matt Taberner, Rory Lobb, Brandon Matera
Foll: Sean Darcy, David Mundy, Reece Conca
Int: Baley Banfield, Andrew Brayshaw, Darcy Tucker, Adam Cerra
Em: Aaron Sandilands, Brennan Cox, Hayden Ballantyne

Harley Bennell would be in this best side, but after two games in the last three seasons, he can’t be considered. He is an add-on extra, and if we get to see him play again it will be a bonus.

Fremantle’s is a very difficult bottom six to work out, given they have quite a bit of inexperience on their list, inclusions from other clubs, and veterans like Aaron Sandilands and Hayden Ballantyne that should probably be back-ups rather than starters.

Goals have long been a problem at the Dockers. They’ve been in the bottom three for points scored in each of the last three seasons. Even when they finished on top of the ladder in 2015 they were 11th in points for. When they made the grand final in 2013, they were 12th.

Obviously a lot of this has been to do with Ross Lyon’s defensive game style, but also a lack of talent and consistency forward of centre. To that end, the inclusions of Jesse Hogan and Rory Lobb would be making mouths water among the fan base.

Hogan is a work horse who will push up the field, and is a good player but not a gun yet. Five Roar writers got together to do our collect top 50 players in the competition, which will be published next week – 79 players got votes, but Hogan wasn’t one of them.

Lobb will be stationed deeper and offer ruck support – contested marking is his strength, and when he starts clunking them he can be hard to stop.

If nothing else, Hogan-Lobb looks a lot better than McCarthy-Kersten.

Supporters of Matt Taberner sound like a broken record, always anticipating “this will be his year”. But we must keep the faith. If he stays fit, matures, and fulfills his talent then this is a marking trio to be reckoned with.

But, if Freo’s ball movement doesn’t speed up, then opposition defences will still be able to pick off the slow entries. Bombing the ball in high and long won’t necessarily work, and the key forwards will have to get their leading patterns right.

Brandon Matera and Travis Colyer could do some damage at the feet of the tall forwards but fitness and consistency are issues, and we know what an ever-present threat Michael Walters is wherever he plays.

Through the middle, Nat Fyfe has to shoulder an enormous load after the departure of Lachie Neale to Brisbane. Neale was number one at the club for disposals, contested possessions, clearances and tackles last year, and we know Fyfe has had his struggles staying on the park. Still, he is arguably the best player in the competition, so a lot can rightfully be expected of him.

Reece Conca has been brought across from Richmond to help with some inside work. He will frustrate with some of decision making. Will David Mundy spend less time forward with more options at Lyon’s disposal there now, and become predominantly a midfielder again? Like Shaun Burgoyne at Hawthorn, he is Freo’s Mr Fixit, capable everywhere and cool in a crisis.

Brad Hill and Ed Langdon are the preferred wingmen, and their run and carry will be more vital than ever if the Dockers are to make gains in their attacking game.

Then you’ve got the younger brigade, where natural improvement should come from – Bailey Banfield, Andrew Brayshaw, Darcy Tucker and Adam Cerra. Can one of these announce themselves as the number two man behind Fyfe in the middle?

Sean Darcy should be the preferred ruckman, even if Sandilands is fit. He’s an enormous 20-year-old, and with 15 promising games under his belt, has shown that he can become one of the best in his position.

Run from defence shouldn’t be a problem for Freo with Nathan Wilson and Stephen Hill behind the ball – will Ross Lyon let them unleash their attacking flair? Both are good kicks of the football, Wilson is exceptional, so they could be pivotal in any rise up the ladder for the Dockers.

Luke Ryan is one who could be impacted by the 6-6-6 rules, given he has often been used as a loose man in defence. How Lyon will structure up, in order to release him in general play, is one of the questions to be answered.

In the key defensive posts, Joel Hamling has been good for Fremantle since moving across from the Dogs, presumably carting his premiership medallion with him. Improvement can be expected from Alex Pearce after playing his first full season last year after missing all of 2017 and over half of 2016 with leg issues.

One of the biggest problems at the Dockers is the lack of quality that was secured at the national drafts from 2009-2012. These are the 24-28 year olds that are in the prime of their career, and Freo has only a single player on the list from the combination of these drafts that they themselves selected.

Players they’ve secured from other clubs from these drafts contain Shane Kersten, Bennell, Conca, Colyer, Hamling, Matera and Brad Hill. It’s not the most inspiring collective.

Compare it to their premiership-winning crosstown rivals. From these drafts West Coast have Jeremy McGovern, Andrew Gaff, Elliot Yeo, Jack Darling, Jamie Cripps, Lewis Jetta, Brad Sheppard and Mark Hutchings, among others. It’s a far more stable, talented and trustworthy group.

There are a lot of “ifs” around many sides at this time of year, but particularly around those that struggled last year. Fremantle has as many if not more than most. Home ground advantage is on their side, as is an opening three rounds that gives them a chance to build momentum.

The absolute optimists could have them pushing for a finals berth if all the “ifs” go their way. But they can’t be trusted, and it’s more likely they’ll get worse before they get better.

Prediction: 16th

I'm not a Taberner fan - I think he's over-hyped and over-rated, but it seems he's locked in his forward position. On the other hand, I'm a huge McCarthy fan for the reason you mention, plus he's a Freo fanatic, but if he doesn't improve his fitness he'll be hard pressed to get a call up. I do hope it's as you've said and he's finally doing the righty by having a more professional attitude and cutting out the chips and soft drink.

So what you are saying that McCarthy could not adapt to play in the midfield.????? I suggest he has the perfect measurements for that role ?

Except he plays a totally different game. Good grief. It's not about measurements.

Exactly why toying with the idea to play Darcy and Sandilands in the same team would be nonsense.

Tabs, Lobb and Hogan is too tall - look at most teams, they will have the two big forwards. I think for Freo that has to be Lobb and Hogan. What McCarthy offers in place of Taberner I think is that he is a footballer. Tabs is a runner and an athlete. At 23 this should be Cams break out season. He has the perfect team structure now, he just needs the effort.

You make some very good point's. McCarthy is 192-92 and Mundy is 192-91 so if he is fitter than last year there should be no reason why he could not go through the midfield especially with Blakely and S.Hill not available in the opening games. Interesting to see if he plays next Monday against the pies.

If the plan is to go with 3 talls and it's a given that Hogan and Lobb are the first two, then the problem McCarthy faces is that Taberner currently has the third spot locked up. Judging from the highlights (and scoresheet) from the intraclub match, Hogan and Taberner were playing really well together, very much in sync. Taberner is also capable of pinch hitting in the ruck. Is it possible to play all 4 of them in the same side? All of McCarthy, Taberner and Hogan can push up the ground, and we may even see Hogan rotated through the middle.

I just think he'll be better as the second/third target, alongside Lobb and Hogan. He kicked 12 goals in games Taberner played (9 games) and 7 in games he didn't play (8 games). His other tall forward support options was Cox ... I think he'll do his best work when he's second fiddle to a quality forward like Hogan. Having Lobb there will be a bonus. McCarthy is a natural footballer, unlike Tabs who is an athlete who plays footy. He has excellent skills and looks to have shed 5kg over summer, so it looks like he has taken the criticism of his fitness to heart and put in some work

Hard to see McCarthy getting in for round 0ne. Problem being height 192 he is not tall and not short Walters is short 178. Taberner is 198. Dixon 196 kicked 3 goals in the inter club match and was impressive. McCarthy has huge talent and always attracted the best back man in the past. With Lobb and Hogan that will make it a lot easier for him. With Hill and Blakely out don't be surprised if North gets in round one, was super impressive in the practice game as well. As was Schultz 178.

Your prediction falls in line with my own expectations. Huge call with McCarthy though. Gut feeling or seeing good things from him during training?

Thanks for the article Cam, although I disagree with your prediction for Freo. I think Freo bottomed out over the past 2 seasons as they transitioned out their 2013-2015 team in search of a core group of players to take forward into the coming 5 seasons. I think they have that core now in Fyfe, Blakely, B Hill, Hamling, A Pearce, Hogan, Lobb, Darcy, Cerra, Brayshaw, Wilson, Ryan, Logue, McCarthy (I am tipping him for a big season), Cox, Langdon and Banfield Players I haven't mentioned have yet to show what their potential may be, that includes Taberner. but the above group will be there across the next 5 seasons. This is another season of getting 20 games of competition as a team into the above players. As a unit I expect the to halve at least their home games, and away they should pick up 3-4 wins at least. Thats a 10 win prediction, which will see them sitting about 10-12

Ha, you're bang on. I've been reading Roar articles/comments for about 4 years now... It was amusing at first...damn boring now. I'm only commenting so others, like me, don't have to look at the same half dozen names. If you read the comments but don't have an account...sign up.

My goodness! Croad became a centre half back! They don't score many goals. He became so good at it he continued as a centre half back at Hawthorn. You even use the 'fake news' idea incorrectly. No news involved...just information. You don't even know what you are disagreeing with. You just do it to be noticed.

Downsey you are going to love Lachie Schultz small fast forward who loves a goal was outstanding in the club practice match.

More fake news Don....Croad 1998 -4 goals-1999-16 goals-2000-33 goals-2001-27 goals-for Hawthorn. Joined Freo in 2002 for 42 goals- 2003- 18 goal. He returned to the Hawks in 2004 and played the big majority of time in the back line and was named full back in the All Australian team . Played in a premiership team 2008 at full back and was injured in that game, it was his last game. For you to say Freo found ''his true position'' is yet another one of your very ''Wrong'' statements.

I haven't had a chance to go through the threads yet...so, apologies if it's already been raised... Will we ever see Harley Bennell play another AFL game? Not raising this to have a go at the bloke - I couldn't give a toss what he does off the field - big fan of the way he plays...just looks like injuries and time may get the better of him, thoughts?

You don't even know who plays for Freo. Zac Dawson? Really? That was 3 seasons ago. The only thing you have got right is the spelling of "Ross Lyon" and what happened in 2001 in one game...after it happened. You have never made a comment about Freo in the now...ever. You wait until 2 years after it has happened, then claim to have said it and, even then, you misinterpret what actually happened. The only effect of your posts is to mock yourself.
