Just one question will decide Folau's future

By David Lord / Expert

Israel Folau’s decision to fight Rugby Australia tearing up his contract after another homophobic rant on social media has set up a code of conduct hearing sometime in the next fortnight after the Easter and Anzac Day break.

A three-strong code of conduct panel has yet to be selected, with a Rugby Australia representative, a Players Association representative and an independent chairman.

Folau’s answer to just one question from the chairman would decide his rugby future.

“Why did you break a promise to Raelene Castle, Rugby Australia’s CEO, that you would never again make any homophobic rants on social media?”.

The answer will be of particular significance as lying is one of eight Folau accusations that have him in trouble, along with “drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, fornicators, thieves, atheists and idolators” all going to hell.

If the answer doesn’t cut the mustard with the code of conduct panel, Folau rides into the rugby sunset forever, minus the balance of his four-year, $4 million contract while severely denting the Wallabies World Cup and Waratah Super Rugby campaigns.

But if the panel supports Folau’s answer, it opens up a massive mountain of problems.

Will Qantas, a Wallabies major sponsor at $4 million a year and strong supporter of gay marriage and LGBTI rights, pull the pin on a cash-strapped Rugby Australia?

Or will the negative reaction to Folau among the Wallabies players render him unselectable, making him the highest paid spectator in rugby’s history as he watches his former teammates compete on television from the comfort of his lounge room?

There are a few standing in Folau’s corner, such as Wallabies halfback legend Nick Farr-Jones; current Wallabies Samu Kerevi, Allan Alaalatoa and Curtis Rona; and former Wallabies coach and broadcasting legend Alan Jones.

But the list of those condemning Folau grows by the day.

Sports opinion delivered daily

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika reckons he can never pick Folau again because the Wallabies play for and represent all Australians.

Current Wallabies captain Michael Hooper would rather never play than ever play with Folau again.

Future Wallabies captain David Pocock is in a different boat altogether. He and long-term partner Emma Palandri had a commitment ceremony in 2010 but refused to be married until same-sex marriage was legalised in Australia. That happened in 2017, and Pocock and Palandri were officially married last year.

So already a positive code of conduct result has made Folau’s future involvement virtually untenable.

I have a question for Folau: what did he expect to achieve by ranting against popular public opinion? For example, I’m a practising atheist after God took my father Broughton at 47 years of age in 1960 and my son Andrew at 47 just over seven years ago, the two I loved most on the planet.

My retaliation has been a kept promise to never enter church doors again for the rest of my life until I have no option in a box.

Even though I’m included on Folau’s hit list to repent or go to hell, I feel cheated I’m not likely to see this superb talent ever play again. And seeing his God-given talent has made him such a superstar, surely God must feel cheated as well that a stellar career He provided will be cut short. And for what?

From this day on there will never be a winner in this absurd situation. Everyone will be hurt in some way. And just one man kick-started this worldwide hurtful chain of events.

Israel Folau.

Gloria. Piru's question appears genuine to me and I would be interested in your opinion. For me, Izzy could only really be back three. Replacing who tho? Ben Smith? Nope, for my money the best full-back on the planet and a pretty decent option on the right wing. Folau may be better aerially but is hosed in every other facet of play. Reiko Ioane? Nope. Probably the best winger in the game right now and an integral cog in the All Blacks machine. There's a host of pretty decent players vying for that other spot, likely to be right wing. Who does Izzy beat to that spot? Naholo? Maybe. The other Barrett? Nope, Jordie has a superior skill-set and can come in earlier as a receiver. Is Izzy good enough to be a utility replacement from the pine? Maybe, but he wouldn't be my 1st pick. The only guy who could, or maybe could have been considered an All Black in recent history is Pocock, but he has to displace Savea, who I think has been brilliant in the last 12 months. Bench spot at best. And Ruckin Oaf is right about the synergy thing. It's the sum of the parts argument which also brings coaching systems into the argument.

You'd be hard pressed to say he would not be selected had it not been for his comments? Here is a bloke that has been front and centre of the marketing of RA for years, just cracked highest Super Rugby try scorer ever, and is consistently dangerous in attack for the lacklustre Wallabies... if he was free to play, but not selected, RA would be open to this avenue for sure.

@Jamie You are absolutely correct, but mate, where is the patriotism...Australia is by far NOT the rugby playing powerhouse that NZ, RSA or even England is, but boy, we try. In aforementioned countries rugby is gospel, not so much in Oz, yet still always there or there about...but I agree, Folau not the magic factor, look at grassroots for the answer, bring the game into schools, not just in NSW but country wide and things will improve I think...

You see thats where you dont get to dictate what it was. You call it a biblical quote others call it a rant. Based on the words alone, its a rant, regardless of its origin. And its associated to izzy, as he posted those words, making it ‘izzys rant’.

Cool yeah so then we can all put up with these rants five times a day leading into a test match. Wont that be fun. Perhaps they can allocate an extra five minutes at half time for izzy only test matches so he can get his rant out?

One of the more interesting takes on this. I do wonder what it opens the door up to though. The shooter in chch is an extreme example of ‘airing ones views’ so corporate or personal, I think theres more to this than corporates just adopting a ‘mature’ approach.

May e hes doing it to get out of his contract so he can go north for double the 4 mill? Would be that be ironic :-). ‘Hey izzy, gotta contract for ya, but ya need to get up here quickly’ ‘Okay, I’ll sort it’. :-)

Because their thought and belief hold this country back from evolving. A group of people that pick and choose parts of a book and reject other parts simply to advance an outdated argument are detrimental to the ongoing progress of this country. I share citizenship with these hypocritical Neanderthals.

I do wonder if his agent had some feelers out to the Storm or Cowboys or another NRL team. Homophobic remarks released by or walk away from RA and ink the new NRL deal. Then after the NRL said "nup" all of a sudden fighting to retain his spot in rugby becomes an issue. Baseless speculation on my part and unless anybody releases a memoir down the track we'll never know.

Folau damaged the game with his initial posting. He's now flipped the bird at RA and the rugby community in general with his second. RA should aggressively sue Folau for breach of contract and seek substantial damages. Might be hard to establish the exact amount of damage, but right now this whole mess is upside down. Folau thinks there's no downside to his hate speech. If he was a private citizen exercising the free speech rights he clearly has, perhaps the downside would be limited to a collapse in popularity amongst those who do not share his perversions. As an employee he's destabilised sponsorships and undermined RA's fan base at the very least. Maybe he'd be a little less cavalier about his public pronouncements if RA came at him for say $10 million in damages. Challenging his sacking is brazen given priors. Winning would open a giant loophole across professional sports in Australia - a simple template for exiting a contract should the grass appear greener elsewhere.

RA will always bow done at the feet of Joyce and his money, Folauis done before it even starts, judged in the court of public opinion and that of Qantas.
