Would Nat Fyfe and Lachie Neale like to swap spots now?

By Jordan Klingsporn / Roar Guru

If I were to ask you to describe Lachie Neale, you would probably tell me something like “He’s a ball magnet, who was very underrated at Fremantle because he was in Nat Fyfe’s shadow”.

Then if I were to ask you to describe Nat Fyfe, you would probably say “A good footballer who would be one of the all-time greats if he could stop injuring himself”. If you were to ask me those things, I probably would say something similar.

If you look at Neale, he is arguably the biggest ball magnet in the competition. He currently has 179 disposals over just five games. But out of those 179 touches, 115 of them were handballs. The bad thing about this is that when you win the kick count, you win approximately 78 per cent of games, but you only win approximately 59 per cent of games if you win the handball count.

It isn’t the first season Neale has had the ball a lot, as he was fifth in disposals last season, and had the most touches in the home-and-away season despite Fremantle only winning four games. But, like the first five games this season, most of the touches were handballs.

Perhaps inspiration should be drawn towards the other ball magnets in the league. Maybe Lachie Whitfield from GWS, who has 88 kicks and 48 handballs. Or possibly Jake Lloyd from Sydney, who has 89 kicks and 46 handballs.

This is something Fremantle is struggling with. Only Ed Langdon and Bradley Hill have 100 disposals or more over the first four games, while players like defender Joel Hamling have only had 34 disposals so far, less than Neale’s disposal average. The team is pretty consistent across the board in disposals, but doesn’t have a standout player there.

Neale should have been that player, but he moved from the Dockers to the Lions in the last trade period. Rumours were that he left because he fell out with coach Ross Lyon, or that he didn’t like the players, although he quashed those rumours.

But what did you expect him to say? “Yeah I moved clubs because I didn’t like my teammates and I didn’t like Ross Lyon”?

If he was to come back to Fremantle, he would be the best player there. Look at the last few Brownlow Medalists. Tom Mitchell in 2018, was a ball magnet with an average of just over 35 touches per game. Patrick Dangerfield in 2016, another ball magnet with an average of just under 32 touches per game. Neale could have possibly won a Brownlow if he wasn’t in Fyfe’s shadow.

So, the Dockers would have to send Nat Fyfe on his way to somewhere. Why not send him in a swap deal to Brisbane?

Fyfe is 14 centimetres and ten kilos bigger than Neale, and he’s also 16 centimetres and 18 kilos bigger than Dayne Zorko. This would give Brisbane an advantage in that, instead of having two small midfielders who can’t do much more than get touches on the ball if they come up against a larger opponent, Fyfe could be useful here.

Sports opinion delivered daily

Fyfe and Zorko would mix perfectly.

Brisbane can also benefit more on the statistical side of things. On average Fyfe is, along with a few other things, ahead of Neale in contested marks – for which Brisbane are behind Fremantle. Plus, who wouldn’t want a Brownlow Medalist to join their side?

Having Fyfe in your side is always going to be a risk considering the injuries he keeps on getting, like the concussion he got against St Kilda in Round 3. But, if he can stay fit, Brisbane or any team can easily win with him.

I know that it is a bit of a fantasy and unlikely to happen at any point in either player’s career. But as a Dockers fan that likes to dream big, I would love to see Nat Fyfe and Lachie Neale swap places right now. I wonder if they would?

Satire always makes for an interesting read Jordon. If your frustration of Fyfe's injury history frustrates you so much, barrack for Brisbane. The injury history is a symptom of the way he plays and why he impacts the game in a way Neale doesn't purely because of physical presence. Neale for Hogan and Lobb I will take every time.

Mundy certainly looks like he has at least two years left, had very few injuries over the years. S.Hill is a worry 29 next week and is copping a lot of leg injuries the last couple of seasons.

I think Coniglio will have a strong family pull to come home. West Coast can only afford Kelly, so Freo should back the truck up for Coniglio with Sandi, Ballas and Bennells cash. Can the Hawks buy Mitchell, O'Meara and Coniglio? Who funnily enough would all play for WA in state of origin

Coniglio would be great but i don't think he would come to Freo, even if he leaves GWS i think he will head to Victoria. Great mates with O'Meara. Tim Kelly is the one they could get. Ballantyne, Sandilands and Bennell are all shot, cannot get out of the rehab. room. Get rid of them free's up the salary cap. They are wasted money and spot's on the list.

Nope, nuh, no way First position is to keep Fyfe .... this is the same as the next 10 most preferred movements. The next preferable movement is to bring in Coniglio on the free agency transfer next trade period. And that is Freo's premiership midfield group done - Lobb/Darcy, Fyfe, Coniglio, Walters, B Hill, Blakely, Cerra, Brayshaw, Langdon, S Hill, Tucker and Conca. Mundy could even play for another 2-3 seasons if he wants The backline is set with Pearce, Hamling, Wilson, Ryan, Logue, Duman, Hughes The forwards are ready in place with Hogan, Cox, Tabs, Matera, Switta, McCarthy, Colyer And there's some talent still coming in - Valente, Sturt, Carter, Dixon and North

Much more likely that Patrick will be wearing the blue and gold. I'd have Fyfe in a heartbeat. but the Eagles don't have any really really good players to swap for him. Just a lot of tradies really...

Neale is not in the same league as Fyfe. Fyfe is the best player in the comp, Neale is a very good footballer but no where near the same league.

Well done to Lachie Neale for making the transition from the list of most underrated AFL players to the list of most overrated ones.

Good article...but, Fyfe IS Fremantle. A supreme leader on and off the field. Agreed, Lachie is a ball magnet but too much of a field mouse. Lachie brings great things to the Lions. Fyfe makes opposition genuinely sweat at breakdowns and is always an overhead threat thru the midfield and forwards. Plus...all that Fyfe/sponsored moolah for Freo. The big picture ain't just onfield stats.

Broken legs and concussions are collision injuries. His capacity to recover is phenomenal.

Neale and Zorko for Fyfe? C'mon that's a bit hard to turn down.

What an absolute dream it would be to have Cripps running around in a Freo jumper alongside Fyfe, too.

Jordan, I do not want to ignite the real reason why a contracted player walks out, but he was obviously not happy being at Freo. Like you said he was never going to bag the coach or players to the media. Perhaps he will write a book one day.

Two first round picks for Neale was a steal for Freo.
