Lloyd wishes Blues had Mumford's aggro

By News / Wire

Carlton football boss Brad Lloyd wishes they had more of the AFL aggro that landed Blues veteran Marc Murphy in hospital with fractured ribs.

Lloyd said he had no issue with the big hit from GWS ruckman Shane Mumford that took out Murphy in Sunday’s disastrous loss.

Murphy, who will miss several weeks because of the rib damage, was discharged from hospital on Sunday night and flew back to Melbourne on Monday.

AFL match reviewer Michael Christian has cleared Mumford for the incident, while Lloyd wants Carlton’s under-performing players to take note of the Giants ruckman’s attitude.

“Look, in some ways, that’s the way you like footy to be played,” Lloyd told SEN.

“You don’t like seeing players hurt but I would have liked to have seen more physicality from us yesterday.

“I hope Murph’s okay but Mumford plays a pretty strong brand of footy that everyone’s admired for a long period.”

GWS mauled Carlton by 93 points to renew pressure on the Blues and their coach Brendon Bolton.

But the badly-struggling Blues appear set to stay the course with the under-pressure coach for now.

Club president Mark Loguidice on Monday night labelled it an “unacceptable” performance but declared Bolton retained the board’s support – a position he has been forced to confirm on multiple occasions over the past 12 months.

Lloyd wanted Carlton to be tougher in the contest.

“We’re not close enough, we need to work on a lot of things,” he said.

“We need to be more brutal in the contest, we got smashed yesterday. We need to work really hard on our skill level, it’s an area where we need to smash into it as a playing group.”

Lloyd added that Bolton is far from the only person at Carlton under the pump.

The Blues are a game clear in bottom with only one win, and Sunday’s debacle comes a fortnight after they also suffered a poor loss to North Melbourne.

Former North Melbourne great Wayne Carey was among the AFL pundits questioning the Blues’ continued lack of improvement under Bolton.

“There’s some real red flags for me,” Carey said on the Seven Network.

“After that (loss) two weeks ago, I didn’t think we’d see that again for the rest of the year and we’ve seen it straight away.”

It is a bit odd that a week and a half after the game, when nothing was picked up on the telecast (and people I know at the game have said they couldn't even hear it) that you even bother raising the issue of a teams supporters getting frustrated that their team got 1/3 the free kicks their opposition did and received just 1 free kick in each of the last 2 quarters.

It has to be remembered with Kerr and Lang's games last week they were against Frankston, a team yet to win a game this year with a percentage of 46.52%, finished last year with just 2 wins and a percentage of 46.62% and have no AFL affiliation.

I’d like to see Kerr but let’s see him a string a few together and bang the door down. Not sure he can be called a good kick for goal Col, inaccuracy has been his main problem I like JSOS on the ball. I still see him as a Josh Kennedy type. Main thing is to get some aggression into the midfield. If Cripps is held they turn to water.

Not all doom and gloom sure it was a particularly bad game against GWS but no one wants to recognise 5 players with under 10 games experience. Walsh, Stocker, Gibbons, Setterfield and McCreadie who played his first match since 2017. Losing Murphy early and 3 key backmen out does not help. They are not excuses but the reality for a team trying to fight its way back and this week could be completely different. Most importantly 7 out 9 games absolutely competitive which is still important to recognise. Pluses from Sunday Harry McKay and both Walsh and Stocker still managed 18 disposals each and Nic Newman was our best. The roller coaster will continue and i expect the players will not only respond this week but will have learned a lot about themselves and what they need to do.

This is where society is today, no name calling. Heavy fine yes, but suspension is absolutely insane.

No problem going in front of the tribunal as long as the result is what happened tonight, heavy fine is the correct response, a suspension would have been ridiculous

I am now hearing the AFL have sent Carlton a please explain about the cheer squad chanting “you are a w@nker” to an umpire during the Carlton v Collingwood game. Wasn’t it a few weeks ago the umpires weren’t happy with how the AFL responded to the media regarding free kicks? Seems like the AFL are trying to appease them.

I am very confident that if the c word wasn't used this would have been a fine. I can't recall a single umpire abuse case resulting in suspension in the AFL. Hawkins didn't even get a 50m for saying "you are f ing kidding me" and Rampe get a fine for "you speak like a little girl".

No, calling an umpire that would likely result in a suspension too.

So call him a f-wit and not even a raised eyebrow but a cheat and you miss games?

As someone who used to umpire, the word 'cheat' is especially frowned upon in terms of umpire abuse as it questions their integrity. Clubs and players are well aware that term in particular will attract a sanction.

Anyone in the league calls an official a cheat Macca they will find themselves in front of the AFL Tribunal. It doesn't matter what Club Guernsey they are wearing.

"I still think your initial comment referred to Carlton being unfairly treated by the AFL." Being given the harshest penalties in the history of the game, worse than a team who systematically doped their players, and being forced to abandon playing games at your home ground seems pretty fair to you?

Elbow someone in the head - not even a fine. Lose your cool and call someone a name - suspension. No thanks.

Fro what I can gather the boundary umpire was issuing instructions to the GWS player about where to stand, Thomas eother didn't realise this was part of the 6-6-6 format or that the boundary umpire had authority to involve himself in this issue and called him an f cheat. I could see most central umpires simply batting this back and ingoring it, I could also see a fine being issued in the $10k magnitude (like Rampe) but this one gets sent straight to the tribunal - go figure.

If the reporting of the Quote is correct I'm not surprised it's been sent directly to the Tribunal at all. I actually think the AFL hard line on behaviour towards umpires is the correct way to go about it. Look at soccer and the way players treat officials in that sport. It's an absolute horrendous look. But you point about waiting to hear exact context and what was said does make 100% sense. I still think your initial comment referred to Carlton being unfairly treated by the AFL. And I think that is so far from the truth it's not funny.

I will wait until I hear what was actually said and why before passing judgement. Thomas has said going into the tribunal tonight he will be able to give context to what was actually said out on the ground. Interestingly watching Brendan Goddard last night on TV he couldn’t stop laughing about how ridiculous it was that a player gets sent to the tribunal for that. About as ridiculous as Rampe being fined $10k for saying to an umpire “you talk like a girl”.

I thought when we played the 4 talls forward it was a big mistake. My theory with Kennedy is that if he isn't next man in why didn't you play him last week.

"with the way the AFL treat us there is a chance they will make an example of Thomas" Get off the Grass Col! If anyone calls an umpire a Beeping Cheat they should be suspended whether you Player A who's played 1 game or Player B who's played 300 Games or Play C young gun who's played 50 games. If anyone of the Brisbane Lions call any umpires a Cheat they need to be suspended....

Macca, we have been playing Harry, Charlie, McGovern and Levi through the forward line prior to Levi going back. Playing Charlie on a wing, I can’t see a problem with playing Harry at CHF and Kerr FF. McGovern has been playing a floating role and not a key forward role. Kerr is a good leading forward and a very good kick for goal who doesn’t float up the ground like Charlie and Harry do so will always be a forward target. After kicking 6 goals he deserves a chance. I wouldn’t classify Jack as a leading forward but a forward who can lead as well as pressure defenders. I don’t see how they can bring Kennedy in as he hasn’t played much this year and nothing the last 2 weeks. I an baffled why he wasn’t playing VFL last week. I think Lang with 28 disposals and a goal is more mobile than Kennedy and can play wing, midfield or forward. I would persevere with Stocker. He wasn’t our worse on Sunday and with more experience coming back into defense it takes a bit of pressure off him. Setterfield is probably borderline at the moment and I would certainly like to see him give a bit more the next couple of games.
