The burning question: Is Cooper Cronk an Immortal?

By The Roar / Editor

One of the greatest careers in modern rugby league will come to a close at the end of the season, with Cooper Cronk yesterday announcing his retirement at the end of the season.

After 14 years at the Melbourne Storm, two years at the Roosters and a glittering representative career for Queensland and Australia, the 35-year-old will hang up the boots once 2019 is done and dusted.

The halfback labelled himself the “best third wheel” in the game, giving full credit to his longtime Melbourne Storm teammates Billy Slater and Cameron Smith.

But is that the full story when it comes to the two-time premiership winner?

We brought Roar NRL Expert Tim Gore onto the Game of Codes podcast to discuss the legacy of the Storm and Roosters legend, including the million-dollar question: should he be named an immortal?

Listen to the debate:

Cronk – a native of Brisbane – played 323 games for Melbourne in a 14-season career that saw him lift the Provan-Summons trophy on three occasions – only for two of those premierships to be crossed out following the Storm’s salary cap breaches.

He made headlines at the end of 2017 after announcing a shock move to the Sydney Roosters, delivering the club a premiership with a legendary performance in the grand final last year.

No mate, just a good BS filter and you're not being very honest are you? You went a little too far in back-tracking. I respect it's personal and that's fine, I won't make light of a touchy subject. I despise Gallen, can't agree with a word that comes out of his pep-filled mouth. But to say he hasn't been one of the best forwards in the NRL is clouding two separate issues.

Are you serious? Your talking out your brown dot. Wally Lewis, Sterling, Langer, Stuart, Cronk and Johns all lost games, generally behind a dominated forward pack. No, you don't get to dismiss his personal record and blame him for defeats. You're just being argumentative for the sake of it because your premise is dumb.

I have to agree Scott. The award will mean very little in the space of a generation. The immortal award should only be for those very rare players that perhaps come around once in a generation or lifetime. A player unmatched by the ordinary, good or great athletes. A player who changed the game or their positional role within the game with skills not often witnessed and never forgotten. Often the argument points to the amount of awards received, but this is not always a clear indication of an athlete. Smith will go down as the games highest ever points scorer but he took nearly 400 games to achieve it. One could also argue the Dally M awards ares somewhat of a joke.

Ben Barba never played for the Cowboys. But he was a Bronco for a while before that. I’m wondering how the toilet trio who later became Broncos Captains rate in comparison to Bolton? Rob Lui was a Tigers kid when they filled him full of grog and God knows what else? and then dropped him at the front door of his pregnant wife. He was suspended and the Cowboys tried to pick up the pieces. Lui was released because he couldn’t play with your mate Thurston. How’s Lodge going paying his victims? Are you serious O’Donnell lives in NSW and left Townsville 9 years ago and finished his career with the Rooster and in English comp years ago. You’re grabbing at straws. Seymour and O’Neil were playing for the Broncos straight out of school and struggled with alcohol after joining the Broncos. You should own what your club mentors did to there talent. Is Lockyer still partying with Wendell and Hunt. Shhhhhhhh.

Milford is overrated according to you but what you just stated in that first paragraph is exactly my point to you about JT. He played 10 years for a single club, you say he was a dominating half right? Well how come he couldn't dominate enough games in a long 10 year gap to play another grand final when other halves that aren't supposed to be dominating were playing Grand Finals more over him? Count all the half backs that played and actually were their respective teams key player for those years and tell me why JT never got the best of them when it mattered during his so called "dominating" years??? He never dominated any team. He dominated the Dally Ms points against his club mates but never dominated any other team until the right players came in 10 years later and complimented him well to make the GF and that's how I see it.

Then they will have to play "old school". Lewis could defend like a forward and was as tough as most in his era. His massive hit and square up on the Kiwis Darrell Williams in the 1989 test was a classic example of that. Cameron Murray, Victor Radley and Elijah Taylor (2018) are examples of smaller, more mobile forwards with good hands playing more of an "old school" role than as a third prop/front row forward in the middle of the field. It doesn't have to be set in stone. In order to accomodate all 4 players in the same run on side I still argue to have Lewis play as an "old school" loose forward on both attacking edges instead of being tied down to attacking and defending in the middle third of the field. 1. Slater 6. Lockyer 7. Langer 13. Lewis

Yep cronk does have more tries, partly becuase he played more games that's before getting into the per possession stats (becuase the NRl doesn't have quality data like that) I don't think there's any point in checking the stats because the NRL's stats are largely meh.

Thurston won in his debut game for QLD 2005. Good start I believe? Scott Prince played his first game for Australia 2nd Nov 2005 as halfback after beating the Cowboys in the finals. Tigers have shocking start to 2006 and Cowboys take out personal revenge for 2005 GF loss frogging Tigers twice before Origin selection. Tiger were still drunk from 2005. That makes me cry by the way. JT retains his Origin jersey. Thurston debut for Australia 5th May 2006. Cooper Cronk Dally M halfback 2006 after Cowboys fall to pieces after Origin victory. Nat, thanks for questioning my facts about JT and Prince international debut. Nat, Is this a personal discrediting thing you’re doing? If so it helps if you don’t make it up as you go.

Nat you must be related to JT? I’ve actually never spoken to Thurston until after he retired. I probably would have hugged him if I could have got back to Townsville quick enough in 2015 for the party but I was driving back from Sydney. The only autograph i’ve ever got was from King Wally on the back of a shirt at the Townsville Sports reserve when the Broncos played NQ in an invitational game. Miles was captain and Wally was just walking around. I probably had to many drinks. Just wondering do you have a blow up Thurston doll by an chance? And do you have the JT laughing app thingy? Sounds like you would.

Well said. The only hole is one or two more from pre-war given that was nearly 40 years - Harold Horder, Duncan Thompson, Wally Prigg, Vic Hey, George Treweek could all be considered, probably in that order.

All that time wasted has got to count for something! Not sure when M is coming out. It’s been submitted for a week. But it is a cracking team!!

Dominant halves in their era, either top or top two- so yes actually. My personal opinion is that Alf is as good as JT but I’m biased

PS. I don’t think JT could be a coach either. Cronk, Slater or Smithy would probably be great coaches. They just think smarter about the game.

Said hello to JT at the golf club a few weeks back. Step out of his way as he rode the bike along the strand walk way at Christmas time. Nat I consider Langer as good or better than Johns. I consider Lockyer better than Johns. I consider Lazarus better than Beatson. Inglis better than Mal. Slater on par with Lockyer. Cronk better than Thurston. I think Tom Gorman is worthy because I think he dominated and played for Toowoomba. Wow. You might rate a 7 by line engagements and highlights or goal kicking? I rate a 7 by quality passing, alround kicking backing up and there ability to get the ball to those out side them when they need it especially with time and space. The good ones don’t need protection in the defensive line and are equally as good on both sides of the field. JT is great in some areas but not so good in some. Some people believe Thompson, Johnson and Lee are great fast bowlers but I rate Mcgarth. They are way faster and destroy tail ender and when conditions suit. McGrath just tortured the best batsmen with relentless efficiency and unwavering discipline in all conditions and far more consistently. Gee I must hate Tommo and Lee? Played young Mitchell and I salute him for sticking it out and becoming a great player. He could bowl rubbish at times. Maybe Cronk appeals to me like McGrath does in cricket. I know who plays smarter wins more times.
