Why the Giants might be forced to part with Coniglio

By The Roar / Editor

There’s no doubt the biggest fish in this year’s player movement pool is GWS restricted free agent Stephen Coniglio. The 25-year-old is in close to career-best form, with plenty of clubs lining up to secure the superstar’s signature.

Carlton have been crying out for inside midfield support to complement Patrick Cripps, St Kilda and Hawthorn have also been reportedly courting the midfielder with huge monetary offers, while Fremantle appear to be in the box seat if the WA-native opts for a return home.

More recent reports suggest, however, that the chances of him staying at the Giants are growing – but can they afford it?

We discussed Coniglio and GWS’ plight on the Game of Codes podcast with Roar AFL expert Marnie Cohen. It turns out there could be a horror scenario for GWS looming in the very near future that may simply force them to ship the superstar away.

Listen to the discussion:

Coniglio wasn’t the only potential mover discussed on the podcast, with Tim Kelly, Jack Martin and Jamie Elliott also getting put in the spotlight.

By that stage, Taranto will be the primary target.

Here's 'good authority'. He will sign with GWS (in a couple of day's time) for 2 more years on healthy $ but not what he could get elsewhere. That allows him, in 2 years time, to go big elsewhere or nail down a one club career deal.

Too funny! At least you admit your comment is rubbish. I am glad neither if you claimed "I heard it on good authority" or "you heard it here first"...HeraldSun favourites.

Supposedly he is Geelong’s target if Kelly doesn’t re-sign.

Your comment is just as much rubbish as mine.. You have absolutely no basis of information just a salty old man getting saltier the more you think about that sweet, sweet day in September 2018..

Rubbish. He has basically already re-signed with GWS, expect an announcement next 2 weeks. Kelly is tempted to stay with the Cats in the premiership window but if not will play for Fremantle.

It depends on whether he plays for money. I think he'll sign a two-year extension, then move to Fremantle to play with Lobb & Wilson.

He will end up at WCE with Kelly going to Fremantle.
